Exposome-based public health interventions for infectious diseases in urban settings.

The COVID-19 pandemic placed public health measures against infectious diseases at the core of global health challenges, especially in cities where more than half of the global population lives. SARS-CoV-2 is an exposure agent recently added to the network of exposures that comprise the human exposome, i.e. the totality of all environmental exposures throughout one's lifetime. At the same time, the application of measures to tackle SARS-CoV-2 transmission leads to changes in the exposome components and in characteristics of urban environments that define the urban exposome, a complementary con

The exposome and the human oral microbiome through the one health lens.

OBJECTIVES: To map and synthesise current evidence on how lifelong biological, environmental, and social exposures, collectively conceptualised as the exposome, interact with the human oral microbiome to influence oral disease development and progression within a One Health framework. DESIGN: A scoping review was conducted to identify peer-reviewed studies published in English that examined the relationships between the exposome and the human oral microbiome. The review followed the Arksey and O'Malley framework, applying its five-stage methodological approach. Comprehensive searches were per

The exposome and pancreatic cancer, lifestyle and environmental risk factors for PDAC.

Pancreatic cancer (PC), particularly pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), is a significant global health issue with high mortality rates. PDAC, though only 3 % of cancer diagnoses, causes 7 % of cancer deaths due to its severity and asymptomatic early stages. Risk factors include lifestyle choices, environmental exposures, and genetic predispositions. Conditions like new-onset type 2 diabetes and chronic pancreatitis also contribute significantly. Modifiable risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, non-alcoholic fatty pancreatic disease (NAFPD), and obesity. Smoking and heavy alc

Exposomics as a tool to investigate differences in health and disease by sex and gender.

The health and disease of an individual is mediated by their genetics, a lifetime of environmental exposures, and interactions between the two. Genetic or biological sex, including chromosome composition and hormone expression, may influence both the types and frequency of environmental exposures an individual experiences, as well as the biological responses an individual has to those exposures. Gender identity, which can be associated with social behaviors such as expressions of self, may also mediate the types and frequency of exposures an individual experiences. Recent advances in exposome-

Modelling the effects of the exposome score within the extended psychosis phenotype.

It has been reported that cumulative measures of risk factors for psychosis might help to predict its development. However, it remains unknown as to whether these measures are also associated with the extended psychosis phenotype that refers to a continuum of features bridging subclinical symptoms with clinically relevant outcomes. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association of the exposome score (ES) with psychosis risk in a non-clinical population. A total of 1100 non-clinical adults (aged 18-35 years, 51.4% females) with a negative history of psychiatric treatment were recruited.

Using wearable devices for assessing the impacts of hair exposome in Brazil.

Previous studies have shown that physicochemical properties of hair can be impacted by internal and environmental exposures ranging from chemical stressors to weather. Besides the effects on hair, these exposures, termed "exposome", can act on specific organs including skin, as a synergistic damaging effect of UV exposure and pollution on human surfaces. The combination of several environmental factors such as sun exposure, temperature, relative humidity, air pollution and photo-oxidation caused by ground level ozone impacts hair properties such as melanin oxidation, protein content, surface q

The Exposome in Melasma: A Comprehensive Review of Etiology, Mechanisms, and Implications for Management.

Melasma is a common pigmentary skin disorder characterised by symmetrical brownish patches on the face, which significantly impacts patients' quality of life. This article provides a comprehensive review of the latest research progress on melasma from the perspective of the exposome, a dynamic interactive model. The exposome encompasses all environmental exposures and their biological responses experienced by an individual throughout their lifespan. We systematically explore the synergistic pathogenic mechanisms of endogenous exposures (such as hormonal levels, oxidative stress, thyroid dysfun

Radiologic exposomics: imaging the environmental imprint on cancer for precision oncology.

Environmental exposures-such as airborne pollutants, metals, and urban stressors-contribute to cancer development and progression, yet their downstream biological effects remain difficult to characterize in vivo. Quantitative medical imaging may help fill this gap. Radiomics, in particular, offers access to tissue-level patterns shaped by chronic injury and microenvironmental remodeling. In this review, we discuss the rationale for linking geospatial exposure assessment with CT- and MRI-derived imaging biomarkers and outline how radiologic features may reflect processes associated with long-te

The data substrate of exposome intelligence: an interoperability profile for untargeted metabolomics.

Untargeted metabolomics, anchored in high-resolution mass spectrometry, has matured into the central analytical platform of human exposomics. It can capture endogenous biology, diet, drugs, microbial chemistry, environmental contaminants, and their transformation products from a single biological sample. Yet exposome science remains stubbornly single-study: most untargeted exposomics publications stand alone, featuring tables, partial annotations, and semi-quantitative intensities that cannot be combined across cohorts. The bottleneck is no longer instrumentation or annotation; it is interoper

The exposome and inflammatory bowel disease: a framework for primary and primordial prevention.

The role of the environment in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is acknowledged as being critical, yet enquiry into the exposome and IBD is limited. Recognizing the exposome as encompassing all physical, chemical, biological and psychosocial factors that influence human health over the lifespan is central to unravelling its role in IBD, as well as overlapping immune-mediated diseases. Here, we summarize the latest in exposome research in IBD, differentiate between early life and later exposures, highlight the limitations of traditional epidemiological methods and introduce lesser-explored expo

Exposomics: a review of methodologies, applications, and future directions in molecular medicine.

The exposome is the measure of all the exposures of an individual in a lifetime and how those exposures relate to health. Exposomics is the emerging field of research to measure and study the totality of the exposome. Exposomics can assist with molecular medicine by furthering our understanding of how the exposome influences cellular and molecular processes such as gene expression, epigenetic modifications, metabolic pathways, and immune responses. These molecular alterations can aid as biomarkers for the diagnosis, disease prediction, early detection, and treatment and offering new avenues fo

Dried blood spots analysis for targeted and non-targeted exposomics.

Dried blood spots (DBS) are an established sample type, widely used in newborn screening programs for monitoring metabolic diseases. Their minimally invasive nature offers great promise for assessing chemical exposures, particularly during early life stages and in large-scale epidemiological studies. However, comprehensive evaluations of key analytical parameters such as extraction efficiency and matrix effects across multiple chemical classes remain limited. Moreover, the promising approach of broadly combining targeted and non-targeted mass spectrometric data evaluation remains unexplored in

[Exposome and prostate cancer: Experience in a remote hospital in French Guiana].

INTRODUCTION: West Guiana is characterized by a precarious, poor, dispersed population, exposed to infectious and chemical factors. Prostate cancer is the leading cancer in terms of incidence in men. We examined its characteristics, management and main exposomes in this context. METHODS: This is a retrospective, descriptive, observational, monocentric study. We considered general external expositions (medico-social status, precariousness, geographical remoteness, culture), specific external (viral serologies, occupation, hypothesizing chemical exposures), and risk factors (comorbidities, over

Role of the Exposome in Neurodegenerative Disease: Recent Insights and Future Directions.

Neurodegenerative diseases are increasing in prevalence and place a significant burden on society. The causes are multifactorial and complex, and increasing evidence suggests a dynamic interplay between genes and the environment, emphasizing the importance of identifying and understanding the role of lifelong exposures, known as the exposome, on the nervous system. This review provides an overview of recent advances toward defining neurodegenerative disease exposomes, focusing on Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease. We present the current state of the fi

The role of exposome in acne: results from an international patient survey.

BACKGROUND: Acne severity and its response to treatment may be influenced by internal and external factors: the exposome. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this international real-life survey was to assess the most involved exposome factors in acne. METHODS: Eleven thousand individuals, aged between 15 and 39 years, with clinically confirmed acne or without acne, defined by age, gender and prevalence, were invited to participate in an Internet survey of 63 questions in order to assess the frequency of identified acne exposome factors. RESULTS: Data from 6679 questionnaires were used for statistical an

Personal assessment of the external exposome during pregnancy and childhood in Europe.

The human exposome affects child development and health later in life, but its personal external levels, variability, and correlations are largely unknown. We characterized the personal external exposome of pregnant women and children in eight European cities. Panel studies included 167 pregnant women and 183 children (aged 6-11 years). A personal exposure monitoring kit composed of smartphone, accelerometer, ultraviolet (UV) dosimeter, and two air pollution monitors were used to monitor physical activity (PA), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), black carbon, traffic-related noise, UV-B radiatio
