Effects of steam warming eye masks on choroidal perfusion, visual function, dry eye measures, and symptoms in children with myopia.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Innovative eye warming therapies may enhance comfort and ocular health in paediatric patients, potentially aiding in myopia management. Recognising the impact of ocular surface and perfusion improvements can guide optometrists in adopting non-invasive, supportive interventions to promote eye health and prevent progression of myopia in children. BACKGROUND: This study investigates the effects of steam-warming eye masks on the potential prevention and management of myopia in Chinese children. METHODS: A single-arm design was used, enrolling myopic and pre-myopic children at

Sunglasses to hide behind may also prevent melanoma of the eyes.

In 1967, Sandy Posey pronounced that sunglasses are essential beachwear ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HVBEb-GA1Y ). Now, whole-genome sequencing reveals that ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can contribute to melanomas in the iris and conjunctiva, data that provide a molecular explanation for why it is important to protect our eyes from exposure to UVR.

An epidemiological perspective of ultraviolet exposure--public health concerns.

Over the last 30 years, many countries have developed strong sun protection programs, spurred on by rapidly increasing skin cancer incidence and concerns about stratospheric ozone depletion. More recently, considerable concern has arisen about widespread vitamin D insufficiency, creating a "sun exposure dilemma," since in most regions vitamin D predominantly derives from endogenous synthesis in the skin initiated by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Little attention has been paid to whether a similar dilemma exists for UV-related eye conditions. For the eyes, to our current knowledge, exp

Face, neck, and eye protection: adapting body armour to counter the changing patterns of injuries on the battlefield.

Recent international papers have suggested an urgent need for new methods of protecting the face, neck, and eyes in battle. We made a systematic analysis to identify all papers that reported the incidence and mortality of combat wounds to the face, eyes, or neck in the 21st century, and any papers that described methods of protecting the face, neck, or eyes. Neck wounds were found in 2-11% of injuries in battle, and associated with high mortality, but no new methods of protecting the neck were identified. Facial wounds were found in 6-30% of injuries in battle, but despite the psychological ef

Customized Face Guards as Protective Devices for Ocular Trauma in Futsal Players: A Case Report and Clinical Efficacy Evaluation.

We present a case involving a futsal player with brain concussions and commotio retinae to protect the affected area and support a safe, prompt return to play custom face guard instead of a commercial face guard and sports goggles. For a better fit, we fabricated a custom face guard, for which a facial impression was taken using dental alginate material and plaster in July 2019. The following month, the custom face guard was set on the player's face so that its outline provided minimal coverage of the nose area compared with a conventional face guard. The field of view during play and the guar

Solar retinopathy: visual prognosis in 20 cases.

A report of 20 cases of solar retinopathy associated with watching an eclipse of the sun is presented. Visual prognosis was generally good and most patients had good vision at the end of six months. Paramacular scotomata, image distortion and macular changes were, however, still present in the majority of patients. Transmission of energy through various protective devices was measured with a fluxmeter. The finding of retinal damage after exposure of even short duration through protective devices that reduce the incident irradiance of the sun up to 5,000 times indicates that the damage observed

OCCUPATIONAL RADIATION EXPOSURE DOSE OF THE EYE IN DEPARTMENT OF CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA PHYSICIAN.

Interventional radiology (IR) procedures tend to be complex, which delivers high radiation exposure to patient. In the present study, we measured the radiation exposure dose [Hp(3)] in the eye using a direct eye dosemeter placed next to the physician's eye during procedures. Physicians wore a direct eye dosemeter just lateral to eyes and an additional direct eye dosemeter outside the radiation protective eyeglasses close to their eyes. Additionally, a neck glass badge was worn at the neck. Although we found a positive correlation between the left neck glass badge dose [Hp(0.07)] and the left e

Effects of non-pharmacological interventions on sleep in patients with critical illness: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Adequate sleep is vital for recovery in patients with critical illness, yet sleep in intensive care units (ICUs) is widely disrupted. Although various non-pharmacological strategies have been proposed, evidence remains inconsistent, and the most effective intervention for improving ICU sleep has not been clearly established. In this review, we evaluated the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions for sleep promotion and identified the most effective strategies for improving sleep quality among ICU patients. Studies implementing non-pharmacological sleep-promoting interventions and e

Disrupting the transmission of influenza a: face masks and ultraviolet light as control measures.

In the event of an influenza pandemic, where effective vaccine and antiviral drugs may be lacking, disrupting environmental transmission of the influenza virus will be the only viable strategy to protect the public. We discuss 2 such modalities, respirators (face masks) and ultraviolet (UV) light. Largely overlooked, the potential utility of each is underappreciated. The effectiveness of disposable face masks may be increased by sealing the edges of the mask to the face. Reusable masks should be stockpiled, because the supply of disposable masks will likely prove inadequate. UV light, directed

"Simulation of medical goggles to stop airborne transmission of viruses: computational fluid dynamics in ergonomics".

This paper presents a position statement on combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and ergonomics to guide the design of personal protective equipment (PPE). We used CFD to simulate 36 exposure scenarios of an infected patient sneezing at different distances and different angles while facing either the front or the side of a healthcare worker with or without goggles. The results show that medical goggles indeed block most droplets from the outer surface, but many droplets still deposit on the bottom edge (especially at the nose), inside the air holes and on the side edge. However, the ed

Pediatric photosensitivity disorders.

Photosensitivity disorders in childhood are rare, with the notable exception of overexposure as sunburn, and therefore require a more circumspect approach. Practitioners who treat children are key players in identifying and managing the many photosensitivity disorders that rarely present in childhood. A classic photodistribution of skin findings may suggest photosensitivity, but a correct diagnosis depends on a detailed history correlated with clinical findings.

Photoprotection.

UNLABELLED: Many agents affect the transmission of ultraviolet light to human skin. These include naturally occurring photoprotective agents (ozone, pollutants, clouds, and fog), naturally occurring biologic agents (epidermal chromophores), physical photoprotective agents (clothing, hats, make-ups, sunglasses, and window glass), and ultraviolet light filters (sunscreen ingredients and sunless tanning agents). In addition, there are agents that can modulate the effects of ultraviolet light on the skin (antioxidants and others). All of the above are reviewed in this article. LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

Is Ocular Safety in Orthopaedics Overlooked? A Systematic Review of Annual Ocular Radiation Exposure and Protective Measures.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative fluoroscopy is increasingly common in orthopaedics, although recent guidelines have reduced the maximum recommended exposure to 20 mSv annually. A systematic review of the literature was conducted to comprehensively assess current adherence to exposure guidelines, identify practice settings at increased risk for exposure, and determine the best practices and personal protective equipment for ocular radiation risk mitigation. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: In this systematic review we asked: (1) Is the annual amount of eye irradiation received by orthopaedic surgeons below the

Spectral transmittance of UV-blocking soft contact lenses: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Three major parts of sunlight consist of visible, ultraviolet and infrared radiation. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can result in a spectrum of skin and ocular diseases. UV-blocking contact lenses help provide protection against harmful UV radiation. We studied the ultraviolet and visible light rays transmission in some soft UV-blocking contact lenses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four available tinted soft lenses (Acuvue Moist, Zeiss CONTACT Day 30 Air spheric, Pretty Eyes and Sauflon 56 UV) have been evaluated for UV and visible transmission. Effectiveness of a locally made eye protector for neonates treated with phototherapy at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), Malawi: a bench study.

BACKGROUND: The highest incidence of severe neonatal jaundice occurs in Africa at 667.8 per 10,000 live births. At the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), approximately 75% of neonates have clinical jaundice, with up to 15% requiring treatment. While phototherapy is the standard treatment, the intense blue light poses the risk of retinal damage, which has led to the routine practice of eye protection for neonates receiving this therapy. Nonetheless, QECH, like other low-resource settings, lacks standard eye shields, forcing staff to improvise with different materials to shield the neonate

Moisture chamber goggles for the treatment of postoperative dry eye in patients receiving SMILE and FS-LASIK surgery.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of refractive surgery-related dry eye disease (DED) is rising due to the increasing popularity of corneal refractive surgery. The moisture chamber goggles (MCGs) have been shown to tear evaporation by increasing local humidity and minimizing airflow. The current study aims to evaluate the efficacy of moisture chamber goggles for refractive surgery-related DED. METHODS: In this nonrandomized open-label controlled study, 78 participants (156 eyes) receiving refractive surgery were enrolled between July 2021 and April 2022, and sequentially allocated to MGC and control
