Acquired Factor XIII Deficiency in a 19-year-Old Male Following Ballistic Injury.

Factor XIII deficiency is a rare cause of post-operative bleeding. It poses a diagnostic challenge as standard coagulation tests including prothrombin time, international normalized ratio, and activated partial thromboplastin time are usually normal in factor XIII deficiency. We present the case of our patient, a 19-year-old male with acquired factor XIII deficiency diagnosed after ballistic injury with a post-operative course complicated by hemorrhage. This case demonstrates an uncommon cause of coagulopathy, acquired factor XIII deficiency, and the challenges it poses to post-operative manag

Use of Catridecacog in a patient with severe Factor XIII deficiency undergoing surgery.

Despite many articles regarding the antihemorrhagic treatment and prophylaxis, there is a lack of experience about how to best conduct major surgical procedures in patients with congenital factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency. Here we report a case of surgery (right inguinal hernia, complicated by heaviness and pain) performed in a patient with FXIII deficiency, receiving recombinant FXIII prophylaxis (Catridecacog 35 UI/kg every 28±2 days). Our experience shows that Catridecacog can be used safely and effectively not only for continued prophylaxis but also in surgery and adds to the very limited bo

[3 operated cases of congenital deficiency of Factor XIII associated with intracranial hematomas].

Three operated cases of congenital deficiency of factor XIII (fibrin-stabilizing factor) associated with intracranial hematomas were described and the diagnosis, replacement therapy of the factor were discussed. Congenital deficiency of factor XIII is quite rare coagulation disorder and only 100 patients were reported in the literatures in which we could find only one case who had craniotomy for associated intracranial hemorrhage. Case 1: A 41-year-old female with the history of unknown hemorrhagic diathesis complained of headache and right hemiparesis on August 2, 1980. CT scan showed left pa

Acquired factor XIII deficiency is associated with mortality and is not linked to hypocalcemia.

BACKGROUND: We have previously shown that factor XIII (FXIII) levels should be above 30% in an acute care setting. The aim of this analysis was to assess morbidity and mortality in a larger sample of patients with acquired FXIII deficiency, and to explore the potential underlying causes of acquired FXIII deficiency. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all patients diagnosed with acquired factor XIII deficiency at a large hospital over a period of 24 months (study ID: NCT04416594; http://www.clinicaltrials.gov ). We then assessed standardized clinical and outcome dat

Acquired factor XIII deficiency in adult patients during ECMO: a prospective observational study.

Data on factor XIII (FXIII) activity in patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are scarce. In this prospective, observational, single-centre study, we determined the rate of acquired FXIII deficiency in 44 adults during ECMO. We evaluated the relationship between minimum FXIII activity, haemoglobin levels, transfusion requirements, as well as the occurrence of major bleeding events. Descriptive statistical methods, bivariate correlation and receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were applied. Acquired FXIII deficiency (FXIII activity < 70%) was found in 41/44 patients

Molecular diagnosis of factor XIII deficiency, data from comprehensive coagulation laboratory in Iran.

: Diagnosis of factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency (FXIIID) as a rare bleeding disorder is a challenge worldwide. Thus, in the present study, we used different methods including two molecular methods for detection of FXIIID. This study was conducted on individuals suspected to FXIIID. All individuals were checked by two routinely used methods of clot solubility test in Iran and two other clot solubility tests as well as FXIII activity and antigen assays. Molecular analysis was performed by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation sys

Combined occurrence of von Willebrand's disease and factor XIII deficiency: a case report.

We report the case of a three year old female child with combined occurrence of von Willebrand's disease and factor XIII deficiency, an extremely rare combination. The patient presented with prolonged bleeding following cuts and wounds. Clot solubility test using 5M urea was positive. Platelet aggregation using ristocetin was reduced, which corrected on adding normal plasma. Aggregation with other agonists was normal. We discuss the clinico- hematological profile of the case. Only one such case has been reported in literature in the past to the best of our knowledge.

Causative alleles for chondrodysplastic dwarfism, factor XI deficiency, and factor XIII deficiency in the Kumamoto sub-breed of Japanese Brown cattle.

Japanese Brown cattle are the second most popular Wagyu breed, and the Kumamoto sub-breed shows better daily gain and carcass weight. One of the breeding objectives for this sub-breed is to reduce genetic defects. Chondrodysplastic dwarfism and factor VIII deficiency have been identified as genetic diseases in the Kumamoto sub-breed. Previously, we detected individuals in the Kumamoto sub-breed with causative alleles of genetic diseases identified in Japanese Black cattle. In the current study, 11 mutations responsible for genetic diseases in the Wagyu breeds were analyzed to evaluate the risk

The impact of acquired coagulation factor XIII deficiency in traumatic bleeding and wound healing.

Factor XIII (FXIII) is a protein involved in blood clot stabilisation which also plays an important role in processes including trauma, wound healing, tissue repair, pregnancy, and even bone metabolism. Following surgery, low FXIII levels have been observed in patients with peri-operative blood loss and FXIII administration in those patients was associated with reduced blood transfusions. Furthermore, in patients with low FXIII levels, FXIII supplementation reduced the incidence of post-operative complications including disturbed wound healing. Increasing awareness of potentially low FXIII lev

Acquired factor XIII deficiency in patients under therapeutic plasma exchange: A poorly explored etiology.

INTRODUCTION: Factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency may cause bleeding under certain clinical circumstances. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) may lead to a transient deficiency. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical evolution of patients with acquired FXIII deficiency secondary to TPE. METHODS: We respectively studied a cohort of consecutive patients from 2014 to 2019 who were treated with TPE with FXIII levels <50%. The FXIII was measured after the start of the TPE course, on days between the TPE sessions, due to suspected acquired deficiency. All TPE were performed using continuous flow cell sepa

Congenital blood coagulation factor XIII deficiency and successful deliveries: a review of the literature.

Congenital deficiency of blood coagulation factor XIII is an uncommon, inherited disorder characterized by hemorrhagic diathesis, habitual abortions and defective wound healing. We analyzed 8 reported successful pregnancies in women with a congenital deficiency of A-subunit of factor XIII (XIIIA), in which the plasma level of maternal factor XIIIA and/or the precise replacement therapies are described. Because decidual bleeding usually begins from 5 to 6 weeks' gestation and, without replacement therapy, spontaneous abortion always occurs, we herein offer the following prenatal and peripartum

A Rare Case of Congenital Factor XIII Deficiency Secondary to Hyperconsumption: A Case Report.

Acquired Factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency is a rare condition often associated with underlying medical conditions or medications. We present a case of a 23-year-old male, who presented with prolonged bleeding from a traumatic ulcer site on his left leg. Initial laboratory investigations revealed a severe deficiency in FXIII activity (30%) and antigen levels (25%), with no evidence of congenital disorders or other underlying pathologies. Further evaluation indicated a pattern of hyperconsumption due to ongoing bleeding episodes in the form of excessive use of clotting factors due to repeated blee

A novel F13A1 gene mutation (Arg208Pro) in a Chinese patient with factor XIII deficiency.

The objective of the study was to analyse a novel F13A1 gene mutation in a Chinese patient with factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency and explore the molecular mechanism. Pedigree investigation, clinical diagnosis, phenotypic and genetic analysis were conducted. The F13A1 gene was amplified by PCR and directly sequenced. Online bioinformatics software was needed to analyse the mutation. A novel mutation c.515G>C (p.Arg208Pro) in exon 4 was found in the proband. Protein Arg208 is conserved highly among homologous species. Bioinformatics software showed that Arg208Pro mutation might affect the protein

Factor XIII deficiency as a potential cause of supratentorial haemorrhage after posterior fossa surgery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative intracranial haemorrhage can be a dramatic event, carrying significant morbidity and mortality. Bleeding at sites remote from the operation area represents a small percentage of haemorrhages whose aetiology remains unclear (Harders et al. Acta Neurochir (Wien) 74(1-2):57-60, 1985). AIM: We present the case of a 60-year-old patient who underwent posterior fossa craniotomy for the removal of a space-occupying lesion and suffered supratentorial haemorrhage soon after the operation. RESULTS: A thorough postoperative investigation revealed low levels of factor XIII (FXII

Congenital deficiency of factor XIII caused by two missense mutations in a Dutch family.

We present the clinical, biochemical and genomic findings of a family with congenital factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency. Congenital FXIII deficiency is a very rare autosomal recessive bleeding disorder, characterized by umbilical cord bleeding at birth and spontaneous intracranial haemorrhage. Routine clotting tests are normal, which may delay the diagnosis, leading to an increased chance of severe sequelae. The propositus and her brother, known with haemorrhagic diathesis, were found to be compound heterozygous with a known missense mutation (1050 G --> T transversion in exon 7, Val316Phe substi
