Parental mental health and union dissolution: The role of conflict during separation.

Based on chronic stress theory, this study explores the effect of separation on parental mental health, operationalized over the State-Trait Depression Scale (STDS). It investigates depression trajectories surrounding separation and examines how patterns differ by the conflict level during separation. Data comes from the German Family Panel pairfam (N = 2779 partnered and 633 separated parents). The analysis spans the period from two years before to two years after separation and draws on fixed-effects regression models with dynamic treatment effects. Results show that depression trajectories

Early family environments and traumatic experiences associated with borderline personality disorder.

Childhood trauma experiences (e.g., sexual abuse, physical abuse, witnessed violence, and early separation experiences) and family environment characteristics were assessed with a questionnaire from a sample of depressed female inpatients; 17 were diagnosed as having borderline personality disorder (BPD), and 19 received no such diagnosis (NBPD). Significantly more BPD individuals than NBPD individuals reported histories of sexual abuse, physical abuse, and witnessed violence. Of these trauma variables, sexual abuse emerged as the only significant predictor of dimensional BPD score, even after

Association between parental separation, childhood trauma, neuroticism, and depression: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Parental separation has been suggested to be associated with depression development in offspring. The new family constellation subsequent to separation could be associated with elevated scores of childhood trauma, shaping more emotionally instable personalities. This could ultimately be a risk factor for mood disorders and particularly the development of depression in life. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we investigated the associations between parental separation, childhood trauma (CTQ) and personality (NEO-FFI) in a sample of N = 119 patients diagnosed with depression and N =

Graphdiyne confined-membrane with intrinsic in-plane-pores for angstrom-scale gas sieving.

Graphdiyne (GDY), an emerging carbon allotrope with inherent and well-defined in-plane nanopores, holds high potential as a molecular sieve membrane. However, experimentally validating its precision separation capability has been hindered by the challenges in fabricating continuous membranes with vertically accessible intraplane pores. Here, we develop a confinement-driven pore-registered synthesis strategy that enables the templated growth of GDY within the aligned meso-channels of covalent organic framework (COF), producing confined GDY nanomembranes. The resulting GDY⊕COF membrane exhibits

Parental imprisonment: effects on boys' antisocial behaviour and delinquency through the life-course.

BACKGROUND: Prisoners' children appear to suffer profound psychosocial difficulties during their parents' imprisonment. However, no previous study has examined later-life outcomes for prisoners' children compared to children separated from parents for other reasons. We hypothesise that parental imprisonment predicts boys' antisocial and delinquent behaviour partly because of the trauma of separation, partly because parental imprisonment is a marker for parental criminality, and partly because of childhood risks associated with parental imprisonment. METHOD: This study uses prospective longitu

Cumulative social risk exposure in childhood and smoking and excessive alcohol use in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Social inequalities in adult smoking and excessive alcohol intake may be associated with exposure to multiple childhood social risk factors across different domains of risk within the household. METHODS: We used data from a cross-sectional cohort study of adults (40-75 years) in 1993-97 living in England (N = 19466) to examine the association between clusters of childhood social risks across different domains with adult smoking and excessive alcohol use. Participants reported exposure to six childhood social risk factors, current smoking behaviour and alcohol intake. Factor analys

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety-disordered youth: secondary outcomes from a randomized clinical trial evaluating child and family modalities.

This study examined secondary outcomes of a randomized clinical trial that evaluated an individual cognitive-behavioral (ICBT), family-based cognitive-behavioral (FCBT), and family-based education, support and attention (FESA) treatment for anxious youth. Participants (161) were between 7 and 14 years (M=10.27) of age and had a principal diagnosis of separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, and/or generalized anxiety disorder. Hierarchical linear modeling examined youth-reported depressive symptomatology and parent- and teacher-reported externalizing behavior and adaptive functioning at pre

Adult agoraphobia and childhood separation anxiety: using children's literature to understand the link.

Separation-anxiety stories are frequent in children's literature and have eight characteristic elements. Peter Rabbit is used as an early and very simple example. A case study follows which illustrates the fear of separating from the family in an adult agoraphobic. The Wizard of Oz is presented as a more expanded version of a separation-anxiety story. A case study follows which illustrates a woman's difficulty with maturity and separation. A review of the literature is made in which studies are cited which indicate a history of childhood-separation problems in adult agoraphobics. Studies also

Visiting a loved one in the ICU with the aid of dedicated booklets is associated with reduced separation anxiety in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Opening visits in Intensive Care Units (ICU) to children and adolescents encounters fears and resistance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact on children's psychological well-being of a prepared visit to family members hospitalized in the ICU. METHODS: A quasi-experimental, pre-post-intervention design was implemented in 3 ICUs where children were allowed to visit. Children (7-17 years) with a close family member (parent, sister/brother, grandparent) hospitalized in ICU on mechanical ventilation for ≥ 48 h were eligible to participate. Within three days of the family

Relationship between family risk factors and adolescent mental health.

OBJECTIVES: Family risk factors are crucial to adolescent mental health. Few studies have investigated the complex relationship between family risk factors and adolescent mental health. This study aims to investigate the complex relationship between family cumulative risk (FCR) and adolescent mental health, and to clarify the factors contributing to adolescent mental health problems. METHODS: This study recruited 903 junior high school students and 991 senior high school students in Changsha, Hunan and was conducted through an offline computer-based questionnaire survey using the Middle Schoo

What About the Children? Co-Occurrence of Child Maltreatment and Parental Separation.

The aim of this study was to investigate (a) the extent to which child maltreatment co-occurs with parental separation and (b) associations between different types of child maltreatment and various types of separation-associated interparental conflict. Professionals working with children (N = 785) reported each case of suspected child maltreatment they observed during a 3-month period and indicated whether parental divorce or separation was about to take place or had taken place. This resulted in 530 reported cases that matched the definitions of child maltreatment for which information on par

Occurrences of non-linear phenomena and vocal harshness in dog whines as indicators of stress and ageing.

During social interactions, acoustic parameters of tetrapods' vocalisations reflect the emotional state of the caller. Higher levels of spectral noise and the occurrence of irregularities (non-linear phenomena NLP) might be negative arousal indicators in alarm calls, although less is known about other distress vocalisations. Family dogs experience different levels of stress during separation from their owner and may vocalise extensively. Analysing their whines can provide evidence for the relationship between arousal and NLP. We recorded 167 family dogs' separation behaviour including vocalisa

Neonatal intensive care: communication and attachment.

Birth has traditionally been recognized as a family-centred event where immediate exposure to the infant occurs and where the family begins, through direct contact, touch and voice, to form an attachment to the infant. In high-risk pregnancy and delivery, medical and technological advances distance the family from the birth event. This article describes some aspects of a research project with identified factors that facilitate and hinder family and mother attachment to the infant during periods of separation subsequent to premature delivery or other problems which require management in a neona

Relationship between family dysfunction and the presence of generalized anxiety disorder in single-parent families.

BACKGROUND: The family structure has evolved into various emerging types, such as single-parent families, which, due to their characteristics, have higher prevalence of mental disorders. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between family functioning and generalized anxiety disorder in single-parent families. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was an observational, analytical, cross-sectional, comparative study involving 440 children from single-parent families. Participants were divided into two groups based on the family functioning questionnaire (FF-SIL). Quantitative variables were compared

Separation experiences: a new look at an old topic.

Research findings on the effects of separation are reviewed. Children of working mothers develop as well as those whose mothers remain at home. The effects of day care for very young children depend very much on the quality of care provided. Admission to hospital is stressful for preschool children through separation from the family, lack of opportunity to form new attachments, a strange environment, and disturbed parent-child relationships on return home; recurrent hospital admissions may have long-term sequelae, especially in children under chronic stress. An institutional upbringing need no

Thiol-ene click derived structurally well-defined per(3,5-dimethyl)phenylcarbamoylated cationic cyclodextrin separation material for achiral and chiral chromatography.

In this work, a novel single sulfoether-bridged cationic per(3,5-dimethyl)phenylcarbamoylated-β-cyclodextrin separation material was prepared by thiol-ene click chemistry and characterized by using FTIR spectroscopy, solid-state 13 C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, which confirmed the correct structure. The separation material exhibited a good achiral separation performance for benzene homologues and phenylamine analogs, especially o-xylene and m-xylene, and m-phenylenediamine and o-phenylenediamine can be discriminated by the (3,5-dimethyl)phenylcarbamoyl cyclodextrins. Project IMPACT: Achieving Family Stability for Parents With Intellectual Disabilities.

Parents with intellectual disabilities are disproportionately represented within child welfare systems in the US. Meanwhile, there is evidence to suggest that this is a sizeable population, and child welfare systems encounter challenges in meeting families' needs. This study examines the potential efficacy of Project IMPACT, an intensive, in-home parent training program designed for parents with intellectual disabilities who have child welfare involvement. The aim of the program is to prevent family separation by improving parenting skills. The sample included 134 families who had participated

Children's experience of loss by parental migration in inner-city Jamaica.

Migratory separation, when parents migrate and leave their children behind, was investigated in a case-control sample of 9- to 10-year-olds living in inner-city communities in Kingston and St Andrew, Jamaica (N = 54). Data analyses using descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations showed that children's reactions to their parents' migration were directly related to poor school performance and psychological difficulties. Additionally, being currently exposed to violence in the home and/or community was significantly associated with high scores on a measure of grief intensity. "Protective"

Personal and family stress in individuals with diabetes and vision loss.

The intrapersonal distress and the impact of diabetes and vision impairment on marital functioning were assessed. Significant degrees of intrapersonal distress were demonstrated by the Beck Depression Inventory, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Rand Mental Health Index. Family functioning as assessed by the Family Assessment Device was significantly compromised. Vision impairment was a major stressor in the spousal relationship. Of 18 subjects who had been involved in a committed relationship at the onset of vision impairment, 9 had separated. Separation occurred at a mean of 1.6 years after t
