A cataluminescence gas sensor for ammonium sulfide based on Fe(3)O(4)-carbon nanotubes composite.

In the present work, Fe(3)O(4)-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite was explored as a sensing material candidate for ammonium sulfide. Intense chemiluminescence emission can be observed during the catalytic oxidation of ammonium sulfide on the surface of Fe(3)O(4)-CNTs composite. Based on this phenomenon, a selective and sensitive gas sensor for the determination of ammonium sulfide was demonstrated. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range of cataluminescence intensity vs concentration of ammonium sulfide gas was 1.4-115 microg mL(-1) (R = 0.998) with a limit of detection (S/N = 3) of 0.

[Evaluation of abdominal treatment with magnetite suspension in peritonitis].

The work discusses the results of the effect of intraoperative treatment of the abdominal cavity with a magnetite suspension on the T-cell link of the immunological reactivity of the organism of patients with diffuse forms of peritonitis. The preparation intensified lymphocyte proliferative activity. It was found that increase of the lymphocyte stimulation index in intraoperative treatment of the abdominal cavity with magnetite suspension in peritonitis was consequent upon increased production of interleukin-1 and other growth factors by macrophages.

From degradation to (re)magnetization: magnetic reprogramming of maghemite (Massart), magnetite, cobalt ferrite and ferrihydrite nanoparticles by human stem cells.

Iron-based nanostructures, whether environmental or synthetic, can infiltrate the human body and interact with cells due to their nanoscale dimensions. Some human cells, upon the internalization of iron oxide nanoparticles and their biodegradation, are capable of de novo biosynthesis of magnetic nanostructures. This process is evidenced by a transient loss and subsequent recovery of magnetic signal, a phenomenon termed "cellular re-magnetization". In this study, we explored the intracellular fate of four types of iron-based nanoparticles: maghemite (Massart), magnetite, cobalt ferrite, and fer

Toward protection of desalination steel structure from corrosion in harsh marine environment by magnetite-chitosan epoxy nanocomposite.

Although the desalination sector uses carbon steel extensively, it is crucial to put in place efficient anti-corrosion methods to shield these parts from the hazardous sea environment. In the current work, the magnetite-chitosan nanocomposite (MCS) was used to enhance the anti-corrosion durability of an epoxy resin coating for carbon steel in the desalination harsh marine environment. Magnetite and chitosan, a biopolymer derived from chitin, are combined to form a nanocomposite with promising anti-corrosion properties. The co-precipitation technique is utilized to synthesize MCS nanocomposite.

Distinct effects of conductive materials on anaerobic sulfate-rich wastewater treatment under varying operational modes.

Conductive materials (CMs) have shown great potential in enhancing anaerobic digestion of sulfate-rich wastewater by improving electron transfer. However, how the effectiveness of CMs varies under different reactor operational modes that shape microbial communities and influence system performance remains poorly understood. This study systematically compared sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) and continuous-flow reactors (CFRs) amended with magnetite (Fe₃O₄) or powdered activated carbon (PAC) for treating sulfate-rich wastewater. CM amendments significantly accelerated sulfate reduction, volatil

A guide to the design of magnetic particle imaging tracers for biomedical applications.

Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) is a novel and emerging non-invasive technique that promises to deliver high quality images, no radiation, high depth penetration and nearly no background from tissues. Signal intensity and spatial resolution in MPI are heavily dependent on the properties of tracers. Hence the selection of these nanoparticles for various applications in MPI must be carefully considered to achieve optimum results. In this review, we will provide an overview of the principle of MPI and the key criteria that are required for tracers in order to generate the best signals. Nanopartic

Development of Nickel- and Magnetite-Promoted Carbonized Cellulose Bead-Supported Bimetallic Pd-Pt Catalysts for Hydrogenation of Chlorate Ions in Aqueous Solution.

Cellulose grains were carbonized and applied as catalyst supports for nickel- and magnetite-promoted bimetallic palladium- and platinum-containing catalysts. The bimetallic spherical aggregates of Pd and Pt particles were created to enhance the synergistic effect among the precious metals during catalytic processes. As a first step, the cellulose bead-based supports were impregnated by nitrate salts of nickel and iron and carbonized at 973 K. After this step, the nickel was in an elemental state, while the iron was in a magnetite form in the corresponding supports. Then, Pd and Pt particles we

One-pot solvent-free synthesis of 2,3-dihydro-2-substituted-1H-naphtho[1,2-e][1,3]oxazine derivatives using Fe3O4@nano-cellulose/TiCl as a bio-based and recyclable magnetic nano-catalyst.

The present study describes an efficient and environmentally benign protocol for the synthesis of 2,3-dihydro-2-substituted-1H-naphtho[1,2-e][1,3]oxazine derivatives. Synthesis is done by one-pot three-component condensation of 2-naphthol, formaldehyde, and primary amines in the presence of Fe3O4@nano-cellulose/TiCl as a bio-based magnetic nano-catalyst under solvent-free conditions at room temperature grinding. This green procedure offers the advantages of high yield, short reaction time, environmental friendliness, easy workup, simple magnetic recovery of the catalyst and its reusability up

Cationic magnetoliposomes.

Magnetoliposomes (MLs) consist of nanosized, magnetisable iron oxide cores (magnetite, Fe(3)O(4)) which are individually enveloped by a bilayer of phospholipid molecules. To generate these structures, the so-called water-compatible magnetic fluid is first synthesized by co-precipitation of Fe(2+) and Fe(3+) salts with ammonia and the resulting cores are subsequently stabilized with lauric acid molecules. Incubation and dialysis of this suspension with an excess of sonicated, small unilamellar vesicles, ultimately, results in phospholipid-Fe(3)O(4) complexes which can be readily captured from t

Driving mechanism of different nutrient conditions on microbial mediated nitrate reduction in magnetite-present river infiltration zone.

Significant research is focused on the ability of riparian zones to reduce groundwater nitrate contamination. Owing to the extremely high redox activity of nitrate, naturally existing electron donors, such as organic matter and iron minerals, are crucial in facilitating nitrate reduction in the riparian zone. Here, we examined the coexistence of magnetite, an iron mineral, and nitrate, a frequently observed coexisting system in sediments, to investigate nitrate reduction features at various C/N ratios and evaluate the response of microbial communities to these settings. Additionally, we aimed

Oxidation of ferumoxytol by ionizing radiation releases iron. An electron paramagnetic resonance study.

Ferumoxytol (FMX) is an iron oxide nanoparticle that is FDA approved for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. FMX contains an Fe3O4 core. Currently, the redox chemistry of Fe3O4 nanoparticles remains relatively unexplored. FMX has recently gained interest as an anti-cancer agent. Ionizing radiation (IR) is a treatment modality employed to treat several types of cancer. Utilizing electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, we found that the products produced from the radiolysis of water can oxidize the Fe3O4 core of FMX. Because of the limited diffusion of the HO2• and HO• produced,

Reduction of Hg(II) to Hg(0) by magnetite.

Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic element, and its contamination of groundwater presents a significant threat to terrestrial ecosystems. Understanding the geochemical processes that mediate mercury transformations in the subsurface is necessary to predict its fate and transport. In this study, we investigated the redox transformation of mercuric Hg (Hg[II]) in the presence of the Fe(II)/Fe(III) mixed valence iron oxide mineral magnetite. Kinetic and spectroscopic experiments were performed to elucidate reaction rates and mechanisms. The experimental data demonstrated that reaction of Hg(II) with

Development of Palladium and Magnetite-Coated Diatomite as a Magnetizable Catalyst for Hydrogenation of Benzophenone.

A naturally derived silicate, diatomaceous earth has been endowed with magnetic properties by depositing magnetite nanoparticles on its surface. Palladium crystallites were created on the resulting magnetizable catalyst support. The support provided high specific surface area with high porosity which were ideal for the binding of both the magnetic particles and the palladium. The catalyst was successfully tested in the hydrogenation of benzophenone in three different solvents (methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol). Significant differences in catalytic activity were observed, allowing selective p

Biochemical changes of macrophages and U87MG cells occurring as a result of the exposure to iron oxide nanoparticles detected with the Raman microspectroscopy.

The core size of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) is a crucial factor defining not only their magnetic properties but also toxicological profile and biocompatibility. On the other hand, particular IONPs may induce different biological response depending on the dose, exposure time, but mainly depending on the examined system. New light on this problem may be shed by the information concerning biomolecular anomalies appearing in various cell lines in response to the action of IONPs with different core diameters and this was accomplished in the present study. Using Raman microscopy we studied the
