Effect of fenbendazole in water on pigs infected with Ascaris suum in finishing pigs under field conditions.

The husbandry of pigs for meat production is a constantly developing industry. Most studies on the effects of Ascaris suum infection in pigs and its prevention with anthelmintics are over a decade old. We examined the effect of 2.5mg fenbendazole per kg bodyweight administered in drinking water for two consecutive days on A. suum infection 1 and 6 weeks after pigs arrived to fattening units. We hypothesised that the treatment would reduce the presence of A. suum-infections, improve the average daily weight gain of pigs, reduce the percentage of liver rejections in pens by 50% and increase the

Development of benzimidazole resistance in a Haemonchus contortus strain in the Netherlands following fenbendazole treatment of ewes at parturition.

In contrast to observations in former years treatment of ewes after parturition with 5 to 7.5 mg/kg fenbendazole was not fully effective in removing Haemonchus contortus. Comparison of the H contortus populations in the lambs of these ewes and those of untreated ewes later in the year revealed that the treatment resulted in fenbendazole resistance and also in side resistance to other benzimidazoles. Though the faecal egg counts of the treated ewes were low, the prophylactic effect of the treatment on the population build up of H contortus in the lambs was very limited.

Immunization of pigs against Ascaris suum by sequential experimental infections terminated with fenbendazole during larval migration.

Three experimental infections of weaning pigs with 2000 embryonated Ascaris suum eggs each, 11 days apart, followed each time by fenbendazole treatment, produced a significant host response when compared with similar infected or uninfected control pigs as assessed by response to a subsequent challenge with 100 embryonated A. suum eggs. The response elicited from pigs treated with fenbendazole on either 2, 3, and 4 days or, 6, 7, and 8 days after each experimental infection was expressed as a reduction in the number of pigs with A. suum, in the number of worms per pig, in the weight of male and

Fenbendazole resistance in Heterakis gallinarum, the vector of Histomonas meleagridis, on a broiler breeder farm in South Carolina.

Parasites are highly prevalent in poultry; thus, the management of parasites is a key component in the profitable production of poultry. The most common nematode parasite of poultry, Heterakis gallinarum, typically causes no direct pathology but is the vector of Histomonas meleagridis, a highly pathogenic protozoan parasite that causes blackhead disease. There are no approved treatments for H. meleagridis, making control reliant on controlling the helminth vector. In the United States, the benzimidazole anthelmintic fenbendazole (FBZ) is the only approved treatment for H. gallinarum. We were c

Activities of fenbendazole in comparison with albendazole against Echinococcus multilocularis metacestodes in vitro and in a murine infection model.

The current chemotherapeutic treatment of alveolar echinococcosis (AE) in humans is based on albendazole and/or mebendazole. However, the costs of treatment, life-long consumption of drugs, parasitostatic rather than parasiticidal activity of chemotherapy, and high recurrence rates after treatment interruption warrant more efficient treatment options. Experimental treatment of mice infected with Echinococcus multilocularis metacestodes with fenbendazole revealed similar efficacy to albendazole. Inspection of parasite tissue from infected and benzimidazole-treated mice by transmission electron

Efficacy of fenbendazole and milbemycin oxime for treating baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) infected with Trichuris trichiura.

We evaluated the efficacy of fenbendazole (FBZ) and milbemycin oxime (MO) in the treatment of baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis) with naturally acquired Trichuris trichiura infection by comparing fecal egg count reduction (FECR) tests. We assigned 7 baboons, each singly housed and confirmed infected with T. trichiura, to treatment groups of FBZ (n=3) or MO (n=3), or as a control (n=1). All (100%) baboons that received FBZ stopped shedding T. trichiura eggs within 6 d of treatment, and fecal egg counts remained negative at 65 d after treatment. Although the number of T. trichiura eggs shed per

Comparative assessment of the access of albendazole, fenbendazole and triclabendazole to Fasciola hepatica: effect of bile in the incubation medium.

The work reported here describes the comparative ability of albendazole (ABZ), fenbendazole (FBZ) and triclabendazole (TCBZ) to penetrate through the tegument of mature Fasciola hepatica, and the influence of the physicochemical composition of the incubation medium on the drug diffusion process. The data obtained from the trans-tegumental diffusion kinetic studies were complemented with the determination of lipid-to-water partition coefficients (octanol-water) for the benzimidazole (BZD) anthelmintic drugs assayed. Sixteen-week-old F. hepatica were obtained from untreated artificially infected

A re-assessment of the efficacy of febantel (Rintal) and fenbendazole (Panacur) against Strongyloides papillosus in sheep and goats.

An efficacy evaluation using febantel and fenbendazole was carried out against Strongyloides papillosus in sheep and goats in the Grootfontein area of South West Africa/Namibia. Three groups with five sheep and three goats in each group were artificially infested with this species. When the worms had reached the adult stage one group was treated with febantel, the other group with fenbendazole and the third group left as controls. Both anthelmintics were dosed at 5 mg/kg. All animals were sacrificed one week after treatment and total worm-counts carried out. Both anthelmintics were found to be

Differentiating fenbendazole-induced liver injury from immunotherapy hepatitis - the importance of structured causality assessment: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Drug-induced liver injury poses a diagnostic challenge in oncology patients, especially those on immune checkpoint inhibitors, because symptoms often overlap with immune-mediated hepatitis. The increasing use of social media has led people to self-administer veterinary anthelmintics like fenbendazole for cancer, often at high doses and without medical guidance, despite limited data on safety or effectiveness. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of a 47-year-old woman with metastatic colon cancer on nivolumab/relatlimab who developed severe hepatocellular liver injury after increasing h

One-step SPE-UHPLC-MS/MS for simultaneous detection of fenbendazole and metabolites in animal-derived foods.

Fenbendazole (FBZ) is a highly effective antiparasitic agent widely used in veterinary medicine; however, its improper application can lead to residues in edible animal-derived products, posing potential health risks to humans through accumulation via the food chain. This study aimed to establish an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method for the determination of FBZ and metabolites in animal-derived foods. The proposed method involves a one-step solid-phase extraction followed by UHPLC-MS/MS analysis for the simultaneous detection of FBZ, oxf

Estimation of withdrawal interval recommendations following administration of fenbendazole medicated feed to ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus).

INTRODUCTION: Prescribing fenbendazole medicated feed for pheasants in the USA is considered extra-label drug use under CPG Sec 615.115, and a safe estimated withdrawal interval (WDI) must be applied following administration to this minor food-producing species. This study sought to determine the pharmacokinetic and residue depletion profile for fenbendazole and its major metabolites to estimate a WDI for pheasants following fenbendazole administration as an oral medicated feed. METHOD: Pheasants (n = 32) were administered fenbendazole as an oral medicated feed (100 ppm) for 7 days. Fenbendaz

Effects of Fenbendazole-impregnated Feed and Topical Moxidectin during Quarantine on the Gut Microbiota of C57BL/6 Mice.

To protect the biosecurity of research rodent colonies, research institutions frequently require a quarantine period for live animals transferred into their facilities. Quarantine practices often include antibiotic and antiparasitic treatment with drugs such as fenbendazole and macrolide lactones. The influence of these compounds on the resident gut microbiota of mice is unknown, and any effects might subsequently affect model reproducibility. To test the influence of standard quarantine procedures on the composition of the microbiota, C57BL/6 mice, purchased from 2 different commercial suppli
