Nerve growth factor is expressed in rat femoral vein.

PURPOSE: Entubulization is a well known method of nerve repair for defects too large to be reconstructed by direct suturing without tension. Vein grafts and alloplastic tubes have been used for entubulization in peripheral and cranial nerves, but the mechanism by which they promote healing is poorly understood. The overall hypothesis of this laboratory is that nerve growth factor (NGF) plays an important role in nerve regeneration after entubulization with a vein graft. The purpose of this pilot study was to localize NGF protein expression in the rat femoral vein. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sciat

Autogenous aortoiliac/femoral reconstruction from superficial femoral-popliteal veins: feasibility and durability.

PURPOSE: Autogenous aortoiliac/femoral reconstruction with superficial femoral-popliteal veins (SFPVs) has been successfully used to treat prosthetic infection and failure, but outcome data are scant. In this prospective, observational study, we hypothesized that (1) replacement of the aortoiliac/femoral system with SFPVs could be performed with perioperative morbidity and mortality rates equal to those of conventional methods; (2) long-term patency rates would be excellent; (3) limb salvage rates would be correspondingly high; (4) aneurysmal degeneration would not occur, and (5) venous morbid

Stent Compression in Iliac Vein Compression Syndrome Associated with Acute Ilio-Femoral Deep Vein Thrombosis.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to evaluate stent compression in iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS) and to identify its association with stent patency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between May 2005 and June 2014, after stent placement for the treatment of IVCS with acute ilio-femoral deep vein thrombosis, follow-up CT venography was performed in 48 patients (35 women, 13 men; age range 23-87 years; median age 56 years). Using follow-up CT venography, the degree of the stent compression was calculated and used to divide patients into two groups. Possible factors associated with stent compres

A prospective safety study of femoral vein versus nonfemoral vein catheterization in patients with burns.

A prospective study was undertaken to determine the safety of femoral vein catheterization in patients with burns. Forty-two patients had a total of 275 catheterizations and were divided into two groups: group 1, femoral vein catheterization = 80 catheters and group 2, nonfemoral vein catheterization = 195 catheters (180 subclavian, 8 internal jugular, and 7 supraclavicular). All catheters were changed to new sites every 48 hours, and dressings were changed every 24 hours. Bacteriologic surveillance was accomplished by submitting the tip and subcutaneous segment of the catheter for semiquantit

Absence of the right iliac vein and an unusual connection between both common femoral veins.

The aim of the study is to report a case of a rare congenital anomaly of the venous system and to emphasize its clinical importance. We describe a case of aplasia of the right common and external iliac veins in a healthy seven-year-old boy who was referred for Doppler ultrasound examination for further evaluation of an abnormal varicosity in the suprapubic region. Colour Doppler ultrasound revealed a dilated, arch-shaped vein. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography showed the absence of the right common iliac vein and external iliac vein. It also clearly demonstrated the aberrant ven

Percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus in interrupted inferior caval vein through femoral vein approach.

Percutaneous closure of the patent arterial duct in patients with interrupted inferior caval vein poses a technical challenge. A 12-year-old girl with a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and interrupted inferior caval vein is described in this report. The diagnosis of interrupted inferior caval vein and azygos continuation was made in the catheterization laboratory. A catheter was advanced and snared in the descending aorta. An exchange wire was advanced through the catheter and snared in the descending aorta. Then, an Amplatzer TorqVue 2 delivery sheath was advanced over the wire from the venous

[Results of vascular repairs in trauma of the femoral veins, iliac veins and the inferior vena cava].

We examined the records of 12 patients operated for lesions of the inferior vena cava, the iliac vein, or the common femoral vein were examined. The results of venous grafts, treatment of the lesions of the posterior inferior vena cava or the supra hepatic vena cava and the permeability after repair of these large vessels was studied. Treatment included simple suture (n = 9), venous patch (lateral iliac vein, n = 1), and venous autografts (common femoral veins, n = 2). For 3 lesions of the posterior or supra-hepatic inferior vena cava, haemostasis was obtain by double clamping (n = 2) or four-

Effect of ligating dogs' arteries and veins on femoral heads.

BACKGROUND: We separately ligated the arteries and veins of dogs to establish a canine femoral head necrosis model, then compared the differences between the outcomes of the two ligation methods on canine femoral heads. METHODS: Twenty-four dogs in this experiment were randomly and evenly sorted into two groups (Group A, the arterial group; and Group B, the venous group). In dogs in Group A, the unilateral deep femoral arteries of the hips were ligated. In dogs in Group B, the unilateral deep femoral veins of the hips were ligated. Two dogs from each group were randomly selected at the 2nd, 4

The Duari hernia and recognition of the femoral vein compression sign.

Femoral hernias can be difficult to diagnose and are at high risk of strangulation. This report is of a rare case of an irreducible femoral hernia containing caecum and appendix presenting as an emergency. To the authors' knowledge, there have only been three cases reported, the first described by Duari. This case was incorrectly diagnosed preoperatively as an inguinal hernia, so the CT diagnosis of femoral hernias is reviewed, in particular demonstrating the radiological use of the femoral vein compression sign.

Leiomyoma of the femoral vein: a case report and review of the literature.

Leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors. A leiomyoma originating from the vein is rare. We describe a primary femoral vein tumor that was diagnosed as an unusual leiomyoma in a 50-year-old woman. It was the first reported leiomyoma in the femoral vein in English studies. We have reviewed the studies on leiomyoma from the blood vessel and summarized their characteristics, therapies, and prognosis.

Use of femoral vein catheters for the assessment of perfusion parameters.

The use of central venous oxygen saturation (SvcO2) and arterial lactate in the diagnosis of severe tissue hypoperfusion is well established, and the optimization of these parameters is currently under investigation, particularly in patients with severe sepsis/septic shock. However, the only place for deep venous puncture or the first choice for puncture is often the femoral vein. Although venous saturation obtained from blood sampling from this catheter, instead of SvcO2, has already been used in the diagnosis of severe tissue hypoperfusion, little is known about the accuracy of the results.

Adjunctive use of the superficial femoral vein for vascular reconstructions.

OBJECTIVE: Although the superficial femoral vein (SFV) is an accepted treatment for aortic graft infections, this conduit also has potential uses in other areas. Herein, we evaluate our experience using the SFV for arterial and venous bypasses and the arteriovenous (AV) fistula for dialysis access. METHODS: Between 1999 and 2011, 42 patients underwent a bypass or a thigh AV fistula using the SFV (31 arterial, four central venous, six AV fistulas, and one common carotid-to-vertebral bypass). Indications for arterial bypass included infected graft (20), critical limb ischemia (nine), and failed

Duplication of the superficial femoral vein: recognition with duplex ultrasonography.

Duplication of the superficial femoral vein (SFV) is a normal variant seen in 20% of contrast phlebograms. Failure to identify thrombus in one limb of a SFV may lead to inappropriate management and subsequent complications. Colour Doppler imaging (CDI) is now the imaging technique of choice in the diagnosis of a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of duplication of the SFV at CDI and to compare this with the known prevalence at contrast phlebography. CDI was performed on 58 healthy volunteers (116 limbs examined). Duplication of the SFV was pres

The structure and growth of valve-pocket thrombi in femoral veins.

The structure of 50 small thrombi in femoral valve pockets and the microscopic contents of 35 apparently empty pockets were studied in an attempt to ascertain the nature of the microscopic nidi from which thrombi form and their manner of growth to visible thrombi. Sixteen thrombi had little or no cellular invasion. Most of these recent structures had two main regions, red areas restricted distally in the pocket by the vein wall, and larger white regions comprising most of the thrombus length and often covering the red areas. Red areas are the early sites of cellular adhesion and invasion and t
