Association of a fetus in fetu and two teratomas: US and MRI.

We report a case of an abdominal mass in a newborn girl containing a fetus in fetu and two teratomas. Obstetrical sonography revealed the abnormality at 28 weeks of gestation. Post-natal US examination suggested the diagnosis of a fetus in fetu upon the finding of a vertebral column and fetal skeletal bones. US also showed two other rounded masses connected to the main lesion by vascular bundles. Preoperative MRI examination supplied further information regarding tissue composition and vascularisation of the mass lesion. The diagnosis was confirmed by pathological examination. Aetiological fac

Prenatal diagnosis, pathology, and genetic study of fetus in fetu.

We report the prenatal diagnosis, pathology, cytogenetics, and molecular studies of a retroperitoneal fetus in fetu. Prenatal ultrasonography of the host fetus in the third trimester showed an anencephalic, acardiac mass with identifiable extremities and spine within an intra-abdominal cystic mass. Pathological examination revealed a fetiform mass weighing 20 g with four extremities, digits, vertebral bodies, an oral cavity with developing teeth, primitive male external genitalia, a urinary bladder, a cloaca with an external opening, large intestines, a membranous capsule, and an umbilical cor

[Fetus in fetu: report of 2 cases and analysis of the literature].

Foetus in foetu is a very unusual cause of abdominal mass in the infancy. Twenty cases only have been quoted in the literature. Two others cases are added, concerning two girls: a three months infant, second born from a genuine twin pregnancy, and a four weeks newborn whose the mass was discovered before the birth, on routine ultrasonography. In together, the diagnosis was made in operating room, then confirmed by pathologic studies. Literature data are recorded, and the difference between teratomas and foetus in foetu is point. The pathogeny remains obscure. It could result from the inclusion

Twinning and anencephalus occurrence in relation to fetus-fetus interaction.

The hypothesis proposed by Knox (1970) that an anencephalic fetus arises from a fetus-fetus interaction between two dizygous twins predicts that the twinning rate, the population incidence of anencephalus, and the female proportion of anencephalics in a population should be positively interrelated. These associations were tested using Canadian data during a long period of time and over a large geographical area. The results did not support the hypothesis.

Fetus in fetu: the importance of autopsy in uncovering hidden abnormalities.

Fetus in fetu (FIF) is a rare anomaly of embryogenesis in which a malformed parasitic twin is found within the body of the normally developed host twin. It has a reported incidence of 1 per 500 000 births with a 2:1 male predominance. The authors present a unique case of FIF, where autopsy investigation played a pivotal role in identifying this exceptionally rare anomaly, rarely documented in the literature. A primigravida woman in her early 20s was diagnosed with FIF at 13+3 weeks of gestation. She opted for medical termination of her pregnancy. The postmortem examination confirmed the diagno

Scrotal Fetus in Fetu in a Newborn: A Rare Case Report.

Fetus in fetu is a rare phenomenon of infancy, separate from conjoined twins, teratomas, and acardiac twins. The pathogenesis is not well understood but has been theorized to originate from either the involution of a twin or the differentiation of a teratoma. While the majority of these are found in the retroperitoneum, the presence of a fetus in fetu within the scrotum is exceedingly rare. We present the diagnosis and management of a case of fetus in fetu in the scrotum of a newborn male including radiologic imaging and pathologic examination.

Occipitocervical Fetus in Fetu with Extracalvarial Extension: A Case Report.

Fetus in fetu (FIF) is an extremely rare congenital anomaly in the pediatric age group. It is defined by the presence of an axial skeleton and well-formed internal organs in a fetiform mass. Only about 15 cases of intracranial FIF have been reported in the literature worldwide. We report a case of temporo-occipitocervical FIF. This 7-month-old female child presented to us with occipital swelling that she had had since birth. A soft swelling was palpable in the retroauricular region with extension into the neck. A few bony parts were palpable in the swelling. Imaging was suggestive of a multise

Fetus in fetu: two case reports and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Fetus in fetu is a rare congenital anomaly and is defined as a monozygotic twin incorporated into the abdomen of its sibling during development. Fetus in fetu is often overlooked in the differential diagnosis of an abdominal mass. Unlike teratomas, fetus in fetu is a benign disorder. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the clinical characteristics of two patients, a thirty-months old boy who was found to have abdominal distension and a neonate who was diagnosed antenatally with abdominal mass. Computed tomography scan revealed the mass in which the contents favor a fetus in fetu rather

[Pre-natal retroperitoneal mass: teratoma or fetus in fetu?].

BACKGROUND: Several case reports in the literature brought to discussion the distinction criteria between fetus in fetu and teratoma. CASE REPORT: The authors present a case report of a premature newborn boy, evaluated for a capsulated abdominal mass with prenatal diagnosis pointing to possible malignant lesion. A CT scan showed an expansive, retroperitoneal lesion, from kidneys to pelvis, sacrum and coccyx, with solid, cystic and fatty areas; the fine needle aspiration was inconclusive, and he underwent surgery on day 9 with partial resection of the lesion. A new procedure to complete the ex

Fetus-in-fetu in the pelvis: report of a case and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Fetus-in-fetu is an extremely rare condition in which a malformed fetus is found in the body of its twin. To our knowledge, fewer than 100 cases have been reported. Wide variations of presentation have been described, although its embryo-pathogenesis and differentiation from a teratoma have not been well established. CLINICAL PICTURE: We describe a male neonate with a fetoid-like mass in his pelvis associated with bilateral undescended testes. The mass was detected on prenatal ultrasound scans. The diagnosis of fetus-in-fetu was considered prenatally and confirmed on a computed

Mediastinal fetus in fetu. Case report and embryological discussion.

Fetus in fetu is an extremely rare condition defined by the presence of both axial skeleton and organoid formations in the parasitic mass. Besides some authors assuming that fetus in fetu and highly-differentiated teratomas are part of the same pathogenic spectrum, it has been emphasized that these criteria indicate a rather different embryogenetic mechanism. We herein report the first case to our knowledge developed in the ventral mediastinum that was thought to be a tumor before birth. The literature is reviewed and we propose a new explanation for the development of this rare anomaly, based

Fetus in fetu in the liver: case report and review of the literature.

Fetus in fetu is an extremely rare cause of abdominal mass in infancy, which most likely arises from inclusion of monozygotic diaminiotic twin. This entity is distinguished from teratoma by the presence of vertebral axis with limb bud or any other appropriately situated bones or organs. It occurs predominantly in the upper retroperitoneum, less frequently in the pelvis and ileal mesentery. Unlikely sites of occurrence such as the cranial cavity and the scrotum have been reported. In the present case the sac that contains the fetus was found in the right lobe of the liver, a site which has not

Outcome of the surviving cotwin of a fetus papyraceus or of a dead fetus.

Serial ultrasound examinations have demonstrated that one of two gestational sacs in a twin pregnancy may often disappear. When it disappears at an early stage of gestation, the pregnancy may advance without any disturbance and the cotwin can be delivered well developed and lively. When the intrauterine death occurs in the second trimester, the dead fetus usually results in a fetus papyraceus and the cotwin continues to be alive near term. However, when death occurs in the last trimester, the viable twin may be spontaneously delivered soon and be premature. In some cases of late fetal death, t

Fetus-in-fetu: An ususual cause for abdominal mass in infancy.

Fetus-in-fetu is an unusual cause of retroperitoneal abdominal mass in infants, which most likely arises from inclusion of a monozygotic, diamniotic twin. This entity is distinguished from teratoma by its embryological origin, its unusual location in the retroperitoneal space, its invariable benignity, and by the presence of vertebral organization with limb buds and well-developed organ systems. Diagnosis is made radiographically by the finding of a diminutive vertebral column on a plain abdominal film. The treatment of choice is total excision with special attention being given to the fetus'

[AIDS and the fetus].

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome has become a major problem in women and children in European countries. The most frequent cause of contamination is intravenous drug abuse but heterosexual transmission appears to be more and more frequent. If the mother is seropositive, the proportion of contaminated infants is about 30% to 40%. Half of them develop AIDS within three years and nearly all of them have some clinical manifestations within five years. Numerous data provide clear evidence of transplacental transmission but the possibility of intrapartum transmission cannot be excluded. The proced
