Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the prevention of relapse in patients with stable bipolar disorder: A 6-month pilot randomized controlled trial.

This study investigated the efficacy and safety of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) in relapse prevention of bipolar disorder (BD), addressing the shortcomings of current medications. Thirty-one stable BD patients were randomized to receive n-3 PUFAs or placebo for 6 months and intergroup differences in the incidence of the recurrence of bipolar depression were assessed. Differences in depression severity, manic symptoms, and routine biochemical parameters were also assessed. Interestingly, n-3 PUFAs demonstrated a favorable preventive effect on bipolar depression recurrence (p=

The Effect of Fat Intake with Increased Omega-6-to-Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Ratio in Animal Models of Early and Late Alzheimer's Disease-like Pathogenesis.

This work aims to clarify the effect of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake on the adult brain affected by amyloid pathology. McGill-R-Thy1-APP transgenic (Tg) rat and 5xFAD Tg mouse models that represent earlier or later disease stages were employed. The animals were exposed to a control diet (CD) or an HFD based on corn oil, from young (rats) or adult (mice) ages for 24 or 10 weeks, respectively. In rats and mice, the HFD impaired reference memory in wild-type (WT) animals but did not worsen it in Tg, did not cause obesity, and did not increase triglycerides or glucose levels. C

Insights into the Effects of Dietary Omega-6/Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid (PUFA) Ratio on Oxidative Metabolic Pathways of Oncological Bone Disease and Global Health.

Various nutrients have been designated as antioxidants, with a possible effect on diseases like cancer. This is partly due to their effect on prostaglandins, thereby affecting local pathological metabolic acidosis. This paper aims to summarize the culprit pathophysiological mechanisms involved, with a focus on the bone microenvironment. The omega- 6/omega-3 PUFA ratio is particularly investigated for its antioxidative effects, countering these pathways to fight the disease. This feature is looked at concerning its impact on health in general, with a particular focus on malignant bone metastasi

A balanced omega-6:3 fatty acid diet can shield honey bee cognition from pesticide impairment.

Among the stressors honey bees are exposed to in agricultural settings, poor diet and pesticide exposure are two of the most prevalent and concerning. We tested whether a balanced omega-6:3 fatty acid pollen-substitute diet could increase the resilience of honey bees to the harms of pesticide exposure, focusing on measuring bee survival and olfactory learning. We raised bees on a diet either balanced in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids (1:1 ratio) or unbalanced (5:1) for 2 weeks before providing them with either 10 nmol l-1 thiamethoxam (TMX) in 2.0 mol l-1 sucrose solution or a control (pure 2

Fatty acid composition in major depression: decreased omega 3 fractions in cholesteryl esters and increased C20: 4 omega 6/C20:5 omega 3 ratio in cholesteryl esters and phospholipids.

Recently, there were some reports that major depression may be accompanied by alterations in serum total cholesterol, cholesterol ester and omega 3 essential fatty acid levels and by an increased C20: 4 omega 6/C20: 5 omega 3, i.e., arachidonic acid/eicosapentaenoic, ratio. The present study aimed to examine fatty acid composition of serum cholesteryl esters and phospholipids in 36 major depressed, 14 minor depressed and 24 normal subjects. Individual saturated (e.g., C14:0; C16:0, C18:0) and unsaturated (e.g., C18:1, C18:2, C20:4) fatty acids in phospholipid and cholesteryl ester fractions we

Whole-body Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty-acid reserves in healthy controls and fatal COVID-19: Evidence of systemic long-chain n-3 depletion.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: While circulating lipid biomarkers are widely used, little is known about the absolute tissue reserves of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in humans or their availability during severe systemic illness. We therefore mapped absolute PUFA concentrations across major human tissues and examined whether fatal COVID-19 is associated with depletion of long-chain n-3 substrate pools. METHODS: Absolute fatty acid concentrations (mg/g wet tissue) were quantified across nine tissues (adipose tissue, brain, heart, lungs, liver, spleen, skeletal muscle, small inte

FADS1 contributes to anesthesia/surgery-induced cognitive impairment by aggravating omega-6 fatty acid metabolic disruption in aged mice.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is one of the most prevalent neurological complications in elderly surgical patients. Dysregulated lipid metabolism is a hallmark of aging and is strongly associated with cognitive dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate whether ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) metabolism contribute to PND and examined whether fatty acid desaturase 1 (FADS1) represents a key regulatory link between fatty acid metabolism and PND in aged mice. METHODS: An anesthesia/surgery-induced cognitive dysfunction model was established via laparotomy in 18-m

Higher plasma omega-6 fatty acids are associated with lower dementia risk: evidence from NMR metabolomics and Alzheimer's disease polygenic risk in the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Circulating polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been implicated in neurodegenerative processes, yet epidemiological evidence remains inconsistent. Genetic susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease (AD), commonly indexed by a polygenic risk score (PRS), is a major determinant of dementia risk. However, few large-scale prospective studies have jointly examined plasma fatty acid profiles and genetic liability to AD in relation to incident dementia. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the independent and combined associations of plasma omega-3 PUFAs, omega-6 PUFAs, and the omega-6/omega-3 rat

Early career achievement award: supplementing omega-6 fatty acids to enhance early embryonic development and pregnancy establishment in Bos indicus and B. taurus beef cows.

Our research group investigated the impacts of supplementing Ca salts of soybean oil (CSSO), a source of omega-6 fatty acids (FAs), on reproductive performance of beef cows. Initial studies were conducted with Nelore (Bos indicus) cows grazing tropical pastures. Cows were assigned to fixed-time artificial insemination (AI) and supplemented or not with 100 g/d (as-fed basis) of CSSO, and supplementation regimens ranged from days -11 to 28 relative to AI. Overall, CSSO supplementation during the 21 d after AI increased (P < 0.01) pregnancy rates from 38.1% (623/1,635 as pregnant/total nonsupplem

Modulation of C-reactive protein and plasma omega-6 fatty acid levels by phospholipase A2 gene polymorphisms following a 6-week supplementation with fish oil.

This clinical trial investigated the impact of a six-week supplementation with fish oil and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in PLA2G4A and PLA2G6 genes on total omega-6 fatty acid (n-6 FA) levels in plasma phospholipids (PL) and plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in 191 subjects. Interaction effects between SNPs and supplementation modulated total n-6 FAs and CRP levels in both men and women. Associations between SNPs and total n-6 FA levels and between SNPs and CRP levels were identified in men, independently of supplementation. Supplementation decreased total n-6 FAs without affec

Treatment of Resistant Acne Vulgaris in Adolescents Using Dietary Supplementation with Magnesium, Phosphate and Fatty Acids (Omega 6 and 7): Comparison with 13-Cis-Retinoic Acid.

The burden of disease associated with acne vulgaris has continued to increase over time in the world population. This continued growth suggests that there is an unmet dermatologic need for this condition worldwide. Potential sequelae of acne, such as scarring, depigmentation, and marked emotional and psychological problems (e.g., low self-esteem), can lead to significant morbidity. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether dietary supplementation with magnesium, phosphate, omega 6 (linoleic acid calcium salt - C18:2 fatty acid Ca salt), and omega 7 (palmitoleic acid calcium salt - C

Omega-6 fatty acids and the risk of cardiovascular disease: insights from a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and a Mendelian randomization study.

INTRODUCTION: Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) represent almost 15% of the total energy intake in Western countries. Their effects on the cardiovascular (CV) risk factors are still controversial. Thus, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized control trials (RCTs) as well as a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the links and possible causality between supplementation or serum levels of omega-6 PUFA, CV disease (CVD) and cardiometabolic risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Selected databases were searched until September 2019 to identify prospec

The effect of dietary omega-6 fatty acid enrichment in rodent models of military-relevant acute traumatic psychological stress and traumatic brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Sequelae from traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are major career-limiting factors for combat soldiers. Overlap between TBI and PTSD symptoms alongside other common comorbidities complicate the diagnosis and treatment. Systems-level and high-throughput approaches are key in understanding the underlying biomolecular mechanisms and differentiating these conditions. METHODS: The present study identifies dietary factors and proposes mechanisms behind psychological stress and TBI, using established preclinical animal models and a multi-omics app

Inflammation and wound healing in cats with chronic gingivitis/stomatitis after extraction of all premolars and molars were not affected by feeding of two diets with different omega-6/omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid ratios.

Feline chronic gingivitis/stomatitis (FCGS) is a painful inflammatory disease in cats. Extraction of teeth, including all premolars and molars, has been shown to be the therapy of choice in cats not responding sufficiently to home care (e.g. tooth brushing) and/or medical treatment (corticosteroids and/or antibiotics). In this study, we hypothesize that a cat food with an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (ω6 PUFA) to ω3 PUFA ratio of 10:1 reduces inflammation of the FCGS and accelerates soft tissue wound healing of the gingiva after dental extractions, compared to a cat food with a ω6:ω3 PUF

Dietary omega-3 fatty acids as potential inhibitors of carcinogenesis: effect on DNA adduct formation of 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) in mice and rats.

The heterocyclic amine 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) is carcinogenic in the CDF1 mouse, causing lymphomas (spleen and lymph nodes) and in the F344 rat, causing mammary tumours in the female and colon tumours in the male. Dietary fish oil, a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, exhibits chemopreventive properties in several rodent tumour models. The potential chemopreventive properties of dietary omega-3 fatty acid ethyl ester concentrate (O3C) were tested by evaluating its effects on the formation and removal of PhIP-DNA adducts.
