Family Resilience Matters: How Individual and Family Resilience Improve Health Outcomes for Veterans with Complex Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI), epilepsy, and other complex comorbidities often face increased risks of long-term physical and mental difficulties. Prior research has highlighted benefits of individual resilience among Veterans with respect to maintaining positive health outcomes in the face of stress and adversity. However, 1 area that has been underexplored is how family resilience may also contribute to better well-being post-deployment, especially when facing complex conditions like TBI or other post-traumatic sequelae. Considering the efforts of the Department of

Effect of preventive messages tailored to family history on health behaviors: the Family Healthware Impact Trial.

PURPOSE: We wanted to determine the impact of automated family history assessment and tailored messages for coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, colorectal, breast, and ovarian cancer on preventive behaviors compared with a standard preventive message. METHODS: The study was a cluster-randomized clinical trial that included 41 primary care practices, the majority in the Midwest, using Family Healthware, a self-administered, Web-based tool that assesses familial risk for the diseases and provides personalized risk-tailored messages. Patients in the control group received an age- and sex-s

Associations Among Work and Family Health Climate, Health Behaviors, Work Schedule, and Body Weight.

OBJECTIVES: Correctional employees exhibit elevated obesity rates. This study examines interrelations among health behaviors, health climate, body mass index (BMI), and work schedule. METHODS: Using survey results from correctional supervisors (n = 157), mediation and moderated-mediation analyses were performed to examine how health behaviors explain relationships between obesity, work health climate (WHC) and family health climate (FHC), and work schedule. RESULTS: Over 85% of the sample was overweight/obese (mean BMI = 30.20). Higher WHC and FHC were associated with lower BMI, mediated by

Housing and health: Evidence to act now to improve the health of children and families.

Extensive, high-quality evidence has demonstrated the importance of housing as a fundamental determinant of child health and development. At the same time, housing has become more unaffordable in the US, such that one in three children lives in unaffordable housing, more children are at risk of eviction and homelessness, housing quality has not improved meaningfully, and wide disparities exist in neighborhood access to socioeconomic opportunity. This narrative review chronicles the impacts of housing on children's health via four pillars: affordability, stability, quality and safety, and neigh

A comparison of physical health status, self-esteem, family support and health-promoting behaviours between aged living alone and living with family in Korea.

AIMS: This study examined and compared the physical health status, self-esteem, family support and health-promoting behaviours between aged living alone and the aged living with family. BACKGROUND: As the Korean population ages, the number of older people living alone is steadily rising. Previous studies have been conducted to define the factors affecting the health of older people. However, research studies focused on the impact of family support, which potentially affects the overall health of older people, have been rarely conducted. DESIGN: This was a comparative descriptive design. MET

Injury and health among children in vulnerable families.

BACKGROUND: Injury is the leading cause of death for children older than 1 year. The incidence of childhood injury varies greatly depending on social factors, including income, family violence, and other social stressors. This study reports the incidence of injury among children aged 5 years in a cohort of vulnerable families. METHODS: The Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study is a longitudinal cohort of approximately 5,000 at-risk families across the United States. Data from interviews with mothers conducted shortly after giving birth and follow-up surveys at 1 year, 3 years, and 5 year

Injury and health among toddlers in vulnerable families.

BACKGROUND: Injury is consistently a leading cause of death for young children, and social stressors can increase injury risk. We investigated the incidence of injury and developmental and health outcomes among children up to 3 years of age in a cohort of vulnerable families. METHODS: The Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study is a longitudinal cohort of approximately 5,000 families across the United States, which deliberately oversamples unwed couples and lower income families. Data from interviews with mothers conducted shortly after birth and follow-up surveys at 1 year and 3 years wer

Effect of abuse by a close family member on health.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse on physical and psychological health among Icelandic women visiting an emergency department (ED) or high-risk prenatal care clinic (HRPCC). We hypothesized that the women's previous experience of abuse by a close family member and current experiences of abuse by an intimate partner, would predict their physical and psychological health. METHOD: A cross-sectional study design was used. Data were collected using questionnaires (e.g., Women Abuse Screening Tool (WAST) and semistructured interviews, from a sample of 208 wome

Preventive health behaviors and familial breast cancer.

AIM: To examine medical and lifestyle preventive behaviors among women with varying levels of familial breast cancer risk. METHODS: Using cross-sectional data from the Minnesota Breast Cancer Family Study, a historical cohort of 426 families, we compared medical (mammography adherence, antiestrogen use, and prophylactic surgery) and lifestyle (physical activity, smoking, alcohol, and diet) behaviors across three groups of cancer-free women ages 18 to 95 defined by their family history of breast cancer. Family history was classified as high-risk, moderate-risk, or average to low-risk depending

Evaluation of a respiratory health program for farmers and their families.

Occupational exposures to organic dusts, gases, welding fumes and agricultural chemicals result in farmers' increased risk of respiratory health problems compared to other workers. The Respiratory Health Program for Saskatchewan farmers addresses the difficulties of delivering an occupational health program to a sparsely distributed population on the Prairies. We summarized their pulmonary function and respiratory health by spirometry and questionnaire respectively. The necessity of the program was demonstrated by the frequency of lower than predicted pulmonary function tests and referrals to

Perinatal death, the family, and the role of the health professional.

In order to substantially assist a grieving family at the time of perinatal death, the health care team should have sufficient knowledge of the grief reaction, including the duration, maternal/paternal differences, and perinatal psychodynamics. Immediate support includes bereavement counseling. Predelivery care should be provided, if appropriate. The health care team should be prepared for common questions and know about local cultural traditions. Follow-up care after discharge, including anticipatory guidance, is important. The issues of repeat pregnancies and holiday behavior should be addre

Coparenting and Mental Health in Families with Jailed Parents.

The number of families affected by parental incarceration in the United States has increased dramatically in the past three decades, with primarily negative implications for adult mental health and child and family well-being. Despite research documenting increased strain on coparenting relationships, less is known regarding the relation between adult mental health and coparenting quality. This study investigated coparenting in families with young children currently experiencing parental incarceration. In a diverse sample of 86 jailed parent-caregiver dyads (n = 172), this analysis of a short-

Health problems of anaesthetists and their families in the West Midlands.

A survey of all anaesthetists in the West Midlands region--that is, 10% of all the anaesthetists in England and Wales--showed that one in 10 of their children had been referred to a consultant because of a congenital or nonacquired anomaly. Abortions among anaesthetists' families were also common but more so when the mother was an anaesthetist. The anomalies were concentrated particularly in the central nervous system and musculoskeletal system, and girls were worst affected. The mean birth weights were below normal, more so when the mothers were anaesthetists. Girls with anomalies were partic
