Antiretrovirals and the use of traditional, complementary and alternative medicine by HIV patients in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa: a longitudinal study.

The aim of this prospective study (20 months) was to assess HIV patients' use of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (TCAM) and its effect on ARV adherence at three public hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Seven hundred and thirty-five (29.8% male and 70.2% female) patients who consecutively attended three HIV clinics completed assessments prior to ARV initiation, 519 after 6 months, 557 after 12 and 499 after 20 months on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Results indicate that following initiation of ARV therapy the use of herbal therapies for HIV declined significantly fr

Prevalence and determinants of complementary and alternative medicine use among infertile patients in Lebanon: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widely used for the treatment of infertility. While the Middle East and North Africa region has been shown to house one of the fastest growing markets of CAM products in the world, research describing the use of CAM therapies among Middle-Eastern infertile patients is minimal. The aim of this study is to examine the prevalence, characteristics and determinants of CAM use among infertile patients in Lebanon. METHODS: A cross sectional survey design was used to carry out face-to-face interviews with 213 consecutive patients attending t

Shattered Chains: Shedding Light on Child Sexual Abuse in the Black Community.

Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) remains deeply silenced in many Black communities, where cultural stigma, historical trauma, and systemic mistrust often discourage disclosure and limit access to supportive resources. These barriers contribute to delayed intervention, untreated trauma, and long-term psychological, emotional, and relational harms. This theoretical manuscript synthesizes interdisciplinary scholarship to examine CSA disclosure among Black children through three interconnected frameworks: Critical Race Theory, Attachment Theory, and Trauma-Informed Care, which illuminate how structural ra

The Role of Fear-Related Behaviors in the 2013-2016 West Africa Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak.

The 2013-2016 West Africa Ebola virus disease pandemic was the largest, longest, deadliest, and most geographically expansive outbreak in the 40-year interval since Ebola was first identified. Fear-related behaviors played an important role in shaping the outbreak. Fear-related behaviors are defined as "individual or collective behaviors and actions initiated in response to fear reactions that are triggered by a perceived threat or actual exposure to a potentially traumatizing event. FRBs modify the future risk of harm." This review examines how fear-related behaviors were implicated in (1) ac

Coping mechanisms for students with mental disorders: An exploratory qualitative study at Busitema University's Mbale and Busia Campuses.

In recent years, Ugandan universities have faced a rising incidence of mental health issues among students, with prevalence rates of mental disorders reaching up to 60% among undergraduates. These challenges significantly impact both academic performance and social interactions. This study aimed to investigate the coping mechanisms among students with mental disorders at Busitema University. We conducted 42 key informant interviews with students diagnosed with mental disorders, as determined by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Interviews were guided by a structured protocol d

Holy medicine: Patron saints of wounds due to animal bites.

The cult (system of religious beliefs and rituals) of saints in Western Europe appeared in the 3rd century CE and gained momentum from the 4th to the 6th centuries. Its importance for European society in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages was undeniable; holy medicine was the only hope for sick people because the number of physicians was insufficient, and usually physicians were helpless in the face of most of the ailments that plagued society at that time. The number of saints had increased over the years, and people sought medical help from them through prayer and other religious pract

Emerging in vitro models of corneal stromal fibrosis: Toward human-relevant platforms for anti-scarring therapeutics.

Corneal stromal fibrosis, characterized by the aberrant transformation of keratocytes into contractile, extracellular matrix-secreting myofibroblasts, is a major cause of irreversible visual impairment worldwide. Despite extensive studies in animal models, interspecies differences in immune regulation, stromal architecture, and wound healing limit their translational relevance. This review highlights recent advances in human-relevant in vitro models that aim to overcome these challenges. In vitro models increasingly mimic critical features of corneal stromal fibrosis, including keratocyte-myof

The Journey towards resilience following a traumatic birth: A grounded theory.

UNLABELLED: Statistics have shown that up to 30% of women experience birth as traumatising. However, most women do not go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and instead appear to be resilient. Research is still sparse in the field of traumatic birth and resilience, and it is not known how women develop resilience after a traumatic birth. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to understand the process of fostering resilience after a traumatic birth. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight female participants aged 30 to 50 years who experienced a traumati

Partnering with Communities to Improve Diabetic Foot Ulcer Care in High-Risk Populations.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remain one of the most devastating complications of diabetes, accounting for over 80% of nontraumatic amputations and contributing to a 5-year mortality rate exceeding 30%. Despite significant clinical advances, profound disparities persist. Racial and ethnic minoritized populations, rural communities, and people with low socioeconomic resources experience disproportionate rates of severe ulceration, infection, delayed healing, and amputation. PROBLEM: Traditional research approaches, often developed in academic settings without community input, have in

In pursuit of a cure: The plural therapeutic landscape of onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy in Cameroon - A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of epilepsy has been observed in several onchocerciasis-endemic villages in the Sanaga River basin, Cameroon. Recent studies suggest that ivermectin, a drug that is distributed annually with the aim of eliminating onchocerciasis, may have a protective effect against acquiring onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE). This study, therefore, provides an in-depth understanding of both the complex therapeutic landscape for epilepsy as well as the experiences related to the 'community-directed treatment with ivermectin' (CDTI) campaign in order to identify a more trenc
