Oral manifestations of drug therapies in the geriatric patient must be considered in a multifactorial approach. A logical pattern of individual "normality" must be perceived, and variation from this pattern, with the aid of both physical examination and adequate drug history, will enable the clinician to interpret protean manifestations of untoward actions of chemotherapeutic agents in and about the oral cavity.

Over the 17-year period 1969-1985, 2,721 reports of 3,521 suspected adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were submitted to the Danish Committee on ADRs. In doses of 1,200 mg/day or more, ibuprofen is as effective as aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The tolerability and safety of ibuprofen are superior to those of aspirin and compare favorably with those of other NSAIDs. Although additional controlled trials are indicated to determine optimal dose, ibuprofen's excellent therapeutic index establishes it as a useful drug in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Cystoid macular oedema (CMO) is the accumulation of fluid in the central retina (the macula) due to leakage from dilated capillaries. It is the most common cause of poor visual outcome following cataract surgery. The exact cause is unclear. Acute CMO, defined as oedema of less than four months duration, often resolve spontaneously. A rapid and efficient procedure is described for the extraction and analysis of anti-inflammatory drugs in whole blood. Red blood cells were fragmented by sonication and the blood sample extracted by passing through a bonded silica column (Bond-Elut). The adsorbed drugs were washed and eluted followed by analysis by HPLC. Recoveries were in excess of 80% at 5 micrograms/ml concentrations.
