A Systematic Review of Eye-Tracking Studies of Gambling-Related Attentional Biases.

Previous research has identified attentional biases towards addiction-related stimuli, including gambling-related stimuli. Eye-tracking is considered the gold standard methodology for measuring attentional biases, yet no review to date has examined its use in measuring gambling-related attentional biases. This systematic review synthesized the literature using eye-tracking to examine attentional biases among people who gamble. We reviewed articles from Web of Science and PubMed that were published from 1990 to 2021. A total of 11 articles were included, with sample sizes ranging from 38 to 173

Impaired Inhibitory Control of Saccadic Eye Movements in Cervical Dystonia: An Eye-Tracking Study.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of cervical dystonia is still unclear. Recent evidence points toward a network disorder affecting several brain areas. The objective of this study was to assess the saccadic inhibition as a marker of corticostriatal function in cervical dystonia. METHODS: We recruited 31 cervical dystonia patients and 17 matched healthy controls. Subjects performed an overlap prosaccade, an antisaccade, and a countermanding task on an eye tracker to assess automatic visual response and response inhibition. RESULTS: Cervical dystonia patients made more premature saccades (P = 0

Eye-Tracking Based Measurement Framework For Quantifying Visual Attention In Screen-Based Interactive Digital Art Environments.

This article presents a gaze-enabled measurement framework designed to quantify visual attention during interactive digital art experiences and to link attention dynamics to experiential outcomes. Unlike traditional static art viewing, interactive digital art involves dynamic media, multi-source information, and continuous feedback loops, which challenge standard eye-tracking methodologies. The proposed system integrates eye-tracking acquisition, interaction logging, timestamp synchronization, dynamic Area of Interest (AOI) mapping, and metric computation into a unified pipeline. The protocol

Towards Affordable Smartphone Eye Tracking for Nystagmus Analysis and Monitoring.

Nystagmus, an involuntary oscillatory eye movement, is an important diagnostic marker for various neurological and vestibular disorders. However, current clinical eye tracking systems are expensive, require specialized equipment and training, thus limiting their usability at scale. This study proposes a smartphone-based eye tracking pipeline for nystagmus analysis, utilizing a deep learning-based segmentation model and a circle-fitting algorithm to estimate pupil position. Two variations of U-Net segmentation models - a 3-class (sclera, iris, background) and a 4-class (sclera, iris, pupil, bac

Face Processing in School Children with Dyslexia: Neuropsychological and Eye-tracking Findings.

Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental difficulty affecting reading, but recent data in adults suggest that difficulties also extend to face processing. Here, we tested face processing in school children with and without dyslexia, using eye-tracking and neuropsychological tests. Children with dyslexia didn't differ significantly from controls in face gaze patterns, face memory, or face identification accuracy. However, they were slower and more heterogeneous, with larger within-group variance than controls. Increased gaze patterns toward the eyes were associated with better face memory in controls.

Abnormal eye movements in Parkinson's disease: From experimental study to clinical application.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that integrates a series of motor symptoms and non-motor symptoms, making early recognition challenging. The exploration of biomarkers is urgently required. Abnormal eye movements in PD have been reported to appear in a variety of ways since eye tracking technology was developed, such as decreased saccade amplitude, extended saccade latency, and unique saccade patterns. Non-invasive, objective and simple eye tracking has the potential to provide effective biomarkers for the PD diagnosis, progression and cognitive impairment, as well as id

A window into eye movement dysfunction following mTBI: A scoping review of magnetic resonance imaging and eye tracking findings.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), commonly known as concussion, is a complex neurobehavioral phenomenon affecting six in 1000 people globally each year. Symptoms last between days and years as microstructural damage to axons and neurometabolic changes result in brain network disruption. There is no clinically available objective biomarker to diagnose the severity of injury or monitor recovery. However, emerging evidence suggests eye movement dysfunction (e.g., saccades and smooth pursuits) in patients with mTBI. Patients with a higher symptom burden and prolonged recovery time following inju

Recent updates of eye movement abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia: A scoping review.

AIM: Although eye-tracking technology expands beyond capturing eye data just for the sole purpose of ensuring participants maintain their gaze at the presented fixation cross, gaze technology remains of less importance in clinical research. Recently, impairments in visual information encoding processes indexed by novel gaze metrics have been frequently reported in patients with schizophrenia. This work undertakes a scoping review of research on saccadic dysfunctions and exploratory eye movement deficits among patients with schizophrenia. It gathers promising pieces of evidence of eye movement

Advantages and artifacts of high-speed OLED monitors for vision, eye-tracking, and EEG research.

The recent introduction of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) monitors with refresh rates of 240 Hz or more opens new possibilities for their use as precise stimulation devices in vision research, experimental psychology, and electrophysiology. These affordable high-speed monitors, targeted at video gamers, promise several advantages over cathode ray tube (CRT) and liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors. Unlike LCDs, OLEDs have self-emitting pixels that can show true black, resulting in superior contrast, a broad color spectrum, and wide viewing angles. More importantly, the latest OLEDs offer

The effect of uncertainty on attentional bias in subclinical worriers: Evidence from reaction time and eye-tracking.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: High-worry individuals have been assumed to show attentional bias towards threat, particularly under high uncertainty. This study experimentally investigated the effect of uncertainty on attentional bias in subclinical worriers. METHODS: A visual dot-probe task combined with eye-tracking was used to assess participants' attentional bias towards blurred and unfiltered stimuli. Fifty high-worry and 47 low-worry participants were randomly assigned to either the high- or low-uncertainty threat condition. Aversive noise bursts were delivered either unpredictably (the hig

Investigating Visual Perception Impairments through Serious Games and Eye Tracking to Anticipate Handwriting Difficulties.

Dysgraphia is a learning disability that causes handwritten production below expectations. Its diagnosis is delayed until the completion of handwriting development. To allow a preventive training program, abilities not directly related to handwriting should be evaluated, and one of them is visual perception. To investigate the role of visual perception in handwriting skills, we gamified standard clinical visual perception tests to be played while wearing an eye tracker at three difficulty levels. Then, we identified children at risk of dysgraphia through the means of a handwriting speed test.

An Eye Tracking Investigation of Young People's Gaze Behaviour to Gambling and Non-Gambling Moving Adverts.

INTRODUCTION: Data from several areas of public health (e.g., harmful alcohol and tobacco) are consistent with the assertion that children's exposure to advertising strategies increases intention to consume such products. Most studies have measured self-rated impact of gambling advertising using questionnaires. Given that gambling advertisements come in different forms such as print media/television advertising and contain variable content, it is difficult to understand using subjective measures which aspects of the gambling advertisements increase craving and desire to trigger a gambling sess

Attentional bias to food during free and instructed viewing in anorexia nervosa: An eye tracking study.

Previous research has shown that patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) show an attentional bias to food. However, due to different conceptualizations of attentional bias and the use of various paradigms, results are inconclusive and more precise insights into the exact nature of this attentional bias are needed. Therefore, an eye-tracking paradigm with food (low and high caloric) and non-food (objects) pictures was used to investigate biases in AN patients (n = 25) compared to healthy controls (n = 22). Several indices of visual attention were examined, both during free (initial orientation, fix
