A case of progressive crossed hemiatrophy mistaken as panniculitis.

Progressive crossed hemiatrophy is an extremely rare clinical type of facial hemiatrophy that presents primarily as unilateral facial atrophy and contralateral trunk or limb involvement. The undistinguishable clinical manifestation and pathological changes complicate diagnosis, especially at the onset of the disease when presenting with less clinical evidence. Here, we report a case of a 9-year-old boy started with left scalp induration, following with subcutaneous tissues atrophy on the right trunk. He was mistaken as panniculitis based on the pathologic findings and treated with topical tacr

Adult Presentation of Dyke-Davidoff-Masson Syndrome: A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome (DDMS) is a rare disease which is clinically characterized by hemiparesis, seizures, facial asymmetry, and mental retardation. The classical radiological findings are cerebral hemiatrophy, calvarial thickening, and hyperpneumatization of the frontal sinuses. This disease is a rare entity, and it mainly presents in childhood. Adult presentation of DDMS is unusual and has been rarely reported in the medical literature. KEY MESSAGES: DDMS is a rare disease of childhood. However, it should be kept in mind as a diagnostic possibility in an adult who presen

Ocular motor dysfunction in Parry-Romberg syndrome: four cases.

The authors describe four patients with Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) who had abnormal eye movements, ptosis, and facial hemiatrophy. There were delays in diagnosis in all cases, often requiring multiple imaging studies, prior to diagnosis of PRS. These cases demonstrate the variable ophthalmic manifestations of PRS, which can lead to difficulty in diagnosis. Case 1 was a 23-year-old woman with lateral rectus paresis who presented with horizontal diplopia and developed ptosis and facial hemiatrophy. Case 2 was a 28-year-old woman with medial rectus weakness adjusted to diplopia by head turn and

A case of extensive left-sided facial atrophy of Romberg.

Progressive facial atrophy or Parry-Romberg syndrome is characterized by slowly progressive facial atrophy involving skin, subcutaneous tissue, cartilage and bony structures. Apart from facial atrophy, it can be associated with diverse clinical manifestations including headache, partial seizures, trigeminal neuralgia, cerebral hemiatrophy and ocular abnormalities. The exact etiology is unknown although sympathetic system dysfunction, autoimmune disorders, focal scleroderma, trauma and genetic factors have been postulated. We hereby report a patient having marked left-sided facial atrophy and w

[Principal features of the pathogenesis and pathogenetic treatment of certain neurologic syndromes of the facial region].

Results of many-year studies and literary data on the clinical course, pathogenesis and pathogenetic therapy of motor, sensor, and vegetotrophic disturbances in the facial region are reviewed. A concept is substantiated, that neuralgia of the trigeminal, glossopharyngeal and vagal nerves, secondary contracture of the mimic muscles, and facial hemiatrophy are diseases with a specific pathogenesis having no analogy with pain, motor, and trophic disturbances in other parts of the body. This is reflected in the special methods of the pathogenetic therapy of the diseases.

Hemihypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis for facial nerve palsy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Commonly used classic hypoglossal (CN XII) to facial nerve (CN VII) anastomosis has the disadvantage of tongue hemiatrophy. Thus, various attempts have been made to modify this method to reduce the tongue damage. The aim of this report was to present the results of hemihypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis (HHFA) technique in relation to facial muscles reanimation and hemitongue atrophy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The first 7 consecutive patients who underwent CN VII anastomosis with half of the CNXII, for which the follow-up period exceeded 12 months, were analysed. During

Parry-Romberg Syndrome Associated with Localized Scleroderma.

Parry-Romberg syndrome is a rare neurocutaneous disorder of unknown origin. It is characterized by progressive facial hemiatrophy and frequently overlaps with a condition known as linear scleroderma 'en coup de sabre'. Neurological involvement is frequently described in these patients, including migraine, facial pain and epilepsy, which represent the commonest neurological conditions, sometimes associated with brain abnormalities ipsilaterally to the skin lesions. We present a case of Parry-Romberg syndrome with neurological involvement in a patient with diagnosed localized scleroderma (morphe

Ocular manifestations and treatment progress of Parry-Romberg syndrome.

PURPOSES: Parry-Romberg syndrome is a rare degenerative disease. This article focuses on the ocular aspects of Parry-Romberg syndrome to help diagnose and further explore more effective treatments. METHODS: A combined systematic search of PubMed electronic database by using Boolean operators AND and OR was conducted, choosing the following keywords: "Parry-Romberg syndrome", "Progressive hemifacial atrophy", "eye", "oculus", "ophthalmic", "ophthalmologic", "ophthalmology" and "global", etc. After the initial screening of these articles, repetitive literatures were excluded. RESULTS: 69 artic

Pseudo oculomotor palsy associated with Parry-Romberg syndrome.

Parry-Romberg syndrome is a rare form of localized scleroderma that can affect deep tissues, including muscles and the central nervous system. Early and appropriate treatment during the inflammatory phase is essential to prevent serious sequelae. We present the case of an 11-year-old patient whose first manifestation was a palpebral hypochromia, followed by pseudo paralysis of the third cranial nerve with ptosis and hypotropia, whose late diagnosis delayed the start of treatment and conditioned an unfavorable evolution. This work emphasizes the significance of early diagnosis in enhancing prog

[Ocular involvement in Parry-Romberg syndrome].

Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) is a rare degenerative disease of unknown etiology, characterized by slow progressive hemifacial atrophy of the soft tissues (subcutaneous fat, muscles), cartilage and bones. Beside hemifacial atrophy, various ophthalmic and periocular manifestations of PRS has been described. Progressive enophthalmos and eyelid changes are only some of many other symptoms, as the disease can affect all layers of the eyeball. This article reviews literature on ophthalmic manifestations of PRS and reports our own case and treatment approach for a patient with this pathology.

Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome: case report of fetal unilateral ventriculomegaly and hypoplastic left middle cerebral artery.

Prenatal ultrasonographic detection of unilateral cerebral ventriculomegaly arises suspicion of pathological condition related to cerebrospinal fluid flow obstruction or cerebral parenchimal pathology. Dyke-Davidoff-Masson syndrome is a rare condition characterized by cerebral hemiatrophy, calvarial thickening, skull and facial asymmetry, contralateral hemiparesis, cognitive impairment and seizures. Congenital and acquired types are recognized and have been described, mainly in late childhood, adolescence and adult ages. We describe a female infant with prenatal diagnosis of unilateral left ve

Hemifacial atrophy.

We report the case of a 44-year-old woman with a one-year history of en coup de sabre morphea and progressive hemifacial atrophy with ipsilateral hemifacial neuralgia, migraine, and contralateral neurologic abnormalities. While rare, Parry-Romberg syndrome typically presents in the first or second decade of life; this patient's case is unusual in that the onset of her disease is demonstrated at age 43. Common clinical features, laboratory findings, and pathogenetic theories are discussed.
