The effects of ferrous and other ions on the abiotic formation of biomolecules using aqueous aerosols and spark discharges.

It has been postulated that the oceans on early Earth had a salinity of 1.5 to 2 times the modern value and a pH between 4 and 10. Moreover, the presence of the banded iron formations shows that Fe(+2) was present in significant concentrations in the primitive oceans. Assuming the hypotheses above, in this work we explore the effects of Fe(+2) and other ions in the generation of biomolecules in prebiotic simulation experiments using spark discharges and aqueous aerosols. These aerosols have been prepared using different sources of Fe(+2), such as FeS, FeCl(2) and FeCO(3), and other salts (alka

Efficient removal of Cs ion by electrochemical adsorption and desorption reaction using NiFe Prussian blue deposited carbon nanofiber electrode.

Prussian blue (PB) analog (NiFe, CoFe, FeFe, and commercial(cPB)) decorated carbon nanofiber (CNF) electrodes were synthesized by the drop casting method in this study to investigate the interaction between PB and CNF for the electrochemical adsorption (EA) and electrochemical desorption (ED) of Cs ion (Cs+). The adhesion of PB on the electrode and the EA and ED of Cs+ were substantially higher when the CNF electrode was used, compared with the fluorine-doped tin oxide supporting electrode. The use of CNF led to the smooth occurrence of EA and ED of Cs+, where the reported efficiency was: NiFe

Ammonium salt production in NH3-CO2-H2O system using a highly selective adsorbent, copper hexacyanoferrate.

Ammonia is a beneficial material that is widely used in agriculture, but its emission into the atmosphere causes air pollution. Recently, Prussian blue (PB) and its analogs (PBA) were found to be ammonia adsorbents with high selectivity and capacity. In this study, we utilized a highly potent PBA adsorbent, copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF), to desorb ammonia and turn it into a reusable form. Because the reported NH3-CO2-H2O system phase diagram suggests the possibility of the recovery of solid NH4HCO3, we examined whether adsorbed ammonia desorbs into the saturated ammonium hydrogencarbonate so

Separation and recovery of ammonium from industrial wastewater containing methanol using copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) electrodes.

Ammonium is typically removed from wastewater by converting it to nitrogen gas using microorganisms, precluding its recovery. Copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) is known to reversibly intercalate alkali cations in aqueous electrolytes due to the Prussian Blue crystal structure. We used this property to create a carbon-based intercalation electrode within an electrochemical cell. Depending on the electrode potential, it can recover NH4+ from wastewater via insertion/regeneration while leaving organics. In the first phase, different binders were evaluated towards creating a stable electrode matrix,

Papillary adenocarcinoma of minor salivary gland origin in a child.

A papillary adenocarcinoma with metastasis occurred in a 5-year-old child. The neoplasm arose on the anterolateral sublingual aspect of the tongue and metastasized to a submandibular lymph node. Histologically, the tumor contained broad glandular papillary projections. The tumor cells were cuboidal and had vesicular, "ground glass" nuclei. Colloidlike material was found within the stroma and lumen of the glands. To determine whether the papillary adenocarcinoma was of minor salivary gland or ectopic thyroid in origin, ultrastructural, histochemical, and immunohistochemical techniques were appl

Methods of heavy metal electron microscopic histochemistry applied to frog lung surfactant.

Four heavy metal staining methods have been applied to frog lung surfactant. Among them, the iodoplatinate method is the only one that almost exclusively visualizes the phospholipid moiety being produced in the lamellated bodies of the pulmonary epithelial cells and forming the backbone of organized structures within the extracellular lining layer. The other three techniques-ruthenium red-osmium tetroxide, osmium tetroxide-ferrocyanide, acidic phosphotungstic acid in chromatic (Rambourg technique)--more or less give electron contrast to glycoproteins and to a lesser extent to the hydrophilic p

Prussian Blue Nanozyme-Based Dry-Dipstick Reflectometry for Multiplex Detection of Low Molecular Weight Metabolites.

Chronic diseases (CDs) and their associated hepatic and renal dysfunctions pose grim global health challenges, severely compromising quality of life while increasing morbidity and mortality rates. In China, a big bottleneck in effective CD management lies in the lack of affordable and efficient point-of-care testing (POCT) methods at the primary care level. To address this, we developed a Prussian blue (PB) nanozyme-based dry dipstick reflectometric platform for probing key metabolic markers associated with hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hyperlipidemia. Cyanide within gold mine waste of the free state goldfields: A geochemical modelling approach.

Cyanide, which remains the preferred chemical used in the gold extraction process, has the potential to be disposed of on goldmine tailings. South Africa has nine goldfields, producing approximately a third of the world's gold to date. The cyanide interacts with metals in the tailings environment, where Prussian blue [Formula: see text] and Turnbull's blue [Formula: see text] are among these. In previous studies, Prussian blue or Turnbull's blue have been found as a blue substance in tailings material. PHREEQC modelling software was used adding the mineralogical data from 16 tailings samples f

Polyethylenimine-mediated controlled synthesis of Prussian blue-gold nanohybrids for biomedical applications.

We report on polyethylenimine (PEI)-mediated synthesis of Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs); the formation of PBNP-AuNP nanohybrids with a remarkable change in Prussian blue character as a function of gold cation concentration was also considered. It was shown that PEI-protected polycrystalline PBNPs can be synthesized in an acidic medium from the precursor potassium ferricyanide [K3Fe(CN)6] at 60 °C. Since PEI also enables the controlled formation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in the presence of formaldehyde under ambient conditions, nanohybrids of PBNPs and A

pH-dependent Release Matrix Oral Formulation of Prussian Blue to Improve its Efficacy as an Internal Decorporation Agent.

BACKGROUND: Prussian Blue (PB) is available as conventional release dosage form "Radiogardase" with effective daily dose of 3-10 g (very high). The target site is the duodenum, where it inhibits the enterohepatic circulation of Cs & Tl ions, enhancing their fecal excretion. OBJECTIVE: To enhance efficacy, target release, reduce the dose and side effects, oral pH-dependent matrix formulation of PB based on in-situ gelation of sodium alginate along with calcium salts was formulated and evaluated. METHODS: Different combinations of matrix granules were formulated and optimized. The optimized on

Is Perls Prussian Blue Stain for Hemosiderin a Useful Adjunct in the Diagnosis of Vasculitic Neuropathies?

BACKGROUND: Perls Prussian blue stain (PPB) for hemosiderin, a marker of vascular injury is often employed as an adjunct in the diagnosis of vasculitic neuropathies. However, inflammation/vascular injury is also seen in leprosy, immune mediated, paraproteinemic, diabetic neuropathies, etc. The frequency of detection of hemosiderin in these neuropathies and its utility in diagnosis of vasculitis has not been explored. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated 208 peripheral nerve biopsies for hemosiderin deposits by PPB stain in vasculitis (78) and compared with inflammatory/immune neuropathies [leprous neuriti

Prussian blue analogues for CO(2) and SO(2) capture and separation applications.

Adsorption isotherms of pure gases present in flue gas including CO(2), N(2), SO(2), NO, H(2)S, and water were studied using prussian blues of chemical formula M(3)[Co(CN)(6)](2).nH(2)O (M = Co, Zn) using an HPVA-100 volumetric gas analyzer and other spectroscopic methods. All the samples were characterized, and the microporous nature of the samples was studied using the BET isotherm. These materials adsorbed 8-10 wt % of CO(2) at room temperature and 1 bar of pressure with heats of adsorption ranging from 200 to 300 Btu/lb of CO(2), which is lower than monoethanolamine (750 Btu/lb of CO(2)) a

Thallium toxicity and the role of Prussian blue in therapy.

Thallium salts have been used as medicinal agents, as key ingredients in a variety of manufacturing processes, and as a potent rodenticide. Additionally, environmental concerns are growing, as thallium is a waste product of coal combustion and the manufacturing of cement. Thallium salts are rapidly and nearly completely absorbed by virtually all routes, with gastrointestinal exposure being the most common route to produce toxicity. Thallium enters cells by a unique process governed by its similarity in charge and ionic radius to potassium. Although the exact mechanism of toxicity has not been

Graphite-polystyrene composite with enhanced electrochemical and electroanalytical performance.

A new composite electrode (G-PSE) was developed from graphite powder and expanded polystyrene (EPS, Styrofoam) by simply dissolving the foam in chloroform, incorporating the graphite particles under mixing and volatilizing the solvent at 80 °C. The resulting rigid black composite can be softened with acetone and so it can easily be molded to any shape, e.g., into a PTFE tube with an electric contact, to build the electrode. A 75% graphite content (w/w) was found appropriate for preparing the G-PSE with a working potential similar to that of carbon paste electrodes, superior mechanical stabilit

Iron deposits and multiple sclerosis.

A recent publication described autopsy samples from five brains in which positive staining for iron was observed as surrounding demyelinated plaques. Because this has not been previously reported, autopsy material from 13 patients who were being followed up at the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Clinic, University Hospital, The University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, was reviewed. A total of 32 paraffin-embedded blocks containing demyelinated plaques of varying age were sectioned and stained using a standard acid ferrocyanide technique (Peris' test) for iron. Microscopic examination failed to

Protocol for Quantitative Estimation of Hydrogen Cyanide Production from Bacteria.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is a volatile, nitrogen-containing secondary metabolite produced by various bacterial species, primarily during the idiophase of growth under nutrient-limiting or competitive conditions. It plays a significant ecological role as a biocontrol agent by inhibiting the respiratory enzymes of plant pathogens and modulating microbial competition in the rhizosphere. Although protocols for detecting HCN production have existed for over a century, they have largely remained qualitative and are rarely optimized for quantitative assessment. This is mainly due to the volatile nature

Transmetallation by Halogen-Cyanide Metathesis in Water: Application to Cyanide Ion-Free Palladium Catalyzed Cyanation.

Aryl nitriles are important synthons in organic chemistry, yet conventional cyanation methods mostly generate free cyanide ions, creating acute safety hazards and wastewater contamination issues. We report a Pd-catalyzed cyanide ion-free cyanation of aryl halides featuring a transmetallation potentially via halogen-cyanide (CN-) metathesis using potassium ferrocyanide as a bound CN- reservoir. Mechanistic studies, CN--sensing strip tests, and IR spectroscopy confirm that no free CN⁻ is released at any stage, eliminating toxicity and downstream CN- liabilities. A flow-through microfluidic system for the detection of circulating melanoma cells.

We report the fabrication of polyaniline nanofiber (PANI)-modified screen-printed electrode (PANI/SPE) incorporated in a poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic channel for the detection of circulating tumor cells. We employed this device to detect melanoma skin cancer cells through specific immunogenic binding of cell surface biomarker melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) to anti-MC1R antibody. The antibody-functionalized PANI/SPE was used in batch-continuous flow-through fashion. An aqueous cell suspension of ferri/ferrocyanide at a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min was passed over the immunosensor, which

[A histochemical study of acid glycosaminoglycans on normal and pathological cartilage, ligaments and several other connective tissues].

Histochemical estimation of acid glycosaminoglycan was critically re-evaluated, using the meniscus, intervertebral disc, ossified yellow ligament, ganglion, Dupuytren's fascia and several other tissues. Each tissue was stained with toluidine blue, alcian blue, high iron diamine, low iron diamine, aldehyde fuchsin and dialyzed iron-ferrocyanide. Digestion techniques for GAG were used in these staining methods, and the effects of protease inhibitors (PI) on digestion were also examined. In this study, the optimal temperature for digestion with Streptomyces hyaluronidase was between 37 degrees C

Machine learning-assisted colorimetric sensor array using a microbially synthesized Prussian blue nanozyme with enhanced POD-like activity for discriminating sulfur-containing metal salts.

Sulfur-containing metal salts (SCMs) are widely used as food additives, but their excess residues or chemical interconversion during processing may generate more toxic species, posing significant health risks. However, conventional analytical methods for SCMs suffer from high cost, time-consuming procedures, and reliance on sophisticated instrumentation. Herein, we report a nanozyme-based colorimetric sensor array constructed from a microbial synthesized Prussian blue nanozyme (Bio-PB) with intrinsically enhanced peroxidase-like activity. The array integrates Bio-PB with three chromogenic subs
