Chemical Immobilization Effects on Cougar (Felis concolor) Movement.

Capturing and handling wildlife is a common practice for both management and research. As telemetry use has become common, the need to capture and chemically immobilize wildlife has increased. Understanding how long the effects of immobilizing agents last after releasing the animal is often poorly understood but needed to ensure that analyses use data that reflect natural behavior. Between 2016 and 2021, 60 cougars (Puma concolor) were chemically immobilized with medetomidine, zolazepam, and tiletamine (MZT) and collared across west-central Alberta, Canada, 27 of which were individuals being r

[Worldwide human zoonotic cryptosporidiosis caused by Cryptosporidium felis].

Cryptosporidium is an important enteric pathogen worldwide distributed causing diarrhoeal illness in humans and animals. Identifying Cryptosporidium species using conventional criteria, such as oocyst morphology, is inadequate. The advent of molecular techniques has conducted to characterize different species and genotypes of Cryptosporidium infecting humans. The vast majority of human cases of cryptosporidiosis in the world are caused by both species, Cryptosporidium hominis and Cryptosporidium parvum. However other species including Cryptosporidium felis can infect humans too. In this review

[Rochalimaea henselae, Afipia felis and cat-scratch disease].

Several years ago, Rochalimaea henselae has emerged as an agent of bacillary angiomatosis, bacillary peliosis and recurrent septicaemia that generally occur in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus. An aetiologic role in cat scratch disease is also suspected widely on the basis of a serologic survey. Its slow growth and its culture requirement explain that this pathogen, a gram-negative bacterium, could not be isolated until 1990. Moreover, blood and tissue samples request lysis and crushing for recovering by culture. The clinical, histological, microbiological and pathogenic asp

Seasonal occurrence of Ctenocephalides felis felis and Ctenocephalides canis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) infesting dogs and cats in an urban area in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

The seasonal occurrence of Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouché and Ctenocephalides canis (Curtis) infestation on dogs and cats in Cuernavaca City in Mexico, was determined by examining 1,803 dogs and 517 cats at two veterinary clinics during 1995-1997. The overall flea infestation was 30.3 and 30.1% for dogs and cats, respectively. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in percentage of infestation among years for both hosts. The infestation was somewhat higher in spring, summer, and autumn than in winter, but no statistical differences was found among seasons (P > 0.05) for both pet

Evaluation of pharmacokinetics and efficacy of ivermectin following oral administration in dogs against experimental infection of Ctenocephalides felis felis and Rhipicephalus sanguineus.

With the increasing number of pets in home the human-animal relationship is increasingly close and care about control disease growing. Ivermectin (IVM) is frequently used because its proven safety. IVM is recommended for the treatment of demodectic scabies and prevention of heartworm in dogs, but informally is extremely used to control of Ctenocephalides felis felis and Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The aim of this study is evaluate the use of IVM in dogs, by the oral route at 0.6μg/kg dose, against experimental infection of these parasites using the construction of the plasma concentration curve

Clinical efficacy and safety of a spray formulation containing carvacrol and eugenol against Rhipicephalus linnaei and Ctenocephalides felis felis in artificially infested dogs.

The control of ectoparasites in dogs is challenged by resistance and the environmental impacts of synthetic pesticides, driving the search for plant-based alternatives. This study evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of a spray formulation containing carvacrol (10%) and eugenol (10%) against experimental infestations by the tick Rhipicephalus linnaei and the flea Ctenocephalides felis felis in dogs. Sixteen Beagles were randomly allocated to a treated group (TG, n = 8) and an untreated control group (CG, n = 8). The animals were artificially infested on days -2, + 5, and + 12, and parasi

AA-amyloidosis in cats (Felis catus) housed in shelters.

Systemic AA-amyloidosis is a protein-misfolding disease characterized by fibril deposition of serum amyloid-A protein (SAA) in several organs in humans and many animal species. Fibril deposits originate from abnormally high serum levels of SAA during chronic inflammation. A high prevalence of AA-amyloidosis has been reported in captive cheetahs and a horizontal transmission has been proposed. In domestic cats, AA-amyloidosis has been mainly described in predisposed breeds but only rarely reported in domestic short-hair cats. Aims of the study were to determine AA-amyloidosis prevalence in dead

Direct injection of Amblyomma americanum ticks with Cytauxzoon felis.

Cytauxzoon felis is a tick-borne hemoprotozoan parasite that causes life-threatening disease in domestic cats in the United States. Currently, the platforms for C. felis research are limited to natural or experimental infection of domestic cats. This study aims to develop an alternative model by infecting Amblyomma americanum ticks with C. felis via direct injection. Amblyomma americanum adults were injected with C. felis-infected feline erythrocytes through two routes: directly into the digestive tract through the anal pore (IA injection), or percutaneously into the tick hemocoel (IH injectio

Chlamydophila felis infection. ABCD guidelines on prevention and management.

OVERVIEW: Chlamydophila felis is a Gram-negative bacterium and its primary target is the conjunctiva. The bacterium does not survive outside the host. INFECTION: Transmission requires close contact between cats; ocular secretions are probably the most important body fluid for infection. Most cases occur in cats under 1 year of age. Chlamydophila felis is the infectious organism most frequently associated with conjunctivitis. DISEASE SIGNS: Unilateral ocular disease generally progresses to become bilateral. There can be intense conjunctivitis with extreme hyperaemia of the nictitating membran

[Sporotrichosis of the domestic cat (Felis catus): human transmission].

A case of sporotrichosis transmitted by cat to a veterinarian hospital employees is reported. Inquiry at domiciliary area of the cat's owner revealed two other presumable cases of human sporotrichosis transmitted by cats, and confirmed the diagnosis (by culture of Sporothrix schenckii) of disease in three other domestic cats. Feline sporotrichosis is characterized by ulcerative, cutaneous lesions and systemic dissemination, which invariably cause animal's death. The transmission of sporotrichosis to other animals and humans is enhanced by the great amount of fungus present in cat's lesions.

Anti-complement and anticoagulant activities from the salivary glands and gut of Ctenocephalides felis felis (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) in wild and domestic Carnivora hosts.

Ctenocephalides felis felis is an ectoparasite of global relevance, causing impacts at the One Health interface. The process of hematophagy depends on evolutionary adaptations, in which arthropods have evolved inhibitors of host hemostatic and immunological responses, mediated by salivary and intestinal molecules. However, fleas remain among the least studied hematophagous arthropod taxa, with their salivary and intestinal antihemostatic and immunomodulatory mechanisms still largely unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the interactions of the salivary glands and intestine of C. feli

Exposure of Domestic Cats (Felis catus) to Rodenticidal Compounds.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are highly effective, but can be of environmental concern due to primary and secondary non-target exposure, with the latter possible being relevant to domestic cats. Therefore, liver residues of ARs and an alternative rodenticide, α-chloralose, were systematically monitored in domestic cats for the first time in the current study. In 2021 and 2022, the carcasses of 99 cats were collected in Slovenia and liver residues were measured by using solid supported liquid-liquid extraction and LC-MS/MS. The results show that 65% of cats carried at least one rodenticide.

Histologic identification of intraocular Cytauxzoon felis in three cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: A 5-month-old male intact domestic shorthair (DSH) cat (cat 1), a 1-year-old male neutered DSH cat (cat 2) and a 1.5-year-old female spayed DSH cat (cat 3) were submitted for gross necropsy after acute death, with the clinical suspicion of cytauxzoonosis. All three cats displayed signs of rapidly progressive clinical deterioration, including lethargy, anorexia, and hyper- or hypothermia. Cat 1 was euthanized owing to the grave prognosis for survival, whereas cats 2 and 3 were found dead 1-4 days after the onset of clinical signs. Remains were submitted to the Kansas State

Rickettsia felis and Bartonella henselae in fleas from Lebanon.

A total of 155 fleas collected in 2009 in Lebanon from 16 cats (104 Ctenocephalides felis specimens, 1 C. canis specimen) and 2 dogs (50 C. canis specimens) were tested for the presence of Rickettsia spp. and Bartonella spp. using molecular methods, including real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), regular PCR, and sequencing of amplified PCR products. Rickettsia felis, the agent of the emerging flea-borne spotted fever in humans, was identified in 17 (16%) C. felis cat fleas. Bartonella henselae, an agent of cat scratch disease, was identified in three (2.9%) C. felis. Our res

Cat scratch disease: the rare role of Afipia felis.

Since its isolation in 1988, Afipia felis has been associated with cat scratch disease (CSD) in only one report and its role in CSD has been questioned. We have cultured A. felis from a lymph node of a patient with CSD. 16S rRNA gene sequencing, DNA relatedness studies, fatty acid analysis, and PCR of the A. felis ferredoxin gene showed that the isolate is identical to the previously reported A. felis isolate. To determine the role of A. felis in CSD, PCR of the 16S rRNA gene followed by hybridizations with specific probes were performed with lymph node specimens from CSD patients. All 32 spec
