Clinical, morphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular genetic analysis of bilateral ocular adnexal lymphoid neoplasms in 17 patients.

We investigated the clinical, morphologic, immunologic, and molecular genetic characteristics of the lymphoid tumors occurring in 17 patients with bilateral ocular adnexal lymphoid neoplasia. We found no obvious differences in the age, sex, clinical appearance, or ophthalmic findings between patients with unilateral and those with bilateral ocular adnexal lymphoid neoplasms. Five orbital and two conjunctival lymphoid neoplasms removed from five patients were polyclonal pseudolymphomas, while nine orbital, eight conjunctival, and two eyelid lymphoid neoplasms removed from 12 patients were monoc

[Transplants from the hard palate: method for mucosal graft reconstruction of the upper eyelid].

BACKGROUND: Mucosal grafts from the hard palate for reconstruction of the posterior lamella of the upper eyelid were compared for three different indications. The plastic reconstruction of the upper eyelid was carried out in patients with symblepharon and upper eyelid entropion following an autoimmune disease, in patients with subtotal or total upper eyelid resection due to a neoplasm and in patients with mucous membrane trauma using autogenous mucosal grafts from the hard palate. PATIENTS: In this retrospective comparative interventional case series 23 eyes from 19 patients were included in

Tarsal Epithelial Cysts: Prevalence, Case Series, and Synthesis of Existing Literature.

PURPOSE: Tarsal epithelial cysts (TECs) are squamous epithelial-lined lesions of the eyelid that are often mistaken for chalazia or epidermal inclusion cysts. They remain poorly described in the literature. This study is designed to characterize the prevalence and clinical features of TEC. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective review of adult patients with a diagnosis of eyelid neoplasm, eyelid cyst, hordeolum, stye, or chalazion between January 1, 2011 and July 1, 2017. Among this cohort, we identified patients with a histopathologic diagnosis of TEC. We also conducted a PubMed

Giant Merkel cell carcinoma of the eyelid: a case report and review of the literature.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare cutaneous tumor and cases located in the eyelid have been described, but still its rarity may lead to difficulty in diagnosis and delay in treatment. A 51-year-old female patient that presented with large lesions in the eyelid underwent surgery after the diagnosis of acute chalazion. Following respiratory distress secondary to pulmonary metastasis, the patient's condition deteriorated and was not fit for complete excision treatment. Histopathological investigation of the biopsies, taken from the tumor, revealed that it was undifferentiated small cell carci

Apocrine gland tumor of the eyelid in a dog.

A 13-year-old male Shetland Sheepdog with progressive exophthalmos had a neoplastic mass in the ocular adnexa. Histologically, this neoplasm was composed of duct-forming epithelial cells with decapitation secretion. Tumor cells invaded the globe through the tunica conjunctiva and replaced the vitreous body. The cornea, iris, ciliary body, and retina were extensively destroyed. Both the epithelial and spindle-shaped myoepithelial cells showed nuclear atypia and mitotic activity in the globe. The primary tumor was diagnosed as adenocarcinoma, probably originating from apocrine sweat glands of th

Relationship between actinic keratosis and malignant skin lesions on the eyelid.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the variables possibly related to actinic keratosis and malignant skin lesions on the eyelid. METHODS: A prospective study of patients with suspected eyelid malignancy was conducted. The participants underwent a 2-mm punch biopsy at two opposite sites of the lesion for diagnosis, and the results were compared with those of the histopathological study of the surgical excised specimen. The patients with an actinic keratosis component were divided into two groups (actinic keratosis-associated malignancy and actinic keratosis alone), which were compared for the following vari

Orbital solitary fibrous tumor: a case report and review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm typically arising in the pleura and involving the orbit as its most common extra-pleural location. We herein describe a well documented case of orbital SFT arising in a 62-year-old woman presenting with progressive swelling of the right upper eyelid and proptosis. The tumor had a benign clinical course, with radical surgical excision followed by regression of the clinical symptoms. We review the clinical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical features of the orbital SFT described so far, with particular emphasis on differential

Ellipsoid Smooth Muscle Tumor of the Lower Eyelid: An Exploration of Its Possible Origin.

Ocular adnexal smooth muscle masses/neoplasms are extremely rare. Such lesions are comparatively more common in the conjunctiva than in the orbit and are most unusual in the eyelid. A 58-year-old woman slowly developed over 4 months a firm, movable sausage-shaped lesion in the deep lateral half of the right lower eyelid. The lesion ran parallel to and above the orbital rim. At surgery, the lesion was located between the orbicularis muscle and the inferior orbital septum. The term ellipsoid is used descriptively and does not imply any particular biologic behavior. Immunohistochemical evaluation

A rare case of congenital piloleiomyoma of the eyelid.

Cutaneous leiomyoma is an infrequently occurring benign smooth muscle neoplasm of skin. Piloleiomyoma, angioleiomyoma, and genital leiomyoma are the three forms of the cutaneous leiomyoma. Piloleiomyoma arises from arrector pili muscle and is commonly seen in the adult population. Congenital piloleiomyoma is extremely rare and has never been reported to arise from the eyelid. We report a case of a neonate presenting with upper eyelid mass lesion since birth causing mechanical ptosis. Incisional biopsy followed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry established the diagnosis of piloleiomyom

Preoperative brush and impression cytology in ocular surface squamous neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: Preoperative cytologic diagnoses of ocular surface squamous neoplasms were evaluated and compared with histologic diagnoses. STUDY DESIGN: Impression cytology (Millipore filter paper) and brush cytology were applied to 32 patients who had conjunctival neoplasms. Papanicolaou-stained cytologic preparations and hematoxylin and eosin-stained histologic sections were examined by light microscopy. RESULTS: The brush technique was used on 27 patients; impression cytology was applied in 5 cases. Cytologic and histologic diagnoses were concordant in 26 cases. Squamous cell carcinoma or ca

[Ocular pathology in AIDS and related syndromes].

AIDS is characterised by the onset of opportunistic infections and/or neoplasms usually of the lungs, digestive tract and CNS. Eye involvement is less common but takes the form of Kaposi's sarcoma on the eyelids and conjunctiva and retinitis that may be aspecific or caused by CMV or T gondii. Treatment with Interferon, and sequential antifolic and antiviral drugs is effective but the prognosis for the underlying disease remains poor.

Ocular squamous cell carcinoma in cattle: clinicopathological and prognostic considerations.

Ocular and periocular neoplasms in cattle are of great clinical and economic significance, with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) being the most prevalent. The aim of this study was to analyze the occurrence of neoplasms in these regions in cattle from the Agreste region of Pernambuco by evaluating 45 cases (25 retrospective and 20 prospective), including clinical, epidemiological, and morphological data. SCC was the most frequent tumor (n = 43), with one case of papilloma also observed. In addition, one ocular dermoid, a non-neoplastic lesion, was identified. SCC was mainly located in the third e

Recurrent Eyelid Ptosis as an Atypical Manifestation of Conjunctival Lymphoma.

A 67-year-old woman with a history of thyroid and ovarian cancer presented with recurrent right upper eyelid ptosis after 3 blepharoplasties. Slit-lamp exam revealed a superior subtarsal and subconjunctival lesion (25×15 mm). MRI showed eyelid and conjunctival involvement extending into the extraconal orbital space, lacrimal gland, and superior rectus muscle. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed extranodal marginal zone MALT lymphoma. She received 4 cycles of systemic R-CHOP immunochemotherapy, achieving complete lesion remission, though ptosis persisted. She remains under surveil

Neuroendocrine tumour metastasis to the orbit.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms are tumours that usually arise in the gastrointestinal tract and the bronchopulmonary system. The orbit is a rare anatomical site for their metastases. In the following article we present a case report of a 73-year-old man who was admitted to the Ophthalmology Department because of eye pain and high intraocular pressure in the right eye. There was also eye motility restriction, diplopia, oedema of the eyelid, and subconjunctival haemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumour in the right orbit, probably arising from the inferior rectus muscle. The patient wa

Syringocystadenocarcinoma Papilliferum of the Eyelid: A Rare Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Syringocystadenocarcinoma papilliferum is an exceptionally rare malignant adnexal neoplasm of sweat gland origin, with fewer than 90 cases reported in the literature, most arising within the head and neck region. Periocular involvement is exceedingly uncommon, with only 3 previously documented cases, one of which was confined to the eyelid. The authors describe an 80-year-old man who presented with new onset erythema, irritation, and growth of a long-standing upper eyelid lesion. Incisional biopsy was interpreted as squamous cell carcinoma with papillary morphology. Subsequent excision and his

Radiotherapy in lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the skin: review of the literature and report of a recurrent and metastatic case.

Primary lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the skin (LELCS) is a very rare cutaneous neoplasm. Only about 70 cases have been documented in the literature. There are no prospective data regarding treatment methods. Surgical excision is sufficient therapy in the majority of cases. Radiation therapy is sometimes used in case of recurrence or positive margins after surgery. The metastatic potential of LELCS is extremely low and only five previously documented cases of lymph node spread have been reported. We present the case of an 80-year-old male with a tumor primarily located on the lower eyeli

Virilizing ovarian stromal tumor in a young woman with Carney complex.

A woman with Carney complex presented at the age of 22 years with abdominal pain and hirsutism. As a baby, she had undergone excision of a right eyelid lesion, and at age 14 years she had undergone removal of a left lower eyelid nodule that subsequently recurred. Investigation revealed an elevated level of serum testosterone and a 2-cm left ovarian tumor. A left salpingo-oophorectomy was performed. Postoperatively, she experienced relief from abdominal pain, the serum level of testosterone normalized, and the hirsutism ameliorated. The tumor featured sheets of eosinophilic cells with lipochrom

Electrochemotherapy treatment for bilateral pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma in a cat.

A 13-year-old male neutered cat was presented for the sudden growth of two nodular lesions close to the upper eyelid of both eyes. Fine-needle aspiration cytology was suggestive of mesenchymal neoplasia. The cat had conservative surgical excision in order to preserve the eyelids' functionality; however, the histopathological report came with a diagnosis of incompletely excised bilateral pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma. Due to the local aggressiveness of this neoplasm, the cat was treated with two sessions of cisplatin-based electrochemotherapy, delivered 14 days apart. Systemic or local toxicitie

Unusual case of primary cutaneous signet-ring cell (histocytoid) carcinoma.

Signet-ring cell (histocytoid) carcinoma is a rare and aggressive skin neoplasm that most commonly affects elderly men. It typically originates from the upper or lower eyelid, with bilateral involvement only in rare cases, and results in a diffuse and infiltrative appearance clinically, radiologically, and histologically (the "monocle" sign). It is essential to carry out a full investigation to rule out metastasis from an internal origin.
