Familial vasculitis: report of 2 families.

We observed systematic vasculitis (polyarteritis nodosa and Wegener's granulomatosis) in several members of 2 different families. Our experience and a review of the literature suggests that genetic factors are important but not sufficient to express clinical features of these diseases.

Familial paroxysmal ataxia: report of a family.

Three cases from one kindred who suffer from dominant paroxysmal ataxia are described. This is a rare benign non-progressive disorder of childhood onset, characterised by bouts of ataxia with abrupt onset lasting minutes or hours. Cases may be identified on the basis of a suggestive history, nystagmus persisting between episodes, and dominant inheritance. Treatment with acetazolamide is often dramatically effective. This family is thought to be the first described in the UK but many more probably exist, mislabelled as epilepsy or migraine.

Familial hypokalaemia and hypomagnesaemia. A further family.

A family of four siblings is reported. While both parents and one sib appear entirely normal, three other sibs give biochemical evidence of impaired potassium conservation, hypomagnesaemia and decreased urinary calcium output. Affected sibs may be symptom free and of either sex. The dominant clinical abnormality, when it does occur, is tetany and may be precipitated by non-specific illness. Sustained management of the hypokalaemia seems desirable.

Evaluating online family life education modules across family stages: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether online family life education (FLE) modules improved knowledge, attitudes, and confidence about key family health topics among young, middle, and older adults. BACKGROUND: Family life education supports healthy familial relationships across generations. Traditionally, FLE has been offered in-person over multiple weeks. Online FLE could make it easier to reach families. METHODS: The final sample was comprised of 164 adults (45% young adults, 45% middle adults, and 10% older adults). Ten online video modules (each ~10 min) were created by college students about a

Family resemblance: ten family members with prosopagnosia and within-class object agnosia.

We report on neuropsychological testing done with a family in which many members reported severe face recognition impairments. These 10 individuals were high functioning in everyday life and performed normally on tests of low-level vision and high-level cognition. In contrast, they showed clear deficits with tests requiring face memory and judgements of facial similarity. They did not show deficits with all aspects of higher level visual processing as all tested performed normally on a challenging facial emotion recognition task and on a global-local letter identification task. Family planning training in Maryland family practice and obstetrics/gynecology residency programs.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the extent of family planning and abortion training in Maryland family practice (FP) and obstetrics/gynecology (OB) residency training programs. METHODS: All final-year residents in every FP and OB residency training program in Maryland were asked in 1998 how many cases (0, 1-10, > 10) of ten methods of contraception and abortion they had managed. RESULTS: Seventy-five percent (55) of the 73 residents responded. Fifty percent of FP residents had never inserted an intrauterine device (IUD), 43% had never inserted an implant (Nor-plant), 37% had never prescribed emergency

Family stress, family functioning and emotional/behavioural problems following child psychiatric treatment.

This study assesses family stress, family functioning and emotional/behavioural problems in a sample of 80 formerly daytreated or residentially treated boys after a mean discharge period of four years. Family stress was assessed with a Questionnaire of Life Events (QLE) and family functioning with the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES). Emotional/behavioural problems were measured with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). The results showed that there were significant relationships between the QLE, FACES and CBCL scores. In particular, experiencing less negative life ev

A Chinese family with phenylketonuria and maternal phenylketonuria detected by family screening.

A 16-year-old boy with classical phenylketonuria (PKU) and mild mental retardation (IQ 69) was detected by the screening of mentally retarded school children in Taiwan with Guthrie's bacterial inhibition assay. The follow-up family study showed that one of his married elder sisters suffered from borderline mental retardation (IQ 75) and was also diagnosed as a classical case of PKU. She had borne one boy and one girl, both suffering from mild mental retardation, microcephaly, delay in linguistic development and severe growth retardation. This is the first known Chinese family with maternal PKU

Addressing stroke family caregivers' mental health through person‑ and family‑centred rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: We aim to summarize the literature on family caregiver experiences and support needs following stroke and highlight person- and family-centred care (PFCC) as a potential approach to addressing gaps in caregiver support and mental health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Literature was reviewed to examine caregiver mental health outcomes, caregiver-focused interventions, challenges integrating caregiver support into patient-centred models of care, and the potential role of PFCC. RESULTS: Caregivers are at increased risk of adverse mental health outcomes, including stress, burden, and psycholog

Building Family Capacity: supporting multiple family members to implement aided Language modeling.

Family-centered capacity-building practices have been shown to benefit children and families. However, limited research explores these practices for children who use augmentative and alternative communication. This study explored an intervention to teach family members to implement an Aided Language Modeling (ALM) strategy across natural activities at home. A single case multiple probe design was used to evaluate the intervention with five family members and a girl with autism. Results showed the intervention increased family members' percentage of high-fidelity ALM strategy use and rate of AL

A family study of HbS in a Malay family by molecular analysis.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited red cell disorder, characterized by the tendency of haemoglobin S or sickle haemoglobin to polymerize and assume a characteristic sickle shape. Molecular analysis has been the mainstay of detection method when confirmation is required. Previously a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based restriction enzyme analysis was used for this purpose. A simple bidirectional allele-specific amplification, recently described by Waterfall in 2001 was used to detect the GAG --> GTG mutation on codon 6 of the beta globin gene. Two sets of primers for the mutant and the

The relationship of family stability and family mealtime frequency with bulimia symptomatology.

The present study extended previous research reporting an association between frequency of family mealtimes and bulimia nervosa by exploring whether family mealtimes might be a component of a larger construct of family stability. One hundred thirty-four female undergraduates completed retrospective measures of family stability, frequency of shared family mealtimes, and a measure of bulimia symptomatology. Results indicate that family stability is a more comprehensive predictor of bulimia symptomatology than meal frequency alone. Implications for intervention and treatment options are discussed
