Amycolatopsis sulphurea as the first reported agent of endophthalmitis in a patient after penetrating eye trauma with intraocular foreign body: A case report.

We report an Amycolatopsis sulphurea endophthalmitis after the surgical repair of penetrating eye trauma with a metallic intraocular foreign body. A 27-year-old male referred with occupational injury by a nail from his left eye. Endophthalmitis occurred 12 h after the removal of foreign body and repair of the globe. The culture of vitreus samples revealed gram-positive bacillus proliferation, confirming A. sulphurea. Endophthalmitis was eradicated successfully with intravitreal, topical, and systemic antibiotics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case, reporting A. sulphurea endo

Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty for corneal decompensation due to migrating metallic intracorneal foreign bodies in an aphakic eye following a 39-year-old blast injury: A case report.

PURPOSE: To report the use of Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) for secondary surgical removal of intraocular foreign bodies (IOFB) years after the trauma as migration occurred through the endothelium, damaging the endothelium, and causing corneal edema. OBSERVATIONS: We report the case of a blast injury in 1972, that led to left eye traumatic cataract managed with vitrectomy and lensectomy. Although thorough removal was attempted, some corneal and conjunctival foreign bodies remained.Despite aphakia, the patient maintained acceptable best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (0.30

Sarcoidosis and sarcoidal foreign body reaction after permanent eye makeup application: Analysis by immunohistochemistry with commercially available antibodies specific to Cutibacterium acnes and Mycobacteria.

We report two cases of eyebrow granulomas in patients who underwent a permanent eye makeup procedure. A rash was observed 16 months after the procedure in Case 1, and 10 years after the procedure in Case 2. Histopathologically, both patients exhibited noncaseating epithelioid cell granulomas. In Case 1, most of the black-brown granules of the permanent makeup were not present in the granulomas but were localized in the upper dermis. In contrast, in Case 2, some of the black-brown granules were phagocytized in the granulomas, preferentially within the giant cells. Based on systemic examinations

Intraoperative Optical Coherence Tomography-guided 25G Microamount Trajectory Vitrectomy for the Treatment of Penetrating Ocular Injury Caused by a Foreign Body in the Right Eye: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a real-time three-dimensional tomography optical imaging technology that uses near-infrared waves to take cross-sectional pictures of the retina and other tissues. A few studies have reported the use of intraoperative OCT navigation for the removal of foreign bodies from the eyeball during surgery. The objective is to present a single case with a small foreign body (not embedded in the retina) treated with intraoperative OCT guided 25G micro-amount trajectory vitrectomy. CASE PRESENTATION: The examination of a 25-year-old man, who suffered fro

Explosive intraocular foreign bodies.

We examined two patients, each with a foreign body composed of smokeless gunpowder in the vitreous body of one eye and multiple similar foreign bodies in the eyelids, conjunctiva, and cornea. No damage to the eye was caused by the retention of these foreign bodies for over three years in one case and two years in the other. The composition of these foreign bodies appeared to be nontoxic to the eye and thus, extraction of the foreign bodies did not seem to be necessary.

[Intraocular foreign bodies of a non-magnetic nature. Retrospective study].

The analysis of 243 cases with perforative eye injuries with intraocular foreign bodies was performed. Of them 183 were caused by non-magnetic and 60 by magnetic foreign bodies. The increased number of perforative injuries caused by non-magnetic foreign bodies was observed (71,2%). A large number of non-magnetic foreign bodies contained copper (76%). In 74% cases non-magnetic foreign bodies were found in the posterior eye segment. By introducing modern diagnostical and surgical methods (1976) the percentage of removed non-magnetic foreign bodies is significantly higher (93%) compared to the pr

Corneal foreign bodies of coconut origin.

Corneal foreign bodies of varied nature have been reported, however, vegetable foreign bodies in the cornea have seldom been described. A case is reported of a male from the Marshall Islands in the Pacific who retained a number of deep corneal foreign bodies after being struck in the eye by a piece of a coconut shell. The foreign bodies caused considerable inflammation which ceased after they were exposed and removed by means of a centrally based lamellar corneal flap. The patient's eye has remained quiet for 4 months following removal of the foreign bodies.

[Localization of intraocular foreign bodies using computed tomography].

PURPOSE: To present the evaluation of computed tomography (CT) application for detecting the intraocular foreign bodies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen computed tomographies of orbit to localise a foreign body were performed in the 2nd Radiology Department at Lublin University School of Medicine from May 1995 to October 1998. During examination 2 mm computed tomography cuts were taken. In almost all cases fundus examination was not possible because of hazy media (cataract, vitreous haemorrhage, endophthalmitis). Pars plana vitrectomy was applied to remove foreign body in all cases. RESULTS: I

Computed tomographic three-dimensional localization and compositional evaluation of intraocular and orbital foreign bodies.

A software program designed for the Siemens Somatom DR3 computed tomographic (CT) scanner provides improved diagnosis, localization, and etiologic description of intraocular and orbital foreign bodies. The program allows information to be analyzed in two different display formats. One format is that of multiplanar reconstruction of the eye and orbit, including an "oblique CT cube" image. This format produces an accurate "three-dimensional" display of both in vitro and in vivo intraocular and orbital foreign bodies. The second display format is that of a histogram. Using this analytic mode, non

[Explosives-based vole traps-A novel injury pattern in the eye region].

BACKGROUND: A novel method for trapping voles is the use of pistol-like explosive tools loaded with bolt-action ammunition. When triggered the vole is killed by the very high gas pressure created. Accidental releases can result in facial and/or eye injuries. The aim of this work was to describe the injury pattern in the patient and to experimentally verify whether there is a risk of penetrating eye injuries. METHODS: Two emergency patients presented to our eye clinic with eye injuries after unintentional triggering of the explosive trap. Based on the new pattern of injury noted, experiments w

Management of a large plant-derived foreign body under the plica semilunaris: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Foreign bodies are a common cause of eye pain and tears; however, the majority of cases involve small foreign bodies. Herein, we report a rare case of a large plant-derived foreign body covered with thorns penetrating the conjunctiva into the subconjunctival plica semilunaris following vigorous eye rubbing. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old woman from rural Leshan presented with persistent redness and swelling on the nasal side of her left eye lasting 10 days. The plica semilunaris appeared elevated, congested, and edematous. A sharp plant-derived tip, approximately 1-mm in length,

Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography in the detection and localization of intraocular foreign bodies.

In this experimental study, various foreign bodies were inserted into fresh bovine eyes, in different localizations. Twenty-one magnetic and non-magnetic foreign bodies, dimensions of which varied from 1.5 x 1.5 x 2 mm to 3.5 x 6 x 7 mm, were tried to detect by computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning. In addition, further dissections were applied to check the ocular damage attributable to movement of the foreign bodies. Ferromagnetic foreign bodies have been shown to move in the eye and the risk of torsional forces being applied to the ferromagnetic foreign body

Undetected intraocular metallic foreign body causing hyphema in a patient undergoing MRI: a rare occurrence demonstrating the limitations of pre-MRI safety screening.

The case reported is of a 47-year-old man with an undetected ferromagnetic metallic intraocular foreign body in the right eye who underwent elective MR examinations for chronic neck and low back pain. The patient underwent the MR scans and subsequently developed blurred vision in his right eye caused by a hyphema associated with an anterior chamber metallic foreign body. Case reports of orbital injuries in patients with intraocular metallic foreign bodies undergoing MRI are rare, with only one prior report in the radiology literature. While the incidence of intraocular foreign bodies causing i
