This meta-analysis review compared eye movement desensitization and reprocessing and cognitive behavior therapy efficacy in reducing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression symptoms. A systematic search for articles published between 2010 and 2020 was conducted using five databases. The RevMan software version 5 was used. Out of 671 studies, 8 fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in this meta-analysis. Three studies reported that eye movement desensitization and reprocessing reduced depression symptoms better than cognitive behavior therapy in both children

Background: There is room for improvement regarding the treatment of severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Intensifying treatment to increase patient retention is a promising development. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an intensive trauma-focused treatment programme over 8 days for individuals suffering from severe PTSD. Method: Treatment was provided for 347 PTSD patients (70% women; mean age = 38.32 years, SD = 11.69) and consisted of daily sessions of prolonged exposure and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy (16 sessi

Background: Mental healthcare for children and adolescents with a history of childhood abuse constitutes a major public health issue. Indeed, abuse exposes children to severe and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) but also to neurodevelopmental and psychological repercussions impacting the developmental trajectory. Trauma-focused care is essential to avoid the chronicization of symptoms and disorders. Objective: The aim of this prospective case series study was to investigate the efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) on complex post-traumatic symptoms and

Background: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is one of the greatest problems with which cancer survivors have to deal. High levels of FCR are characterized by intrusive thoughts about cancer-related events and re-experiencing these events, avoidance of reminders of cancer, and hypervigilance, similar to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy focuses on these images and memories. It is effective in reducing PTSD and may be effective in reducing high levels of FCR.Objective: The aim of the present study is to investigate the effectivene

OBJECTIVE: People with intellectual disabilities may be at a greater risk for exposure to traumatic events and consequently develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is an established treatment for PTSD in the general population, research on people with intellectual disabilities is limited. This review aims to critically appraise for the 1st time case studies published in this area, because no controlled investigations are available at present.
METHOD: An in-depth literature review was conducted, and 6 case studies were identif

Virtual Reality-based Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (VR-EMDR) has been proven effective in treating adults with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, its effectiveness in treating adolescents with MDD is less studied, and its underlying neuroimaging mechanism remains unknown. Sixty-eight adolescents with MDD and 29 adolescent healthy control (HC) were recruited. Adolescents with MDD were randomly allocated to the intervention group and the wait-list control group. The intervention group received 12-session of VR-EMDR, while another group received no psychotherapy. W

BACKGROUND: Traumatic experiences can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For young children, even minor, inconspicuous looking events can lead to posttraumatic stress symptoms. Trauma-focused treatment with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) offers children an age-adapted intervention to help them successfully process traumatic experiences. So far, there has been a lack of well evaluated trauma-focused treatments for young children.
METHODS: These case series examine the effectiveness of a short-term treatment with EMDR therapy for children showing PTSD symptoms a

Recovery of stress-induced structural alterations in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to determine whether symptoms improvement is associated with grey matter (GM) density changes of brain structures involved in PTSD. Two groups of PTSD patients were involved in this study. The first group was treated with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and recovered from their symptoms (recovery group) (n = 11); Patients were scanned prior to therapy (T1), one week (T2) and five months after the end of therapy (T3). The second grou

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), a chronic childhood onset posttraumatic stress disorder, is currently recognized as a treatable condition. It is considered the paradigmatic dissociative condition and carries with it extreme posttraumatic symptomatology. Therapists skilled in the treatment of DID are typically fluent in the uses of hypnosis for stabilization, affect management, building a safe place and grounding to name of few. EMDR, which has come to the forefront of clinical awareness in the last ten years, seems aptly suited for the treatment of trauma, but can be destabilizing. This

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in older adults with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and to explicitly include information about presence of the comorbid psychiatric and somatic disorders as well as a history of traumatic events at treatment start.
METHOD: A nonrandomized feasibility study in a multicenter design was conducted with 25 older PTSD patients (60-84 years). Treatment consisted of weekly 1-hour EMDR sessions for PTSD during 3, 6, or maximum 9 months. PTSD diagnosis was assessed

Introduction: The Flash technique is a novel intervention aimed at rapidly decreasing the subjective disturbance of an aversive memory, thereby serving as a potential way of treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The protocol is used to stimulate clients to engage in positive imagery while being discouraged to actively recollect the targeted disturbing memory. Previous research into the Flash technique's efficacy shows promising results, yet controlled studies are lacking. Objectives: To test the efficacy of the Flash technique, it was compared to an abbreviated eye movement desensiti

Background Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)-centered psychotherapy is an evidence-based treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet symptom trajectories during routine outpatient care vary considerably. Process factors such as therapeutic alliance and treatment intensity may influence outcomes, but their independent and combined contributions in real-world clinical settings remain unclear. This study examined the relationships among therapeutic alliance, treatment intensity, and PTSD symptom change in a naturalistic outpatient context. Methods This single-cente

A single-case study is presented, which describes the application of EMDR for a justice involved health care worker, presenting with active suicidality and self-harm, within the context of high levels of offense-related shame. "Alex" was a 42-year-old female, serving a prison sentence for Theft. Prior to her offense, Alex was a nurse with an unblemished career. Her offending occurred as a result of her addiction to pain medication. Alex attended 20 treatment sessions, which followed the eight phases of EMDR therapy: (i) history taking; (ii) preparation; (iii) assessment; (iv) desensitization;

Background: Trauma exposure is common in (pre) school-aged children and around one-fifth of exposed children meet the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These symptoms can cause severe impairment to a child's functioning and, if left untreated, have negative long-term consequences. Therefore, there is an urgent need for effective treatment to reduce the acute and long-term effects of trauma. However, currently, there are no established empirically validated treatments for PTSD in young children. Objective: To assess the efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing

BACKGROUND: Previous research indicates a high prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among refugees. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is an effective treatment for PTSD for victims of natural disasters, car accidents or other traumatic events. The current study examined the effect of EMDR on symptoms of PTSD and depression by comparing the treatment with a wait-list control condition in Syrian refugees.
METHOD: Adult refugees located in Kilis Refugee Camp at the Turkish-Syrian border with a PTSD diagnosis were randomly allocated to either EMDR

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a well-established therapeutic method to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, how EMDR exerts its therapeutic action has been studied in many types of research but still needs to be completely understood. This is in part due to limited knowledge of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying EMDR, and in part to our incomplete understanding of PTSD. In order to model PTSD, we used a biologically inspired computational model based on firing rate units, encompassing the cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala. Through the m

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an established therapeutic intervention for post-traumatic stress disorder and related conditions, yet its neurobiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. While prevailing models emphasize cognitive processes such as working memory taxation and memory reconsolidation, these accounts may not fully explain the durability and generalization of therapeutic effects. Here, we propose a hypothesis in which bilateral rhythmic stimulation associated with EMDR modulates neuroimmune interactions through state-dependent changes in autonomi
