Platygastrine wasps (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) are parasitoids of gall midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). They and their hosts are exceptionally abundant and speciose, with great relevance to agriculture and biodiversity research. Both groups are also "dark taxa," whose species identification and ecological associations are obscured by a history of taxonomic confusion and neglect. Verified host records are few in number and limited in scope. In order to understand host specialization, more records are needed. However, rearing Cecidomyiidae is challenging, as many species require living host t

Atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD) is the driving force for plant transpiration. Plants have different strategies to respond to this 'atmospheric drought'. Deposited aerosols on leaf surfaces can interact with plant water relations and may influence VPD response. We studied transpiration and water use efficiency of pine, beech and sunflower by measuring sap flow, gas exchange and carbon isotopes, thereby addressing different time scales of plant/atmosphere interaction. Plants were grown (i) outdoors under rainfall exclusion (OD) and in ventilated greenhouses with (ii) ambient air (AA) o

In developed countries, changes in agriculture practices have greatly accelerated the degradation of the landscape and the functioning of adjacent aquatic ecosystems. Such alteration can in turn impair the services provided by aquatic ecosystems, namely the decomposition of organic matter, a key process in most small streams. To study this alteration, we recorded three measures of heterotrophic activity corresponding to microbial hydrolasic activity (FDA hydrolysis) and leaf litter breakdown rates with (k(c)) and without invertebrates (k(f)) along a gradient of contrasted agricultural pressure

The effects of industrial pollution on allelic and genotypic structures of Norway spruce. European silver fir and European beech were investigated by means of isozyme analysis. In a mixed Norway spruce-silver fir forest stand in an area heavily polluted by sulphur dioxide and heavy metals in the region of Spis (eastern Slovakia), pairs of neighbouring damaged and apparently healthy trees were selected in two replicates (44 and 69 pairs in a heavily and moderately damaged stand, respectively). Pairwise sampling of trees with contrasting vitality was applied to reduce potential effects of site h

Geosmithia species (Hypocreales, Ascomycota) are associates of bark beetles and other arthropods. One species, Geosmithia morbida, is a virulent tree pathogen of Juglans nigra. To date, 10 Geosmithia spp. from conifer-infesting, and at least 23 species from hardwood associated bark beetles have been reported from Europe. The aim of this study was to survey Geosmithia spp. associated with 18 bark and ambrosia beetle species in hardwood ecosystems in Poland. In addition, we evaluated the pathogenicity of the six Geosmithia species by inoculating Acer, Fagus, Quercus, Tilia and Ulmus seedlings. O

Coastal forests are retreating due to sea‑level rise and extreme precipitation events, yet the physiological mechanisms that precede woody plant decline remain poorly constrained. We used the ecosystem‑scale TEMPEST (Terrestrial Ecosystem Manipulation to Probe the Effects of Storm Treatments) experiment; annual, plot‑level freshwater and saltwater flooding of a mid‑Atlantic deciduous forest, to quantify short‑ and long‑term responses of sap flux in three tree species: Acer rubrum, Fagus grandifolia, and Liriodendron tulipifera. We analyzed five years of sap flux density measurements (2021-2025

The increasing frequency of air temperature extremes and short-term fluctuations poses a significant threat to the physiological functioning of temperate forests across Europe. However, the mechanisms by which these fluctuations induce stress and impair the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) in tall tree canopies remain poorly understood. Moreover, the impact of air temperature extremes and fluctuations on ecosystem carbon fluxes remains poorly quantified. Here, we integrated real-time chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) and eddy covariance carbon flux measurements in a temperate mi

In a montane beech (Fagus sylvatica) forest the influence of the climatic factors, light and temperature, on net photosynthesis and on the CO2 balance of the ground vegetation was investigated. The total turnover of carbon was calculated. Species studied included: Athyrium filix-femina, Oxalis acetosella, Luzula luzuloides, Deschampsia flexuosa and young plants of Fagus sylvatica. 1. The light compensation point in all spp. is between 300 and 500 lux except for D. flexuosa where it is 2 klx. Light saturation is attained at 2-3 klx for A. filix-femina, at 5-6 klx for O. acetosella, and at 6-7 k

Phosphorus (P) is one of the most important macronutrients limiting plant growth and development, particularly in forest ecosystems such as temperate beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests in Central Europe. Efficient tree internal P cycling during annual growth is an important strategy of beech trees to adapt to low soil-P. Organic P (Porg) is thought to play a decisive role in P cycling, but the significance of individual compounds and processes has not been elucidated. To identify processes and metabolites involved in P cycling of beech trees, polar-metabolome and lipidome profiling was performed

The biological effect of exposure to wood dust depends on its composition and the content of microorganisms which are an inherent element of the dust. The irritant and allergic effects of wood dust have been recognised for a long time. The allergic effect is caused by the wood dust of subtropical trees, e.g. western red cedar (Thuja plicata), redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), obeche (Triplochiton scleroxylon), cocabolla (Dalbergia retusa) and others. Trees growing in the European climate such as: larch (Larix), walnut (Juglans regia), oak (Quercus), beech (Fagus), pine (Pinus) cause a little les

Ulleungdo Island harbors several endemic plant lineages commonly interpreted as products of anagenetic speciation following long-distance colonization. Yet plastome phylogenies represent a single organellar genealogy and may conflict with nuclear genomic structure, morphology, or taxonomic boundaries. This critical mini-review evaluates whether plastid-based hypotheses for the origin and diversification of Ulleungdo endemics are supported by independent molecular and phenotypic evidence. We synthesize findings from comparative plastomics, chloroplast haplotype and network analyses, nuclear mic

BACKGROUND: To predict the risk of tick-borne disease, it is critical to understand the ecological factors that determine the abundance of ticks. In Europe, the sheep tick (Ixodes ricinus) transmits a number of important diseases including Lyme borreliosis. The aim of this long-term study was to determine the abiotic and biotic factors driving the annual abundance of I. ricinus at a location in Switzerland where Lyme borreliosis is endemic.
METHODS: Over a 15-year period (2004 to 2018), we monitored the abundance of I. ricinus ticks on a monthly basis at three different elevations on Chaumont

The forecast of human tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) incidence for the next years has been on the research agenda of epidemiologists since the discovery of this tick-borne zoonosis. Based on models to explain the trend as well as the low- and high-frequency oscillations in the Austrian TBE incidence series, TBE forecasts for Austria, Germany and Switzerland are presented here. For this purpose, generalized linear models (GLMs) of type negative binomial regression were calibrated with the TBE incidences of the period 1991-2018 to forecast the TBE incidences 2019 and 2020. The GLMs require only 4

The temperate climax tree species Fagus sylvatica and the floodplain tree species Populus × canescens possess contrasting phosphorus (P) nutrition strategies. While F. sylvatica has been documented to display P storage and mobilization (Netzer et al., 2017), this was not observed for Populus × canescens (Netzer et al., 2018b). Nevertheless, changes in the abundance of organic bound P in gray poplar trees indicated adaptation of the P nutrition to different needs during annual growth. The present study aimed at characterizing seasonal changes in metabolite and lipid abundances in gray poplar an

Understanding how species abundances are driven by biotic interactions along environmental gradients is a fundamental ecological question. In Central European forests, a classical theory by Ellenberg predicts that beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) outcompetes other tree species within a mesic range of soil pH and water levels, while other species prevail under less favorable conditions. While the theory is generally accepted in ecology, only certain aspects of it have been substantiated by empirical evidence. Moreover, the demographic drivers of the turnover from beech to other tree species along the

European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) and Silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) were exposed to low concentrations of ozone (O(3)) and sulfur dioxide (SO(2)), alone and combined, and simulated acid rain (pH 4.0) in sheltered open-top chambers in Hohenheim (Southwest Germany) for almost five years. The concentrations of O(3) and SO(2) used were related to annual ambient average found in southern West Germany. Two control chambers were ventilated with charcoal filtered air and rainfall was simulated at pH 4.0 and 5.0. Because of large dense plant growth in the chambe

Wood-inhabiting fungal (WIF) communities are strongly structured by host tree species and environmental gradients. However, how WIF communities are structured among deadwood substrates when such drivers are minimized remains less clear, as do the implications for eDNA-based monitoring. We addressed these questions in a mono-dominant and unmanaged old Beech (Fagus sylvatica) forest, using long-read community profiling. Sampling followed a cross-fraction, tree-linked design that linked four deadwood substrate types to their source tree: logs, snags, attached fine woody debris (aFWD), and fallen

Wild-growing medicinal plants are a rich source of bioactive compounds, which serve as antimicrobial agents for various medicinal, pharmaceutical, and wood preservation uses. In this study, branches and leaves from Nicotiana glauca Graham, a wild plant from Egypt, were used to extract bioactive compounds using the ethanol solvent. The ethanol extracts (EEs) were analyzed for their chemical components using HPLC and GC-MS. The EEs were applied to Fagus sylvatica L. wood to evaluate their activity against the growth of three fungi, namely Phoma glomerata, Fusarium circinatum, and Pythium tardicr

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Global warming is shortening winters in temperate ecosystems, limiting cold stratification for seeds with physiological dormancy (PD). The consequences of incomplete dormancy release can cascade beyond germination, potentially affecting fitness in subsequent life-stages, yet this remains understudied in trees. Here we assess the effects of insufficient stratification on germination, leaf emergence and seedling performance in three broad-range temperate tree species. We further evaluate how reduced cold stratification under climate change may drive shifts in these traits ac

While changes in spring phenological events due to global warming have been widely documented, changes in autumn phenology, and therefore in growing season length, are less studied and poorly understood. However, it may be helpful to assess the potential lengthening of the growing season under climate warming in order to determine its further impact on forest productivity and C balance. The present study aimed to: (1) characterise the sensitivity of leaf phenological events to temperature, and (2) quantify the relative contributions of leaf unfolding and senescence to the extension of canopy d
