Rapid Resolution of Non-Effusive Feline Infectious Peritonitis Uveitis with an Oral Adenosine Nucleoside Analogue and Feline Interferon Omega.

This is the first report of a successful treatment of a non-effusive feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) uveitis case using an oral adenosine nucleoside analogue drug and feline interferon omega, and alpha-1 acid glycoprotein (AGP) as an indicator of recovery. A 2-year-old male neutered Norwegian Forest Cat presented with uveitis, keratic precipitates, mesenteric lymphadenopathy and weight loss. The cat was hypergammaglobulinaemic and had a non-regenerative anaemia. Feline coronavirus (FCoV) RNA was detected in a mesenteric lymph node fine-needle aspirate by a reverse-transcriptase polymerase

Diagnostic Value of Detecting Feline Coronavirus RNA and Spike Gene Mutations in Cerebrospinal Fluid to Confirm Feline Infectious Peritonitis.

BACKGROUND: Cats with neurologic feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) are difficult to diagnose. Aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of detecting feline coronavirus (FCoV) RNA and spike (S) gene mutations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). METHODS: The study included 30 cats with confirmed FIP (six with neurological signs) and 29 control cats (eleven with neurological signs) with other diseases resulting in similar clinical signs. CSF was tested for FCoV RNA by 7b-RT-qPCR in all cats. In RT-qPCR-positive cases, S-RT-qPCR was additionally performed to identify spike gene mutations

Applying Supervised Machine Learning to Effusion Analysis for the Diagnosis of Feline Infectious Peritonitis.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a major disease of cats which, unless promptly diagnosed and treated, is invariably fatal. Although it has long been recognised that the condition is the result of an aberrant immune response to infection with feline coronavirus, there remain significant gaps in our understanding of its pathogenesis. Consequently, diagnosis is complex and relies on the combined interpretation of numerous clinical signs and laboratory biomarkers, many of which are non-specific. In the case of effusive FIP, a commonly encountered acute form of the disease where body cavity

Immune Cell Signaling in Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus Infection and Implications for Vaccine Design.

Feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) remains one of the most challenging viral diseases in veterinary medicine, largely owing to the absence of a consistently effective and safe vaccine. Despite widespread feline coronavirus infection, only a subset of infected cats progresses to feline infectious peritonitis, indicating that host immune responses are key determinants of disease outcomes. Accumulating evidence indicates that disease severity is driven not only by viral replication but also by macrophage- and monocyte-centered immune signaling, leading to excessive inflammation and system

Imipramine inhibits feline infectious peritonitis virus infection by targeting host cholesterol metabolism via NPC1.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a fatal disease caused by FIP virus (FIPV), currently lacks effective vaccines and treatments. Imipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant with known broad-spectrum antiviral properties, was investigated for its efficacy against FIPV. Our in vitro studies demonstrated that imipramine inhibits FIPV infection in a dose-dependent manner, with a high selectivity index (SI = 291) and maximal effect when administered during co-treatment. Time-of-addition assays revealed that imipramine acts at multiple stages, interfering with both viral entry and replication. Mechani

Cepharanthine: A promising natural compound against feline infectious peritonitis virus infection and associated inflammation.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a fatal disease in cats caused by feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), has limited treatment options and lacks effective vaccines. Cepharanthine (CEP), a natural isoquinoline alkaloid, possesses many medicinal properties, including antiviral activities. However, the role of CEP in management of FIPV infection remains poorly understood. Here, we identified that CEP had a potent ability to inhibit FIPV infection in vitro. CEP significantly inhibited FIPV infection when administered at different times, with co-treatment showing the most significant inhi

Pathological findings and patterns of feline infectious peritonitis in the respiratory tract of cats.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is an important cause of death in cats. Thoracic manifestations are less common than abdominal manifestations, and FIP-associated respiratory disease is poorly documented. This study aimed to investigate pathological findings in the respiratory tract of cats with FIP and the occurrence and distribution of feline coronavirus antigen in the respiratory tract using immunohistochemistry. A retrospective study was carried out on 112 cats with FIP, of which 66 had inflammatory histological lesions in the respiratory tract (58.9%) and were included in this study. T

Toxoplasmal meningoencephalitis in a 14 week-old shelter cat with presumed feline infectious peritonitis.

Toxoplasmal meningoencephalitis is a sporadic condition that is often misdiagnosed antemortem, frequently resulting in euthanasia especially in resource-limited settings. Here we report a case of a 7-week-old female domestic shorthair cat from an animal shelter who presented in a compromised condition and continued to display clinical signs consistent with a "failure to thrive" kitten. Weight loss and decreased activity were observed, and later on, neurological dysfunction became apparent. Based on clinical signs, non-effusive feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) was strongly suspected. Other p

Successful treatment of a South African cat with effusive feline infectious peritonitis with remdesivir.

Historically, feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) has been considered almost invariably fatal. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has fuelled research in coronavirus pathophysiology and treatment. An unintended consequence is that we now have an effective treatment accessible for FIP. This paper reports on the successful resolution of immunohistochemistry-confirmed effusive FIP in an adolescent cat in South Africa following monotherapy with remdesivir at 4.9-5.6 mg/kg daily for 80 days.

Relationship between Uveal Inflammation and Viral Detection in 30 Cats with Feline Infectious Peritonitis.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) virus is the most common infectious cause of uveitis in cats. Confirmatory diagnosis is usually only reached at postmortem examination. The relationship between the histologic inflammatory pattern, which depends on the stage of the disease, and the likelihood of detection of the viral antigen and/or RNA has not been investigated. We hypothesized that viral detection rate by either immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization or RT-qPCR is dependent upon the predominant type of uveal inflammatory response (i.e., pyogranulomatous vs. plasmacytic). Thus, the aim

Multiplex fluorescent immunocytochemistry for the diagnosis of feline infectious peritonitis: Determining optimal storage conditions.

BACKGROUND: Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal disease of cats that can be very difficult to definitively diagnose antemortem. Multiplex fluorescent immunocytochemical (MF-ICC) assays are emerging as useful diagnostic tests in veterinary medicine, particularly for fluid samples. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop and optimize an MF-ICC assay to detect feline coronavirus within macrophages, with the primary goal of determining the allowable/recommended sample storage conditions for clinical use of this assay. METHODS: A feline macrophage cell line was infected with the FIP virus. Foll

A retrospective study of the neuropathology and diagnosis of naturally occurring feline infectious peritonitis.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is one of the most important viral diseases of cats worldwide. Our study describes the neuropathology and the diagnostic features of 26 cases of FIP in domestic cats. The average age of affected individuals was 11.8 mo, and there was no sex or breed predisposition. Clinical neurologic signs were noted in 22 cases, and rabies was clinically suspected in 11 cases. Twenty cats had lesions in multiple organs, and 6 cats had lesions only in the brain. Gross neuropathologic changes occurred in 15 cases and consisted of hydrocephalus (10 cases), cerebellar herniati

Obstructive colonic FGESF associated with feline infectious peritonitis in a cat: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a severe immune-mediated disease that develops in a small proportion of cats infected with feline coronavirus (FCoV). Clinical manifestations are variable and most commonly involve systemic inflammatory disease with or without effusion. Gastrointestinal signs, including vomiting or diarrhea, may be observed; however, focal intestinal lesions leading to mechanical obstruction are rare. Histopathologic changes resembling feline gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia (FGESF) have only rarely been reported in association with FIP. CA

Diagnosis of feline infectious peritonitis using the cell tube block technique - a pilot study.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is caused by a feline coronavirus (FCoV) and it is one of the most important viral diseases of cats. Recently, new drugs have been developed and used to face the inexorable fatal prognosis of FIP when untreated. More than ever, a definitive ante-mortem diagnosis is crucial to identify the cats that would benefit from antiviral treatment and to avoid euthanasia of unaffected animals. Identification of FCoV in macrophages using immunohistochemistry (IHC) is the gold standard method for diagnosing FIP. In this pilot study, the role of IHC applied to cell tube b

Perirenal cyst-like lesions associated with feline infectious peritonitis in a Maine Coon cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 7-month-old intact male Maine Coon cat was presented because of intermittent pyrexia, hyporexia and lethargy. On abdominal palpation, both kidneys appeared to be enlarged with an irregular shape. Haematology and serum biochemistry showed anaemia, hypoalbuminaemia and hyperproteinaemia. Ultrasonographic findings included multiple perirenal cyst-like lesions, heterogenous cortices with cortical striation and a medullary band sign, as well as renomegaly. The cat was euthanased and a limited necropsy of the kidneys revealed pyogranulomatous lesions, which were confirmed to be relat
