People with Huntington's disease (HD) face difficult emotional and practical challenges throughout their illness, including in the pre-symptomatic stage. There are, however, extremely limited psychosocial interventions adapted to or researched for HD. We adapted and piloted an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program in people with pre-symptomatic HD to determine if the program (i) was feasible and acceptable to participants, (ii) resulted in increased mindfulness understanding and skills, and (iii) led to improved psychological adjustment. Quantitative measures of mindfulness,

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a feasibility study on a new, tablet-delivered treatment for unusual sensory experiences in service-users with an At Risk Mental States for psychosis.
DESIGN: A mixed method design was employed, using content analysis to investigate whether service-users and therapists found the new treatment acceptable and helpful. We also collected data on the impact of treatment, but without a control group could not make any claims about effectiveness.
METHODS: Eligible participants were contacted before starting treatment and offered the chance to participate. Assessments were con

While personalized feedback interventions (PFIs) are a promising indicated prevention strategy for reducing gambling behavior and gambling harm immediately following intervention, no meta-analysis has examined the durability of these reductions. The current systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the effect of PFIs immediately following the intervention and in the months following the intervention. The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed were searched in January 2024 to identify randomized controlled trials comparing PFIs to standard care or in

Turner syndrome is a genetic condition caused by a complete or partial loss of one of the X chromosomes. Previous studies indicate that Turner syndrome is associated with challenges in social skills, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. A possible mechanism is a reduced social influence on learning. The current study examined the impact of social and non-social feedback on learning in women with Turner syndrome (n = 35) and a sex- and age-matched control group (n = 37). Participants were instructed to earn points by repeatedly choosing between two stimuli with unequal proba

Background and Objectives: Low participation rates in exercise programs among older adults highlight the need for theory-driven, biopsychosocial interventions that enhance adherence, self-efficacy, and functional outcomes. Grounded in principles of motor learning and behavioral reinforcement within physiotherapy practice, this study aimed to examine the effect of periodic assessments combined with verbal feedback on functional and psychological outcomes in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A pilot RCT was conducted involving 54 individuals aged ≥65 years (53 women and 1 man), recruited

Whereas the effects of the early stages of acute stress seem to improve learning and increase loss aversion in decision making, in later stages, the opposite has been found, an impairment in decision making probably due to higher reward-attraction, as the STARS approach suggests. This study aims to investigate the effects of the later stages of acute stress on decision making and its underlying processes using a computational model. We hypothesized that stress would affect underlying cognitive strategies during decision making. Ninety-five participants were randomly distributed into two groups

In situations with low external stimulation, manic patients often present rapid declines in vigilance, with microsleeps occurring even in the 1st min of EEG recordings (lability of vigilance regulation). We postulate that manic symptoms creating a high level of external stimulation serve to stabilize vigilance. Theoretical arguments and empirical results are presented, showing that both mania and ADHD should be interpreted as vigilance autostabilization syndromes. The therapeutic effects of psychostimulants can be explained by their vigilance-stabilizing properties. They are well proven for AD

Social-evaluative feedback is a key component of human social interaction, influencing self-view, behavior, and psychological well-being. This study investigates the neural mechanisms underlying social feedback processing in relation to self-view congruence. Participants (N = 54: 38 females, 15 males, 1 nonbinary) received putative evaluative feedback that was better, congruent, or worse than their self-view rating, previously presented. Brain responses were investigated using combined measurement of event-related potentials (ERPs) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Both types o

Adolescence is a period of rapid biological and psychological development, characterized by increasing emotional reactivity and risk-taking, especially in peer contexts. Theories of adolescent neural development suggest that the balance in sensitivity across neural threat, reward and regulatory systems contributes to these changes. Building on previous research, this study used a novel social feedback task to explore activation and functional connectivity in the context of social threat and reward in a sample of mid-adolescent girls (n = 86, Mage = 16.32). When receiving negative peer feedback

A cognitive explanation of the association between acute hyperventilation and panic attacks has been proposed: the extent to which sensations produced by hyperventilation are interpreted in a negative and catastrophic way is said to be a major determinant of panic. Non-clinical subjects were provided with a negative or a positive interpretation of the sensations produced by equivalent amounts of voluntary hyperventilation. As predicted, there was a significant difference between positive and negative interpretation conditions on ratings of positive and negative affect. Subjects in the positive

The Dual Control Model of sexual response has been mostly tested with men. As such, there is a lack of evidence on how such model applies to women's experience of sexual arousal, particularly when they face a threatening situation such as the threat of sexual performance failure. The aim of the current study was to test whether the Dual Control Model dimensions predict women's sexual responses to a bogus negative feedback about their sexual performance. In addition, 22 women were exposed to a sexually explicit film clip, while their genital arousal was being measured. During this presentation,

Research indicates that the reward positivity (RewP) can be elicited by both appetitive gain (e.g., winning money) and aversive outcome avoidance (e.g., safety from a noise blast). Yet, little work has linked these differential reward responses with avoidance-related psychopathology risk factors. The present study addressed this gap by examining the associations of distress intolerance (DI), a risk factor for maladaptive avoidance-based strategies, with reward responses during two versions of a simple guessing task: the monetary doors task and aversive avoidance doors task. Young adults (n = 1

Social exclusion threatens belongingness, triggering adaptive reward processing changes. It remains unknown whether exclusion selectively alters social (vs. monetary) reward processing via hypervigilance or compensatory affiliation mechanisms. To address this, we recruited 61 participants to complete a Cyberball-based social exclusion or inclusion induction, with an electroencephalogram recorded during subsequent social and monetary reward tasks. Results revealed that positive versus negative feedback elicited stronger reward positivity in the social inclusion condition, while such an effect w

OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that auditory hallucinations and delusions of control in persons with schizophrenia could involve a disconnection between an "intention center" and a "monitoring center."
METHOD: To test this model directly, the authors used a delayed auditory feedback paradigm in which the subject hears his or her own speech delayed electronically by a fraction of a second. In normal, subjects this produces dysfluency, which is thought to occur because an expectancy about the perceptual arrival of speech, formed in a monitoring center on the basis of corollary discharge from

INTRODUCTION: Data-driven training monitoring has enhanced the precision of training-load assessment, fatigue detection, and training regulation in competitive sport. However, continuous data collection, performance metric comparisons, and evaluative feedback may also constitute emerging sources of psychological stress for athletes. Drawing on the Technology Stress Generators Model, the Challenge-Hindrance Stressor Framework, and the Job Demands-Resources Model, this study examined the relationships among data-driven training monitoring stress (DTMS), evaluative anxiety, psychological exhausti

BACKGROUND: As an inter-individual psychological and behavioural construct, coachability is hypothesised to be a fundamental determinant of learning and performance enhancement within sport, business and education domains. Despite its perceived importance, consensus on a precise definition and its exact dimensional components has yet to be established.
OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to: (1) establish consensus on a common definition and (2) identify consistent constituent component constructs of coachability evident in the literature.
METHODS: Using systematic search and screening

As academic competition intensifies, graduate students are facing increasing psychological pressure in high-stress academic environments, which negatively influences both their mental well-being and academic performance. However, there are still certain gaps regarding how supervisor perfectionism influences student feedback behaviors. This study explores how supervisor perfectionism influences student feedback behavior through their perceived stress and examines the moderating role of supervisor-student exchange quality in this process. Based on the cognitive appraisal theory of stress, this r

Virtual reality technology brings a new experience to human-computer interaction, while wearable force feedback devices can enhance the immersion of users in interaction. This paper proposes a wearable fingertip force feedback device that uses a tendon drive mechanism, with the aim of simulating the stiffness characteristics of objects within virtual scenes. The device adjusts the rotation angle of the torsion spring through a DC motor, and then uses a wire to convert the torque into a feedback force at the user's index fingertips, with an output force of up to 4 N and a force change rate of u
