BACKGROUND: Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR, OMIM 133780) is a severe hereditary retinal disease characterized by incomplete retinal vascular development and pathological neovascularization. It has been reported that variants in nine genes are associated with FEVR, but they can only explain approximately 50% of FEVR patients, suggesting that other FEVR-associated variants or genes remain to be discovered.
METHODS: Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was carried out to analyse genomic DNA samples from the probands of 68 families with FEVR. Sanger sequencing was used to verify all identifie

UNLABELLED: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and diabetic cardiomyopathy continue to drive excess morbidity and mortality in diabetes, underscoring a critical gap between mechanistic insight and clinical translation. Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), a stress-inducible cytokine of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily, has emerged as a critical biomarker and putative modulator of metabolic inflammation. Yet the field remains divided on a fundamental question: is GDF-15 simply reporting tissue distress, or does it shape disease trajectories? In this article, we explore how GDF-15 m

Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a hereditary vitreoretinal disorder that can cause various types of retinal detachments. The abnormalities in eyes with FEVR are caused by poor vascularization in the peripheral retina. The genetics of FEVR is highly heterogeneous, and mutations in the genes for Wnt signaling and a transcription factor have been reported to be responsible for FEVR. These factors have been shown to be the regulators of the pathophysiological pathways of retinal vascular development. Studies conducted to identify the causative genes of FEVR have uncovered a diverse

Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a hereditary eye disorder characterized by avascularity of the peripheral retina, retinal exudates, tractional detachment, and retinal folds. The disorder is most commonly transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait, but X-linked transmission also occurs. To initiate the process of identifying the gene responsible for the X-linked disorder, linkage analysis has been performed with three previously unreported three- or four-generation families. Two-point analysis showed linkage to MAOA (Zmax = 2.1, theta max = 0) and DXS228 (Zmax = 0.5, theta max =

Six patients, members of a family with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR), were studied to verify whether the disease was associated with a suspected platelet aggregation defect. No hemostaseologic defect was found in either the affected or healthy members of the family; in particular, there were no grounds for suspecting any disturbance of arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation.

Background: Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a rare inherited ocular disorder characterized by abnormal peripheral retinal vascular development. KIF11 variants are known to cause autosomal dominant FEVR, but novel pathogenic variants remain to be identified. Objective: This study aimed to identify a novel causative variant of FEVR and provide evidence for genetic counseling. Methods: Whole-exome sequencing was performed on members of a Chinese family with FEVR. Rare variants with a gnomAD allele frequency <0.1% in East Asian and general populations were prioritized.
