INTRODUCTION: Rotationplasty had been reported as a salvage procedure for many decades. However, this procedure has not been used for unplanned fixation for pathological fracture of osteosarcoma. Therefore, this is the first case report of rotationplasty for this particular indication. Case Presentation. We report a case of a 22-year-old Thai female patient who sustained a supracondylar fracture at the distal femur and underwent a surgical treatment by open reduction and internal fixation with a distal femoral locking plate and screws. Follow-up radiographic imaging revealed that there were ab

Femoral physeal fractures have been rarely reported as a birth-related injury. As the plain radiograph findings are variable, the diagnosis may be challenging. In this case report, we describe a male neonate presenting with periosteal elevation at the left distal femur. A radiological evaluation demonstrated posteromedial displacement of the distal femoral epiphysis. The final diagnosis was subperiosteal hemorrhage due to a distal femoral physeal fracture.

BACKGROUND: Femoral fracture may predispose the knee to the development of post-traumatic arthritis by either a direct intra-articular injury or residual limb malalignment. Malunion, intra-articular osseous defects, limb malalignment, retained internal fixation devices, and compromised surrounding soft tissues may in turn affect the outcome of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in these patients. The aim of our study was to evaluate the result of TKA in patients with previous distal femoral fracture.
METHODS: The results of 48 cemented condylar total knee arthroplasties, performed between 1980 to

BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic fractures represent a major public health problem, particularly in older adults. Distal femur fractures, although less frequent, have also been associated with substantial mortality, with rates approaching those of hip fractures. However, direct comparisons between both entities remain limited and heterogeneous, and it is unclear whether distal femur fractures carry a comparable prognostic burden.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational cohort study including surgically treated patients aged ≥65 years with proximal or distal femoral fractures between 2013

Treatment strategies for periprosthetic distal femoral fracture depend on the type of fracture, level with respect to the prosthesis, and prosthesis fixation. The usual treatment is internal fixation by nail or locking plate. This can be more difficult when the fracture is close to the joint, is destabilizing the prosthesis or is associated with reduced bone stock, and implant exchange should be considered, depending on the patient's health status. The aim is to obtain the fastest possible recovery while limiting complications and minimizing surgery time for often frail and elderly patients. T

Periprosthetic distal femoral fractures are occurring in increasing numbers. There is limited research into outcomes and mortality. This study aimed to assess the 1 year mortality and complications requiring further surgery in the two years following a presentation with a periprosthetic distal femoral fracture. A retrospective case series of periprosthetic distal femoral fractures at a single trauma centre was undertaken. All patients were included who presented with a distal femur periprosthetic fracture between 1st January and 2008 and 31st March 2015. 60 patients with 49 females and 11 male

Fractures of the epiphyseal plate are considered rare when compared with the more prevalent injuries found in competitive sports, but the complications associated with this type of trauma are a major concern. The factors affecting the success or failure of healing include the severity of injury, patient age, and the type and expedience of treatment. This case study examines the clinical presentation and treatment of a 15-yr-old high school football player who sustained a displaced, distal femoral epiphyseal Salter II fracture. Primary treatment consisted of nonmanipulative, nonweight bearing k

PURPOSE: Comminution is an aspect of periprosthetic distal femoral fractures (PDFFs) that can influence postoperative outcomes and treatment selection, but is not included in current classification systems. We propose a new classification system for PDFFs based on comminution and cortical reads. This study aims to prove its reliability and efficacy to predict fracture severity and guide treatment.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients treated with single or dual locking plates for PDFFs was performed. Two fellowship-trained orthopedic joint reconstruction specialists used availabl

BACKGROUND: The treatment of distal femur fractures represents a challenging task. General and local factors, including bone quality, articular surface involvement, fracture comminution, associated soft tissue injuries and ultimately fixation system, all play a role in the final clinical outcome. Current surgical approaches often undermine patellar vascularization and integrity of the extensor apparatus, not guaranteeing sufficient visualization of the medial condyle. This technical note presents the efficacy and safety a new surgical technique to address distal femoral fractures.
METHODS: Th

PURPOSE: This prospective study evaluated the functional outcome and union rates of open distal femoral fractures managed with anatomic lateral locking plates.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients with open distal femur fractures with mean age of 40.8 years (range 20-65 years) were included in the study. Patients with Gustilo-Anderson grade IIIC fractures and those managed with non-locking modalities were excluded. In total, 70.6% (n = 24) of the fractures were Type IIIA and 55.9% (n = 19) were AO/OTA Type C3 fractures. In 23.5% (n = 8) patients, knee spanning external fixator was applied initially

OBJECTIVE: To explore the early effectiveness and advantages of mini-Swashbuckler approach in treatment of distal femoral type C fractures by comparing with Swashbuckler approach.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was made on 43 patients with distal femoral type C fractures between January 2014 and June 2018. Twenty-two patients were treated with open reduction via mini-Swashbuckler approach and internal fixation with less invasive stabilization system (LISS) plate in modified group; and 21 patients were treated with open reduction via Swashbuckler approach and internal fixation with LISS pla

Distal femoral periprosthetic fractures (DFPF) are an increasingly prevalent complication following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), representing a significant challenge to the orthopedic community. As the volume of primary and revision TKA continues to rise globally, a clear understanding of the epidemiological landscape and standardized classification are paramount for appropriate treatment, clinical communication, and research. This review provides a focused analysis of the current epidemiological propensities of DFPF, identifying the specific patient populations and temporal trends that defi

BACKGROUND: The care of distal periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFF) is becoming a major interdisciplinary challenge due to demographic developments. The operative treatment is often performed (depending on the type of fracture) by means of locking plate fixation (LPF), although little data on the clinical outcome exist by now. The aim of the study is to identify risk factors for a poor outcome and increased mortality METHODS: In this retrospective study, 36 cases with distal PFF were examined. Exclusively treatment with LPF were included. Relevant previous illnesses (ASA score, Charlson inde

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of distal femoral fracture in post-polio patients is difficult because the bone is usually osteopenic, small and deformed. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the outcomes of distal femoral fracture in post-polio patients treated by locking compression plates (LCP).
METHODS: The medical records of 19 post-polio patients (mean age 49 years at time of surgery) were reviewed and intraoperative data retrieved. Fracture union and callus formation were evaluated on radiographs taken at each postoperative visit. Functional outcome assessments included range of motion a

The authors retrospectively reviewed 27 consecutive patients with 29 fractures of the distal femur treated with the new retrograde expandable nail. One 10-mm diameter nail that expands to 16 mm was used with the possibility of locking in the condylar area only. Retrieved data included single versus multiple injuries, fracture type, operation time, reaming or nonreaming, hospitalization and healing times, and intra- and postoperative complications. The overall average operation time was 96 (range 40-320) minutes, but only 65 (range 40-120) minutes for isolated fractures. The overall mean hospit

Over the 20-year period from 1965 to 1984, 370 residents of Rochester, Minnesota experienced 402 femoral fractures exclusive of the hip, giving an overall incidence rate of 37.1 per 100,000 person-years (95% confidence interval, 33.4-40.8). Of these, 54 were subtrochanteric and 210 were diaphyseal, while 123 involved the distal femur and 15 were at unspecified femoral sites. Fifty-eight percent of these fractures were caused by severe trauma. The incidence of femoral fractures due to severe trauma was greatest in young patients, especially for diaphyseal fractures, and showed a male excess. On

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the knee account for about 6% of all trauma admissions. While its management is mostly focused on fracture treatment, it is not the only factor that defines the final outcome.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to study objective and subjective outcomes after proximal tibial versus distal femoral fractures in terms of knee instability and health-related quality of life.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective, cross-sectional, cohort study was carried out on 80 patients with either isolated proximal tibial (n = 42) or distal femoral (n = 38) fractures, who underwent open
