Does residual valence at the end of extinction predict fear after renewal: A conceptual replication.

Anxiety disorders are common and despite effective treatments relapse rates remain high. In the laboratory, fear conditioning is used to investigate the processes underlying the acquisition, extinction and subsequent return of fear. It is understood that in extinction, the original fear is not unlearnt, but rather overlayed with new safety learning. It is currently unclear why this safety learning remains for some while it disappears for others leading to relapse. In human fear conditioning, electrodermal responding and self-reported fear of the conditional stimuli (CSs) are often used to moni

Human-operant evaluation of synthesized alternative reinforcement and resurgence.

Basic research suggests that differential reinforcement with synthesized alternative reinforcement (i.e., delivery of two or more qualitatively different reinforcers contingent on a single alternative response) increases resurgence during disruptions to the contingency. We evaluated whether these findings extended to human participants using a gamified computer task within a three-phase resurgence evaluation across three experimental groups. In Phase 1, target responses produced isolated reinforcement across all groups. In Phase 2, target responses were placed on extinction across all groups b

The Near-Miss Effect in Slot Machines: A Review and Experimental Analysis Over Half a Century Later.

In games of chance, a near miss is said to occur when feedback for a loss approximates a win. For instance, obtaining "cherry-cherry-lemon" on a slot machine could be considered a near miss. Sixty-six years ago, B.F. Skinner first proposed the idea that near-miss events might reinforce continued play in slot machines, and despite some inconsistencies in the experimental literature, belief in this "near-miss effect" has remained strong. In the present manuscript, we will review this literature and present experimental assessments of the near-miss effect on the frequency of the gambling response

Segregated populations of hippocampal principal CA1 neurons mediating conditioning and extinction of contextual fear.

Learning processes mediating conditioning and extinction of contextual fear require activation of several key signaling pathways in the hippocampus. Principal hippocampal CA1 neurons respond to fear conditioning by a coordinated activation of multiple protein kinases and immediate early genes, such as cFos, enabling rapid and lasting consolidation of contextual fear memory. The extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk) additionally acts as a central mediator of fear extinction. It is not known however, whether these molecular events take place in overlapping or nonoverlapping neuronal popula

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) behaviour explained by dysfunctioning reinforcement and extinction processes.

Inattentiveness, overactivity and impulsiveness are presently regarded as the main clinical symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Inattention is, however, a characteristic of most psychiatric disorders. It is argued that the ADHD Inattentive subtype may have heterogeneous origins and be qualitatively different from the ADHD Hyperactive/Impulsive subtype. At the neurobiological level, ADHD symptoms may to a large extent be caused by a dysfunctioning dopamine system: A dysfunctioning meso-limbo-cortical dopamine branch will produce altered reinforcement and extinction proc

Combined effects of reinstatement and spontaneous recovery.

Prior research has examined combined forms of behavioral recurrence, showing that relapse is greater when these forms occur together than when each is studied in isolation. However, this enhancement effect has not yet been explored in the joint expression of two phenomena: reinstatement, defined as the reappearance of extinguished behavior following response-independent or response-dependent exposure to consequences (or consequence-associated cues), and spontaneous recovery, defined as the recurrence of a response after an interval following extinction. The present study evaluated whether dela

High-frequency gamblers show increased resistance to extinction following partial reinforcement.

Behaviours that have been rewarded intermittently persist for longer during periods of non-reward than behaviours that have been rewarded continuously. This classic phenomenon is known as the partial reinforcement extinction effect. For decades it has been generally understood that this phenomenon is fundamental to the persistence of gambling in the absence of winning. One obvious, yet untested hypothesis arising from this is that persistent (here, high-frequency) gamblers might be more sensitive to partial reinforcement contingencies. Therefore, our aim was to test the hypothesis that compare

The role of tissue-type plasminogen activator system in amphetamine-induced conditional place preference extinction and reinstatement.

Extracellular serine proteases of the plasminogen activator family (tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) may modulate synaptic adhesion and associate with learning behavior. Psychostimulants strongly induce their expression in the mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway, but cocaine preferentially induces uPA, whereas morphine and amphetamine preferentially induce tPA. tPA-expressing animals displayed enhanced conditional place preference (CPP) for amphetamine compared with uPA-overexpressing animals. Thus, modulation of the plasminogen system in the b

Genetically-based behavioral traits influence the effects of Shuttle Box avoidance overtraining and extinction upon intertrial responding: a study with the Roman rat strains.

In the present study, we evaluated the effects of extended exposure procedures to contextual fear cues as a way of reducing intertrial responses (ITRs), a characteristic stereotyped behavior displayed in 2-way Shuttle Box avoidance overtraining. We used rat strains psychogenetically selected for efficient (Roman high-avoidance; RHA) versus poor 2-way Shuttle Box performance (Roman low-avoidance; RLA), the former being fearless/impulsive relative to the latter. Additionally, Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were compared with RHAs to have a measure of the ITRs exhibited by another, non-selected group o

Conditioned taste aversion in vasopressin-deficient rats (Brattleboro strain).

Brattleboro rats are homozygous for diabetes insipidus (DI), lacking the ability to synthesize vasopressin. Previous studies reported learning deficits in DI rats on passive avoidance tasks using footshock. Other studies, however, could not replicate these results. In two experiments, we studied the learning of DI and control Long Evans (LE) rats in a different avoidance paradigm: conditioned taste aversion (CTA). In the first experiment a mild CTA to saccharin was established gradually using low levels of an illness-inducing agent (lithium chloride). In the second experiment a strong CTA was

Spinosin ameliorates post-traumatic stress disorder-like behaviors via 5-HT1A receptor in mice.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe mental illness characterized by increased arousal, intrusion, avoidance, and negative cognitive alterations following exposure to fatal stresses or psychological trauma. In this study, we explored the ameliorating effects of spinosin on PTSD-like behaviors in PTSD model mice induced by single prolonged stress (SPS). A single dose of spinosin (3 mg/kg, p.o.) ameliorated PTSD-like behaviors as assessed using the elevated plus-maze test, marble burying test, Y-maze test, tail suspension test, and fear extinction test. Furthermore, we discovered th

The evolutionary origin of the collective unconscious and the appeal of research on Neanderthals and other ancient humans.

Why does research on Neanderthals attract public attention far beyond its immediate scientific relevance? Such fascination may reflect more than intellectual curiosity; it may involve the activation of deep symbolic structures that Carl Jung termed the collective unconscious. Integrating evolutionary biology, genomics, paleoanthropology, and psychology, I address a question Jung did not explicitly pose: when, along the human evolution, did the collective unconscious originate? I argue that this structure emerged gradually rather than suddenly. Homo erectus established a cognitive floor charact

Value control of punishment.

Punishment raises a basic question for human cognition: Do agents suppress actions because they represent the negative consequences those actions produce? Everyday deterrence, from parental reprimands to legal sanctions, assumes that people regulate behavior by learning what their actions cause and by evaluating those consequences negatively. However, in spite of this widely held assumption, experimental evidence that punished instrumental behavior is controlled by the current value of the punisher is currently lacking. To test this idea, we applied an outcome revaluation procedure to instrume

Advancements in the Assessment and Treatment of Pediatric OCD.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The paper provides a brief expert overview of key findings in research that has advanced understanding of the phenomenology, underlying mechanisms, assessment, and treatment of childhood OCD. RECENT FINDINGS: There have been advancements in the phenomenology and underlying mechanisms. For instance, OCD presentations are being studied in more diverse populations resulting in new insights regarding OCD symptom pathogenesis (e.g., genetic and epigenetic markers). Additionally, there has been a greater recognition of the role of avoidance and accommodation behaviors in the phen

Threat Acquisition and Extinction Differences Between Patients With Panic Disorder or Specific Phobia and Non-Clinical Controls: A Systematic Review.

The study of threat conditioning and extinction processes in anxiety disorders (AD) may further our understanding of the genesis, maintenance, and treatment of these conditions. As it stands, there have been multiple systematic reviews carried out in this area. Patient-control differences in threat acquisition and extinction have been investigated in relation to ADs, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, this remains to be investigated in either panic disorder (PD) or specific phobia (SP). In this paper, a narrative systematic review was carried out t

Extinct and extant termites reveal the fidelity of behavior fossilization in amber.

Fossils encompassing multiple individuals provide rare direct evidence of behavioral interactions among extinct organisms. However, the fossilization process can alter the spatial relationship between individuals and hinder behavioral reconstruction. Here, we report a Baltic amber inclusion preserving a female-male pair of the extinct termite species Electrotermes affinis. The head-to-abdomen contact in the fossilized pair resembles the tandem courtship behavior of extant termites, although their parallel body alignment differs from the linear alignment typical of tandem runs. To solve this in

Is disgust more resistant to extinction than fear? A meta-analytic review of laboratory paradigms.

Disgust can be acquired via evaluative conditioning; a process by which a neutral stimulus (conditioned stimulus; CS) comes to be evaluated as disgusting due to its pairing with an inherently disgusting stimulus (unconditioned stimulus; US). Research has shown that conditioned disgust responses are resistant to extinction which may have implications for disorders (i.e., contamination-based obsessive-compulsive disorder, specific phobias, and post-traumatic stress disorder) in which heightened disgust has been implicated. Importantly, extinction is the primary mechanism by which exposure therap

Placoderms.

For over 70 million years, during the Paleozoic, the placoderms (Greek for 'plated skin'), an extinct group of armoured fishes, were the most abundant and diverse vertebrates on our planet. Some of the first placoderm fossils discovered - such as Bothriolepis with its bone-covered pectoral fins - seemed so bizarre that they were thought to represent turtles or ancient beetles. All placoderms bear thick overlapping dermal plates around the head (called the 'head shield') and an area of the body covered in similar overlapping plates enveloping the pectoral to anal region (called the 'trunk-shiel

Enhanced fear acquisition in individuals with evening chronotype. A virtual reality fear conditioning/extinction study.

Circadian rhythms have received increasing attention within the context of mental disorders. Evening chronotype has been associated with enhanced risk to develop anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The classical fear conditioning paradigm is a powerful tool to reveal key mechanisms of anxiety and PTSD. We used this paradigm to study the neurocognitive basis of the association between chronotype and fear responses in healthy humans. 20 participants with evening chronotype and 20 controls (i.e., intermediate chronotype) completed a 2-day Pavlovian fear learning and extinction virt

Neural activity in afferent projections to the infralimbic cortex is associated with individual differences in the recall of fear extinction.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by an impaired ability to extinguish fear responses to trauma-associated cues. Studies in humans and non-human animals point to differences in the engagement of certain frontal cortical regions as key mediators determining whether or not fear extinction is successful, however the neural circuit interactions that dictate the differential involvement of these regions are not well understood. To better understand how individual differences in extinction recall are reflected in differences in neural circuit activity, we labeled projections to
