Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections are ubiquitous. Children are infected with HSV resulting in totally asymptomatic acquisition to life-threatening disease. Therapy of HSV diseases of children can be considered according to severity and time of acquisition. Neonatal herpes simplex virus infections take one of three forms--disease localized to skin, eye, or mouth (SEM), encephalitis, or multiorgan disseminated disease. Treatment consists of intravenous (IV) administration of acyclovir. Supportive care for patients with life-threatening disease is an integral component of patient management.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the status and trends of antiviral treatment in outpatients with herpes zoster in China.
METHODS: Prescription data on antiviral drugs were extracted from the database of the Hospital Prescription Analysis Program of China according to the inclusion criteria. Yearly prescriptions and costs were calculated, and trends were analyzed. The trends were further stratified by age, sex, and specific drug use. The distribution of defined daily costs (DDCs) of valaciclovir and famciclovir were analyzed, and trends in the median DDCs were identified.

BACKGROUND: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a painful and refractory complication of herpes zoster. Treatments are either partially or totally ineffective for many people with PHN. Antiviral agents, used at the time of the rash, have been proposed as an intervention to prevent the development of PHN. This is the first update since the first publication of the review in 2009.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of antiviral agents in preventing PHN.
SEARCH METHODS: On 26 April 2013, we updated the searches in the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group Specialized Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE,

Acyclic guanosine analogues, a class of widely used antiviral drugs, can cause chronic toxicity and virus resistance. Therefore, it is essential to establish rapid and accurate methods to detect acyclic guanosine analogues. In this study, five acyclic guanosine analogues (acyclovir, famciclovir, ganciclovir, penciclovir, and valaciclovir) were used as positive targets to obtain broad-spectrum aptamers through Capture-SELEX technology. Real-time quantitative PCR (Q-PCR) was used to monitor the aptamer SELEX process. After the sixteen rounds of selection against mixed targets, sequences were obt

Oral antiviral agents currently represent the most important therapeutic keystone in the treatment of herpes zoster. Three oral antiviral agents are available for the treatment of herpes zoster: acyclovir, its derivative valacyclovir, and famciclovir. Meta-analysis of published data has shown that oral acyclovir significantly reduces various herpes zoster-related symptoms as well as the duration, intensity and prevalence of zoster-associated pain (ZAP). However, this drug does not influence postherpetic neuralgia. The newer agents famciclovir and valacyclovir exhibit a better oral bioavailabil

Shingles (herpes zoster) affects 20% of the population at some stage during their lives. The economic consequences can be significant. For example, in the UK, the costs of post-herpetic neuralgia, a complication that affects between 10 and 14% of patients with shingles, have been estimated between 4.8 million and 17.9 million pounds sterling (Pounds). This study is the first formal assessment of the cost-effectiveness of the 2 most commonly used oral antiviral treatments that have proven efficacy in patients with shingles: famciclovir and aciclovir (acyclovir). It shows that the clinical advan

In 1998, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released guidelines for the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. Several treatment advances have been made since the previous guidelines were published. Part I of this two-part article describes current recommendations for the treatment of genital ulcer diseases, urethritis and cervicitis. Treatment advances include effective single-dose regimens for many sexually transmitted diseases and improved therapies for herpes infections. Two single-dose regimens, 1 g of oral azithromycin and 250 mg of intramuscular ceftriaxone, are effecti

The treatment of herpes zoster relies on the intravenous or oral administration of antiviral drugs. Oral aciclovir for shingles is hindered by its low bioavailability. New antiviral drugs with improved oral bioavailability (famciclovir and valaciclovir) allow a better efficacy. The opportuneness of treating herpes zoster is different in the immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients, and during childhood and pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Bell's palsy is an acute, asymmetrical paralysis of facial muscles resulting from peripheral facial nerve dysfunction without a discernible origin. Combination therapy, which leverages the benefits of both antivirals and steroids, may be an effective treatment for Bell's palsy. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of steroids antiviral treatments for facial paralysis.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using the Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases. The search terms used were: (Bell's palsy OR facial palsy) AND (steroids OR corticosteroids) AND antiviral. All sel

BACKGROUND: Humoral-mediated as well as cell-mediated immunity is compromised in myeloma patients receiving treatment. Immunocompromised patients are at risk of developing herpes zoster. There is evidence from clinical trials that bortezomib therapy is associated with a significant risk of herpes zoster. It is the authors' clinical policy to administer long-term acyclovir prophylactically to all symptomatic myeloma patients.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the records of 125 myeloma patients who were treated with bortezomib and who also received routine acyclovir prophylaxis at the dose of

Lamivudine is a nucleoside analogue with efficacy in the suppression of hepatitis B viral (HBV) replication. In a previously reported study, lamivudine was administered to patients with chronic, actively replicating HBV infection who subsequently underwent liver transplantation. Patients became serum HBV DNA-negative in response to lamivudine before transplantation, which was continued in the post-transplant period. Two of four patients surviving the immediate postoperative period developed allograft reinfection 240 and 409 days post-transplant. The strain of the reinfecting virus was analyzed

INTRODUCTION: Targeting progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) addresses the current single biggest unmet need in the MS therapeutic landscape and anti-Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) therapy potentially strikes at the root cause. The SpironolacTone and famciclOvir in the treatment of Progressive MS to prevent disability progression (STOP-MS) trial has been developed to assess anti-EBV therapies in the treatment of progressive MS.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: STOP-MS is a multi-arm, multi-stage, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial testing spironolactone and famciclovir to prevent disability pro

Feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) can cause lifelong problems such as rhinotracheitis and ocular disease due to latency and reactivation in affected cats. The particular effects of antiviral drugs have been separately investigated in previous studies for decades and little is known about the combination treatment in active FHV-1 infection. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effects of antiviral combination on clinical effectiveness in cats with naturally occurring FHV-1 infection. 28 cats suffering from clinical signs of sneezing, nasal congestion, conjunctivitis, and eye/nose discharge were invol
