Family support decreases influence of deviant peers on Hispanic adolescents' substance use.

Investigated the interplay of family support and peer modeling on adolescent alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use and gang involvement within an ecosystemic model. The predominantly Hispanic sample of 236 eighth-grade students attended a public middle school in a high-density, impoverished Miami neighborhood, characterized by high rates of criminal activity, substance abuse, and other stressors, placing the adolescents at risk for negative developmental outcomes. The participants reported the level of perceived social support they received from family members and rates of drug use and gang, inv

Life stress and health: personality, coping, and family support in stress resistance.

The purpose of this study was to extend work on factors that buffer the potentially negative health effects of life stress. Using a survey with a representative community sample, respondents were separated into a Distressed Group (high stress, high distress) and a Stress Resistant Group (high stress, low distress). Findings demonstrated that those who adapted to life stress with little physical or psychological strain were more easy-going and less inclined to use avoidance coping than individuals who became ill under stress. In addition, in the stress resistant group, men were more self-confid

Building Family Capacity: supporting multiple family members to implement aided Language modeling.

Family-centered capacity-building practices have been shown to benefit children and families. However, limited research explores these practices for children who use augmentative and alternative communication. This study explored an intervention to teach family members to implement an Aided Language Modeling (ALM) strategy across natural activities at home. A single case multiple probe design was used to evaluate the intervention with five family members and a girl with autism. Results showed the intervention increased family members' percentage of high-fidelity ALM strategy use and rate of AL

Families and Schools Together: an experimental study of multi-family support groups for children at risk.

We evaluated a multi-family support group intervention program in elementary schools. Kindergarten through third-grade children at eight urban schools in a Midwestern university community were universally invited to participate in the Families and Schools Together (FAST) program, and made up half of the study participants; the other half were K-3 children identified by teachers as having behavioral problems and being at risk for referral to special education services. Children were initially paired on the basis of five relevant matching variables, including teacher assessment of behavioral pro

The Role of Family and Supporter Accommodation in Late-Life Anxiety.

OBJECTIVES: Family accommodation (e.g. providing excessive reassurance, facilitating avoidance) is widespread and exacerbates anxiety in children and young adults, however has not been examined in older adults. There are reasons to expect that family accommodation may also exacerbate anxiety in later life. However, it is important to consider that age-related changes in physical or cognitive abilities may necessitate the need for functional assistance from others during assessment. This study aimed to examine the phenomenology and clinical correlates of family accommodation in older adults. M

Challenges and Supports for Families of Youth with Behavioral Health Needs.

As mental health needs increase for youth across the United States, little is known about how these youth engage with emergency psychiatric services (EPS) and how accessing of these services is experienced by the family caregivers. This study utilized interviews with 19 youth and their adult caregivers, detailing their experiences with EPS and community needs. Interviews were conducted in-person and over the phone, lasting approximately 45 min. Qualitative data were analyzed following grounded theory to elicit a potential new theoretical view of youth and family experiences and needs associate

[Supporting families in the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease in children].

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in children is a frequent reason for medical consultation. It is defined as the involuntary passage of gastric contents into the esophagus, with or without regurgitation and vomiting. It can become pathological if it leads to embarrassing symptoms and complications. Often confronted with this pathology, nursery nurses sometimes find themselves at a loss when it comes to treating the symptoms of pathological GERD in a toddler, as well as in supporting the parents. In order to give them some ideas, a review of the literature on the benefits of non-medicinal

[Coping and Supporting Patients and Families of Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration].

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) is a comprehensive term encompassing a group of clinically overlapping but heterogeneous conditions with selective frontal and temporal lobar neurodegeneration. Among the three clinical subtypes of FTLD, behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and semantic dementia (SD) were specified as "designated intractable diseases" by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in 2015. Under this designation system, relatively young patient with bvFTD or SD of certain severities can receive partial financial support from the Japanese local gover

According to the results both mothers and fathers consider it essential that their views and expectations are given due attention in the planning of family training. Specific issues that were thought to require priority attention in family training were the actual

Professionals' Perspectives on Supporting Deaf Multilingual Learners and Their Families.

Parents frequently report that advice from professionals is important in making decisions about how their child with hearing loss will communicate. Little is currently known about how professionals support parents raising children with hearing loss in spoken language multilingual environments, children who are described as d/Deaf multilingual learners (DMLs). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to gain insight into professionals' perspectives and experiences working with such families, particularly in relation to supporting parents in decision-making about multilingualism and langua
