Functional anatomy, jaw mechanisms, and feeding behavior of Dunkleosteus terrelli (Placodermi, Arthrodira).

The comparative and functional anatomy of the cleaver-like jaws of the Late Devonian arthrodire Dunkleosteus terrelli remains poorly understood, despite significant advances in our understanding of arthrodire anatomy. Here, we re-investigate the jaw morphology of D. terrelli from a comparative anatomical perspective. Rare cartilaginous elements, preserved attachment sites, and comparisons with other arthrodires suggest the skull of Dunkleosteus contained significantly more cartilage than previously assumed, with many major jaw muscle attachments and cranial articulations located on cartilages.

Short communication: Associations of feeding behavior and milk production in dairy cows.

Identification of the associations of cow feeding behavior with productivity is important for supporting recommendations of strategies that optimize milk yield and composition. The objective of this study was to identify associations between measures of feeding behavior and milk production using data collated from studies of the feeding behavior of lactating dairy cows. A database containing behavior and production data for 132 dairy cow-week observations (mean of 7 d of consecutive data per cow) was assembled from 5 studies. Cows averaged (mean ± standard deviation) 1.8 ± 0.9 lactations, 108.

High-Fat Feeding Improves Anxiety-Type Behavior Induced by Ovariectomy in Rats.

Menopause-induced changes may include increased incidence of both depression/anxiety and obesity. We hypothesized that behavioral changes that may develop after ovarian failure could be related to neurochemical and metabolic aspects affected by this condition and that high-fat intake may influence these associations. The present study investigated in rats the effects of ovariectomy, either alone or combined with high-fat diets enriched with either lard or fish-oil, on metabolic, behavioral and monoaminergic statuses, and on gene expression of neuropeptides and receptors involved in energy bala

Feeding behavior of feedlot lambs fed diets containing levels of cassava wastewater.

In this study, we evaluated the effects of including cassava wastewater in the diet on the feeding behavior of feedlot lambs in 35 male uncastrated Santa Inês × Dorper crossbred lambs at an approximate age of 3 months, with an average live weight of 20.0 ± 3.4 kg. Diets were formulated with hay of cassava shoots (roughage) and a concentrate based on corn and soybean, with a roughage:concentrate ratio of 50:50, plus inclusion of cassava wastewater at the levels of 0, 12, 24, 36, or 48 g/kg of the total diet. Feeding behavior was evaluated between the 46th and 52nd days of the experiment. Increa

Maternal diet influences offspring feeding behavior and fearfulness in the precocial chicken.

BACKGROUND: In chicken, oils in the maternal diet confer a specific scent to the yolk. Embryos are known to perceive and memorize chemosensory signals of the surrounding environment; however, the potential impact of the maternal diet has not previously been investigated. In the present study, we hypothesized that chicken embryos memorize the chemical signals of the maternal diet and that this perceptual learning may orient subsequent feeding behavior of the hatchlings. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Laying hens were fed standard food enriched with 2% menhaden oil (MH group) or 2% soybean oil

Assessment of feeding and mealtime behavior problems in persons with mental retardation.

Feeding and mealtime behavior problems are commonly observed among individuals with developmental disabilities. These problems include, but are not limited to, food refusal, food selectivity, mealtime aggression, rumination, pica, and insufficient feeding skills. Difficulties of this type can be associated with life-threatening consequences of other serious health-related problems. Because of the nature of these problems and the lack or accurate client self-reporting, an interdisciplinary assessment in addition to a thorough behavioral assessment is recommended to ensure the best quality of ca

Feeding behavior and management factors during the transition period in dairy cattle.

Little research has focused specifically on the relationships among feeding behavior, management strategy, and optimal intake by the transition cow. Most information must be extrapolated from studies of cattle at other stages of lactation. The transition period can be divided into two distinct phases: 5 to 7 d prepartum, characterized by a 30% reduction in DMI, and 0 to 21 d postpartum, during which time intake should increase rapidly. Feed restriction can reduce number of daily meals by 50%, but when feed is offered for ad libitum consumption, with consistent time of feeding, access can be li

Vasopressin and glucoprivic-feeding behavior: a new perspective on an 'old' peptide.

The feeding responses induced by systemic administration of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) and paraventricular hypothalamic injection of norepinephrine were assessed in Brattleboro rats deficient in vasopressin (VP). Controlling for the non-specific complications of diabetes insipidus, it was found that Brattleboro rats have a deficient 2-DG-feeding response, but an essentially normal noradrenergic-feeding response. Specific carbohydrate appetite abnormalities were also demonstrated. It is argued that VP influences 2-DG feeding by mobilizing endogenous energy stores following its acute release from

[Relationship among feeding behavior and cariogenic potential in early childhood. A review].

INTRODUCTION: Feeding behavior encompasses a set of individual and group actions related to food use and consumption. Analyzing these dietary patterns serves a crucial tool for obtaining precise and relevant data to assess the dental and nutritional status of a population. We aimed to examine the relationship between dietary behaviors and their cariogenic potential in early childhood through a narrative review of scientific literature published among 2017 and 2024. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medline, LILACS, and ScienceDirect databases were searched using Boolean operators to combine search terms

Ghrelin Signaling Affects Feeding Behavior, Metabolism, and Memory through the Vagus Nerve.

Vagal afferent neuron (VAN) signaling sends information from the gut to the brain and is fundamental in the control of feeding behavior and metabolism [1]. Recent findings reveal that VAN signaling also plays a critical role in cognitive processes, including affective motivational behaviors and hippocampus (HPC)-dependent memory [2-5]. VANs, located in nodose ganglia, express receptors for various gut-derived peptide signals; however, the function of these receptors with regard to feeding behavior, metabolism, and memory control is poorly understood. We hypothesized that VAN-mediated processes

Chemogenetic manipulation of parasympathetic neurons (DMV) regulates feeding behavior and energy metabolism.

Parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) innervates with several peripheral organs such as liver, pancreas and regulates energy metabolism. However, the direct role of PNS on food intake has been poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated the role of parasympathetic nervous system in regulation of feeding by chemogenetic methods. Adeno associated virus carrying DREADD (designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs) infused into the target brain region by stereotaxic surgery. The stimulatory hM3Dq or inhibitory hM4Di DREADD was over-expressed in selective population of do

Cannabinoid Receptor Signaling in Central Regulation of Feeding Behavior: A Mini-Review.

Cannabinoids are lipid messengers that modulate a variety of physiological processes and modify the generation of specific behaviors. In this regard, the cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) represents the most relevant target molecule of cannabinoids so far. One main function of central CB1 signaling is to maintain whole body energy homeostasis. Thus, cannabinoids functionally interact with classical neurotransmitters in neural networks that control energy metabolism and feeding behavior. The promotion of CB1 signaling can increase appetite and stimulate feeding, while blockade of CB1 suppresses

Feeding behavior of feedlot-finished young bulls fed diets containing peanut cake.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the feeding behavior of feedlot-finished young bulls fed diets containing peanut cake instead of soybean meal. A total of 32 Nellore young bulls with an initial body weight of 390 ± 43.5 kg were distributed in a completely randomized design. The animals were individually housed in stalls and fed Tifton 85 hay with four concentrate mixtures containing 0, 33, 66, or 100% peanut cake substituting for soybean meal. The diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous (with 15% crude protein) and isocaloric (with 65% total digestible nutrients), with a 40:60 fo

Modification of the feeding behavior of dairy cows through live yeast supplementation.

The objective of this study was to determine if the feeding behavior of dairy cows is modified through live yeast supplementation. Twelve lactating Holstein dairy cows (2 primiparous and 10 multiparous) were individually exposed, in a replicated crossover design, to each of 2 treatment diets (over 35-d periods): (1) a control TMR and (2) a control TMR plus 1 × 10(10) cfu/head per day of live yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077; Levucell SC20; Lallemand Animal Nutrition, Montreal, QC, Canada). Sleep deprivation-induced gnawing-relationship to changes in feeding behavior in rats.

We have recently reported that food spillage increases during sleep deprivation in rats, which may lead to an overestimation of food intake in this condition. The objective of this study was to verify whether sleep deprivation induces an increase in gnawing behavior that could account for increased food spillage and apparent increase in food intake. We introduced wood blocks as objects for gnawing and determined the effects of their availability on food consumption and food spillage during sleep deprivation. Wood block availability reduced the amount of food removed from hoppers and decreased

Genetic influences on mosquito feeding behavior and the emergence of zoonotic pathogens.

The feeding behavior of vectors influences the likelihood of pathogen invasion and the exposure of humans to vector-borne zoonotic pathogens. We used multilocus microsatellite genetic typing of an introduced mosquito vector and DNA sequencing of mosquito blood meals to determine the impact of hybrid ancestry on feeding behavior and the emergence of West Nile virus (WNV). The probability of ancestry of Culex pipiens mosquitoes from two bionomically divergent forms, form molestus and form pipiens, influenced the probability that they fed on humans but did not explain a late summer feeding shift

Characteristics of depressive behavior induced by feeding thiamine-deficient diet in mice.

We produced thiamine-deficient (TD) mice by TD diet treatment. The growth curve of mice on TD feeding was sharply increased until on the 10th day and subsequently the body weight gradually decreased. The mortality rate in mice was about 67% on the 30th day after the start of TD feeding. We performed the forced swimming test on the 10th and 20th day after the start of TD feeding. The duration of immobility in the forced swimming test was increased on the 20th day of TD feeding. Locomotor activity and motor co-ordination between the pair-fed control group and TD group on the 20th day of TD feedi

Effects of anorectic drugs and prior feeding on food-rewarded runway behavior.

Two treatments that act through central catecholamine pathways and are normally found to be strongly anorectic (d-amphetamine, 1.25 mg/kg and diethylpropion, 5.00 mg/kg) failed to influence either latency to run or running velocity in single trial running for food reward. In contrast, d-fenfluramine (2.5 mg/kg), which normally has similar anorectic potency but acts via a serotoninergic mechanism, significantly increased latency and decreased running velocity. Prior feeding (30 min ad lib access to food) also decreased runway performance to a similar degree. Further studies, using a 3 trial pro
