Prenatal ethanol exposure leads to persistent anxiety-like behavior during adulthood indicated by reduced horizontal and vertical exploratory behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) caused by prenatal ethanol exposure (PE) consist of many cognitive/behavioral deficits. Studies have reported that PE leads to impairments of learning and memory, attention, executive function, and anxiety. Open field (OF) is a common behavioral model which offers comprehensive ethological information. Here, we analyzed multiple parameters of OF to examine anxiety behavior and habituation after PE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were gavaged twice/day with 0 or 3 g/kg/treatment ethanol (15% w/v) during gestational day (GD

Solving the exploration-exploitation dilemma in a dynamic pain-related context: The benefits of exploratory behaviors.

Daily decision-making involves navigating the explore-exploit dilemma (EED), balancing novel information gathering against maintaining current strategies. Individuals with chronic pain often exhibit exploitation responses, choosing pain avoidance over exploring potentially beneficial activities. This study investigated decision-making during the EED in individuals with chronic pain and pain-free individuals, examining whether self-initiated exploration predicts improved outcomes when environmental contingencies change. Participants completed a multi-armed bandit task where contingency changes

Social cognition across bipolar disorder and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia: an exploratory study.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder type 1 (BD1) and behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) share similar behavioral and cognitive symptoms, rendering the differential diagnosis between them a clinical challenge. We investigated the accuracy of social cognition (SC) measures to differentiate bvFTD from BD. METHODS: We included three groups of participants: early-onset BD1 (in remission, n=20), bvFTD (n=18), and cognitively healthy controls (HC) (n=40), matched for age, schooling, and sex. All participants underwent cognitive assessment, including the Facial Emotion Recognition (FER) and

Adolescent blue light exposure reduces exploratory behavior and recognition memory in male and female Long Evans rats.

Nighttime exposure to blue light has been shown to disrupt circadian rhythms, brain function, and cognitive behavior. Previous studies in adult rats show that blue light can alter both cognitive and reproductive function. Given the near ubiquitous use of blue light-emitting electronic devices, an emerging concern is the effects of blue light on the developing adolescent brain. In the present study, adolescent (postnatal day P25-55) male and female Long Evans rats were exposed to blue light for 6 h per night followed by 6 h of darkness. Controls were kept on a standard 12:12 h schedule. In earl

Risk perception and information-seeking behavior during emergency: An exploratory study on COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh.

With the fluctuating condition of the pandemic, people's perception of COVID-19 is also inconstant. If people perceive a low risk of any health emergency or any other crisis, they won't look for proper information to change their attitude, which might increase their risk. Through the use of two different theories and a mixed-method approach, this study attempted to understand the current perception about COVID-19 and the relationship between risk perception and information-seeking behavior. Survey and in-depth key informant interviews were used as tools for data collection. The results indicat

Dietary polydextrose and galactooligosaccharide increase exploratory behavior, improve recognition memory, and alter neurochemistry in the young pig.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have shown that dietary prebiotics have the potential to improve memory, alter social behavior, and reduce anxiety-like behaviors in rodents. The present research sought to expand upon such results and describe the effects of feeding prebiotics early in life on cognition and neurochemistry using a translational piglet model. METHODS: Pigs were provided customized milk replacer containing 2 g/L each of polydextrose (PDX) and galactooligosaccharide (PDX/GOS) or 0 g/L (Control) from postnatal day (PND) 2-33. Beginning on PND 25, pigs were tested on the novel object r

Prenatal immune activation in mice blocks the effects of environmental enrichment on exploratory behavior and microglia density.

Adverse environmental factors including prenatal maternal infection are capable of inducing long-lasting behavioral and neural alterations which can enhance the risk to develop schizophrenia. It is so far not clear whether supportive postnatal environments are able to modify such prenatally-induced alterations. In rodent models, environmental enrichment influences behavior and cognition, for instance by affecting endocrinologic, immunologic, and neuroplastic parameters. The current study was designed to elucidate the influence of postnatal environmental enrichment on schizophrenia-like behavio

Human brain fingerprint-like nodes within RSFC: an exploratory study and their role in RSFC-behavior associations.

Resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) contains participant-specific patterns that can support differentiation among individuals within a cohort. This paper proposed computational approaches for determining the differential identifiability of nodes within the RSFC from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) and Leipzig Mind-Brain-Body (LEMON) datasets, and defined fingerprint-like nodes to explore individual brain functional fingerprint recognition and cognitive prediction. In addition, the predictions of fluid intelligence and working memory were explored. Experiments revealed that fingerpr

Combined Exercise and Ursolic Acid Improve Hippocampal Neuronal Markers and Exploratory-Locomotor Behavior in Aged Diabetic Rats.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is linked to progressive cognitive decline and motor impairments, especially among the aging population, highlighting the importance of early detection through reliable neuronal biomarkers. Proteins such as neurofilament light chain (NFL), neurogranin (Ng), and visinin-like protein 1 (VILIP-1) have emerged as indicators of neurodegeneration and associated behavioral changes. This study examined the effects of combined endurance and resistance exercise, along with ursolic acid (UA) supplementation, on hippocampal neuronal biomarkers and exploratory-locomotor behavi

Effect of Functionally Significant Deiodinase Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms on Drinking Behavior in Alcohol Dependence: An Exploratory Investigation.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis have been reported in alcoholism; however, there is no definitive agreement on the specific thyroid abnormalities and their underlying mechanisms in alcohol dependence. The biological activity of thyroid hormones or the availability of T3 is regulated by the three deiodinase enzymes: D1, D2, and D3. In the context of alcohol use, functionally significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of these deiodinase genes may play a role in HPT dysfunction. METHODS: This study explored the effect of three functionally sign

Neonatal olfactory bulbectomy enhances locomotor activity, exploratory behavior and binding of NMDA receptors in pre-pubertal rats.

In this study, we investigated the effect of neonatal olfactory bulbectomy (nOBX) on behavioral paradigms related to olfaction such as exploratory behavior, locomotor activity in a novel environment and social interaction. We also studied the effect of nOBX on the activity of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) subtype of glutamate receptors during development. The behavioral effects of nOBX (postnatal day 7, PD7) were investigated in pre- (PD30) and post-pubertal (PD60) Wistar rats. NMDA receptor activity was measured with [(125)I]MK-801 in the brain regions associated with the olfactory circuitr

Low birth weight (LBW) infants' exploratory behavior at 12 and 24 months: effects of intraventricular hemorrhage and mothers' attention directing behaviors.

Medically high-risk (HR), low birth weight (LBW) preterm infants (n = 11) with significant degrees of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) were seen at 12 and 24 months of age. This HR group was compared with a low-risk (LR) LBW preterm group (n = 16) with respiratory distress syndrome or mild grades of IVH, and a normal full-term (FT) group (n = 12). Infants and their mothers were observed in a 10-min toy-centered play interaction to determine if more advanced exploratory play occurred in association with specific maternal attention-directing behaviors. Results showed that the FT infants were ab

Sleep ecology, objective sleep characteristics and behavior problems in preschoolers referred to child protection services: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to environmental risk factors increases the negative impact maltreatment has on children's development. Sleep ecology (i.e., sleep hygiene and home sleeping conditions) can be one of these factors. Poor sleep hygiene and suboptimal home sleeping conditions can alter sleep characteristics, which in turn, may lead to behavior problems (BPs), highly prevalent in maltreated preschoolers. OBJECTIVES: Describe sleep ecology in maltreated preschoolers and explore associations between their sleep ecology, objective sleep characteristics and BPs. METHOD: Parents (n = 22) complete

Intermittent peripheral exposure to lipopolysaccharide induces exploratory behavior in mice and regulates brain glial activity in obese mice.

BACKGROUND: Consecutive peripheral immune challenges can modulate the responses of brain resident microglia to stimuli. High-fat diet (HFD) intake has been reported to stimulate the activation of astrocytes and microglia in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) of the hypothalamus in obese rodents and humans. However, it is unknown whether intermittent exposure to additional peripheral immune challenge can modify HFD-induced hypothalamic glial activation in obese individuals. METHODS: In this study, we administered 1 mg/kg LPS (or saline) by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection to 8-week-old male mice after
