Associated anomalies in asymmetric crying facies and 22q11 deletion.

Congenital asymmetric crying facies, a minor congenital anomaly due to unilateral absence or hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle, is associated at times with major congenital anomalies. A large number of asymmetric crying facies cases with chromosome 22q11 microdeletions have presently been reported. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis for 22q11 deletion was performed on 8 infants with asymmetric crying facies. Five of our patients had at least one associated systemic anomaly. Two of 5 patients had conotruncal heart disease (Cayler cardiofacial syndrome). In three of

[Asymmetric crying facies syndrome: report of 16 clinical cases].

The Asymmetric Crying Facies (ACF) is included among the congenital facial palsy in childhood. We report the clinical characteristics, congenital anomalies and other associated disorders in sixteen patients with ACF examined from 1984 to 1995 in the pediatric units of the Hospital Adolfo Pons, Universitario and Clínico of Maracaibo, Venezuela. Statistically the side of lesion and the sex were independent. In seven of sixteen patients (43.75%) we found congenital anomalies and/or neurological disorders, being diaphragmatic hernia and the hyperkinesia a rare association no reported up to now in

Femoral hypoplasia--unusual facies syndrome and chromosome X trisomy.

A black American infant presented with typical findings of femoral hypoplasia--unusual facies syndrome, chromosome X trisomy in cultured lymphocytes, and a family history of mirognathia among first- and second-degree maternal relatives. It is postulated that micrognathia may lie at one end of the multigenic phenotypic spectrum which at its opposite end includes the above syndrome. The presence of X trisomy in this infant suggests that concordance between this chromosomal anomaly and variable points of the syndrome's phenotypic spectrum should be sought in other families.

[Williams-Beuren facies with mental retardation and tetralogy of Fallot].

The "elfin facies", described by Williams and Beuren, is usually associated, beside mental retardation, with a supravalvular aortic stenosis and, more broadly, with multiple arterial stenoses. Other types of cardiac defects were described in this context, but the case reported by the authors is the first one with a tetralogy of Fallot. The hypothesis of widerspread histodysplastic lesions is discussed: the process may be early enough to alter the morphogenesis of the cardiac conus and to produce, more lately, the classical stenotic lesions of the arterial wall.

A 'new' syndrome of mental retardation with characteristic facies and brachyphalangy.

This paper describes 6 individuals, occurring in 3 generations of a single family, who were affected by a distinct syndrome which included: retardation and microcephaly; a small oval face with almond-shaped eyes, droopy eyelids, a small nose, and small downturned mouth; minor acral skeletal anomalies, and short stature. Craniosynostosis, heart defects, and limited elbow extension were seen less frequently. Expression was variable and parents who were in the direct vertical line of transmission of the syndrome showed few, if any, overt signs of the disease. However, the metacarpal/phalangeal pr

Leonine facies and hoarseness in disseminated histoplasmosis: A diagnostic pitfall.

A 56-year old immuno-competent male from a non-endemic region in India presented with progressive weight loss, hoarseness of voice and widespread cutaneous lesions, including leonine facies, genital nodules and diffuse scaling. Magnetic resonance imaging of the neck revealed oedematous thickening of the false vocal cords, epiglottis and aryepiglottic folds, suggesting laryngeal involvement. All routine investigations were normal. Urine Histoplasma antigen levels were markedly elevated. Skin biopsy revealed granulomatous inflammation with intracellular yeast-like organisms, and polymerase chain

Facies: the value of an old diagnostic tip in pediatric dermatology.

The authors examine what is meant as facies in medicine. After an introduction to the word's understanding, they move on listing some dermatological conditions associated to peculiar facies in the child. Starting from atopic dermatitis, the authors develop an algorithm including Genodermatoses, Neurocutaneous Disorders, and Multiple Congenital Anomalies Syndromes. They emphasize the distinctive features of the lesions on the face and their fundamental diagnostic importance.

Diagnosis of femoral hypoplasia-unusual facies syndrome in the fetus.

Femoral hypoplasia-unusual facies syndrome (FHUFS) is a rare condition characterized by a variable degree of unilateral or bilateral femoral hypoplasia associated with facial clefting and other minor malformations. The prenatal diagnosis of this condition is possible, but so far has been reported prospectively in only two cases. We review all cases of FHUFS reported in the literature and also describe three cases detected prenatally in the mid-trimester, underlining the variable expression of the syndrome. The reported association with maternal diabetes mellitus and differential diagnosis with

Aortic anomalies in an adolescent with the Williams' elfin facies syndrome.

An adolescent with classical Williams' syndrome who presented with hypertensive encephalopathy is described. He had the unusual combination of supravalvular aortic stenosis, long segment coarctation of the aorta, aortic hypoplasia and a high bifurcation of the abdominal aorta. Surgical resection of the coarctation was required; however, the patient has remained moderately hypertensive. The aortic anomalies in this syndrome are reviewed and their frequency and importance examined.

Gingival Fibromatosis with Distinctive Facies - A Three Generation Case Report.

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare disorder characterized by progressive and varying degrees of gingival overgrowth. Oral manifestations may vary from minimal involvement of only tuberosity area and the buccal gingiva around the lower molars to a generalized gingival enlargement. It can occur as an isolated disorder but can be one feature of a syndrome. Although the clinical and histopathological characteristics of HGF are well known and described, the pathogenic mechanism remains unknown. The goal of this article is to describe a family with three generations afflicted with a sy

Femoral hypoplasia-unusual facies syndrome in a black African infant.

The femoral hypoplasia-unusual facies syndrome is a very rare association of femora and facial abnormalities. The most common features include hypoplasia of the femora and a characteristic facies with a short nose, long philtrum, thin upper lip and micrognathia. Maternal diabetes mellitus has been mainly identified as the causal agent. We reported the first case in a black African and discuss prenatal diagnosis and aetiology.

An unusual cutaneous T cell lymphoma presenting as leonine facies.

We report an unusual case of a cutaneous T cell lymphoma with the clinical picture of leonine facies as the only skin symptom appearing during the first years of the disease. Small atypical lymphocytes with partly pleomorphic, partly indented cerebriform nuclei are present in the facial skin as well as in the peripheral blood and in the bone marrow. The lymphoma shows an indolent clinical behaviour without rapid progression of the disease. It shares features with both pleomorphic small/medium-sized T cell lymphoma and mycosis fungoides, but cannot be classified according to the criteria of the

Femoral hypoplasia-unusual facies syndrome in infants of diabetic mothers.

Three children with the femoral hypoplasia-unusual facies syndrome are described. Two had the characteristic facial pattern of upslanted palpebral fissures, long philtrum with thin upper lip, micrognathia, and hypoplastic alae nasi. The other, an infant girl who died within 24 hours after birth, had a cleft lip, which distorted some of the other features. She also had a cleft palate, as did one of the two older boys. All three children had ear defects, upper limb involvement, and rib, vertebral, lower extremity, and genitourinary tract abnormalities. The infant girl died of lung hypoplasia ass

Latrodectus Facies After Latrodectus Hesperus Envenomation in a Pediatric Patient.

BACKGROUND: Black widow spider (Latrodectus spp) envenomation represents the most medically significant spider envenomation in the United States, prompting more than 2500 calls to poison centers annually. The female spider, which is responsible for symptomatic envenomations, is classically described as a shiny black spider with a red hourglass-shaped marking on the ventral abdomen. Clinical features of envenomation include painful muscle cramping, abdominal pain, and autonomic disturbances, such as tachycardia, hypertension, and diaphoresis. "Latrodectus facies" or "facies latrodectismica" is
