A recent epidemic of acute conjunctivitis in Dar es Salaam showed again the importance of developing a strong infectious diseases epidemiological surveillance network which is effective in minimising disease outbreaks. The current misunderstanding of diseases causation and management explains the repetitive nature of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) in Dar es Salaam. This article aims at increasing public awareness by elaborating two diseases (Acute Hemorrhagic Conjunctivitis and Paederus spp keratoconjuctivitis, periorbital oedema-"Nairobi red eyes") confused by many as being associated

PURPOSE: To investigate and compare the longitudinal rate of change of Bruch's membrane opening minimum rim width (BMO-MRW) and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in eyes showing optic disc hemorrhage(DH).
DESIGN: Observational case series.
METHODS: A total of 82 subjects(82 eyes) showing DH who had undergone more than five reliable spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) tests were included. BMO-MRW and RNFL were measured with OCT at 3-month intervals. The rates of change in global and each Garway-Heath sector were calculated with a linear mixed-effects mode

We present the case of an 81-year-old woman who developed a bilateral spontaneous suprachoroidal hemorrhage while under treatment with sodium enoxaparin. Temporal suspension of anticoagulant therapy led to an improvement of the choroidal hemorrhage. After three months follow-up, there was a complete reabsorption of the choroidal detachments, but there was a persistent vitreous hemorrhage in the right eye, which had been more severely affected. Pars plana vitrectomy with air tamponade was successfully performed in the right eye. Vision improved to 20/50 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left ey

BACKGROUND: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a necrotizing lymphadenitis, and presents fever of unknown origin and cervical lymphadenopathy. Ocular complications are unusual in KFD. Here we report a case of sub internal limiting membrane (ILM) hemorrhage followed by bilateral optic disc hemorrhage in KFD.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old Japanese man perceived a sudden decrease of right vision 3 days after onset of fever with unknown origin and left cervical lymphadenopathy. At presentation, visual acuity (VA) of right eye was 0.05 in decimal chart (1.30: converted to logarithm of minimum an

INTRODUCTION: Intrapapillary hemorrhage with adjacent peripapillary subretinal hemorrhage (IHAPSH) is a syndrome associated with intrapapillary hemorrhage and peripapillary subretinal hemorrhage that commonly occurs in myopic women. There have been no reports of patients younger than 10 years. We report a case of typical IHAPSH that occurred in a 9-year-old girl in the advanced stages of myopia.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old girl presented with gradually decreasing uncorrected visual acuity in the left eye over the past year, without complaints of floaters or blurred vision. Uncorrected vis

Six of 11 children developed myopia in one eye after vitreous hemorrhage. None had retinopathy of prematurity, glaucoma, aphakia, or scleral buckling. In seven children developing vitreous hemorrhage before 1 year of age, six exhibited a myopic anisometropia in the affected eye of 1.37 to 12.00 diopters (mean, -4.7 diopters; S.D., 4.0). The degree of myopia correlated with the age of onset and duration of media opacification. In the child without myopia, the hemorrhage did not obscure the posterior pole. None of the four children whose hemorrhage occurred after 2 1/2 years of age showed myopic

Traumatic hemorrhagic retinal detachment may prevent successful visual rehabilitation of eyes with severe posterior segment injury. We managed 19 consecutive cases of traumatic hemorrhagic retinal detachment with pars plana vitrectomy, scleral buckling, and fluid-gas exchange, with or without internal drainage of subretinal hemorrhage. We based our approach on the amount of subretinal hemorrhage present and the location of associated retinal breaks. Internal drainage of subretinal hemorrhage was performed in 16 eyes to allow adequate retinopexy to hemorrhagically elevated retinal breaks (9 eye

The aim of our report is to present 2 cases of patients with suprachoroidal hemorrhage (SH). Suprachoroidal hemorrhage occur relatively infrequently and in our cases are not associated with the surgery or postoperative period. The first case was a patient with suprachoroidal hemorrhage following spontaneous corneal penetration after corneal ulcer. The second case was a patient with a suprachoroidal hemorrhage after severe contusion of the eye globe. The most important is rapid diagnosis of disease, differentiation from other eye diseases and initiation of therapy. We discuss clinical symptomat

Uncomplicated posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation was performed in two eyes that had been salvaged after expulsive choroidal hemorrhage during a previous cataract operation and in one eye after loss of the fellow eye from expulsive choroidal hemorrhage. The procedure was performed in a 72-year-old woman three weeks after and in an 81-year-old man four months after the successful management of expulsive choroidal hemorrhage. A third patient, an 84-year-old woman, had posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation in her remaining eye six years after the loss of other eye. All three

PURPOSE: To investigate the characteristics of radiating hemorrhage secondary to exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and its clinical significance.
METHODS: This retrospective, observational case series included 288 eyes of 288 patients who initially presented with submacular hemorrhage secondary to exudative AMD. First, we estimated the incidence of radiating hemorrhage; we then compared the incidence of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) compared with that of the other subtypes of AMD. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images were analyzed to identify the level of hemorrh

PURPOSE/METHODS: We studied a rare initial manifestation of myelodysplastic syndrome in an 82-year-old woman who had acute secondary glaucoma in the right eye and mature cataracts in both eyes.
RESULTS/CONCLUSION: Therapy with glaucoma control medications and cataract extraction in the right eye resulted in expulsive hemorrhage and subsequent enucleation of the right eye. After cataract extraction, examination of the left eye disclosed a central serous retinal detachment and hemorrhage. Histopathologic analysis of the right eye demonstrated myelocytic and lymphocytic infiltration.

Valsalva retinopathy (VR) occurs when a sudden rise in pressure within the thoracic or abdominal cavity results in a pre-retinal hemorrhage. The elevated venous pressure leads to increased blood flow through the retinal vessels, causing the rupture of peripapillary capillaries. This rupture leads to unilateral or bilateral pre-retinal hemorrhage, with blood pooling beneath the inner limiting membrane (ILM). A 29-year-old patient presented to the Emergency Eye Care Unit of the Professor Kornel Gibiński University Hospital Center of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice due to deterioratio
