Positron emission tomography with the radiotracer 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) plays an important role in the evaluation of bone pathology. However, FDG is not a cancer-specific agent, and knowledge of the differential diagnosis of benign FDG-avid bone alterations that may resemble malignancy is important for correct patient management, including the avoidance of unnecessary additional invasive tests such as bone biopsy. This review summarizes and illustrates the spectrum of benign bone conditions that may be FDG-avid and mimic malignancy, including osteomyelitis, bone lesions due to ben

Very few ultrastructural studies of fibrous dysplasia have been reported up to date. Eight cases of fibrous dysplasia (six cases of monostotic and two cases of polyostotic disease) were studied in detail by an electron microscope, and were compared with desmoplastic fibroma and fibrous cortical defect in order to clarify the fine structure of this disease. The fine structure of osteoblast or osteocyte-like cells, large cells including collagen fibers in the cytoplasm and so on was newly observed in this study. It was impossible to distinguish between monostotic and polyostotic forms even throu

An 18-year-old man presented with a pathological fracture of the right proximal femur. Desmoplastic fibroma was diagnosed through histological studies. Surgical management involved extended intralesional curettage and fracture stabilization by open reduction with intramedullary nailing, using a short Gamma nail. At 42-month follow-up, the patient presented no limitations or recurrence. Internal fixation after prior intralesional curettage is a valid treatment strategy for pathological fractures in young patients. A short nail was chosen to prevent direct tumor cell seeding throughout the femur

BACKGROUND: Desmoplastic fibroblastoma is a rare, benign fibrous tumor typically characterized by slow growth and absence of calcification. However, atypical presentations can pose significant diagnostic challenges. Here, we present a case of a large prepatellar mass with unusual features that complicated the preoperative and differential diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old male presented in June 2023 with a progressively enlarging mass in the left extremity over one year prior to presentation, following direct trauma to the area. While desmoplastic fibroblastomas are typically slow-

INTRODUCTION: Fibro-osseous lesions constitute a rare benign type of pathology with a non-odontogenic lineage that affect the craniofacial area. According to Waldrom's classification, these lesions are divided into: fibrous dysplasia (FD), cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) and desmoplastic fibroma (DF).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on patients diagnosed with fibro-osseous lesions of the craniofacial area at the Hospital Universitario La Fe, Valencia, during 1987-2009. A total of 19 cases were collected: 15 cases compatible with an FD diagnosis, 3 cases with a COF di

Collagenous fibroma (desmoplastic fibroblastoma) is an extremely rare benign soft tissue tumor of fibroblastic origin. The majority of reported cases have been located in the deep subcutis, fascia, aponeurosis, or skeletal muscle of the extremities, limb girdles, or head and neck regions. There has been no mention of underlying diseases in patients who developed this tumor. We here report an additional three cases of superficial collagenous fibroma, one of which was a dermal lesion occurring in the abdomen of a 26-year-old male patient with a 5-year history of pemphigus vulgaris prior to devel

Eleven cases of supratentorial neuroepithelial tumor presenting in infancy are reported. The tumors were characterized by their voluminous size, their intense desmoplasia, and the frequent presence of divergent astrocytic and ganglionic differentiation as demonstrated by special neurohistological and immunohisto- and immunocytochemical techniques. All the tumors presented in subjects below the age of 18 months, usually within the first 4 months of life. They most often involved the frontal and parietal regions and were composed predominantly of a dense desmoplastic tissue superficially resembl

Odontogenic cysts that can be problematic because of recurrence and/or aggressive growth include odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), calcifying odontogenic cyst, and the recently described glandular odontogenic cyst. The OKC has significant growth capacity and recurrence potential and is occasionally indicative of the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. There is also an orthokeratinized variant, the orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst, which is less aggressive and is not syndrome associated. Ghost cell keratinization, which typifies the calcifying odontogenic cyst, can be seen in solid lesions that

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic challenges in osteosarcoma arise in small biopsies with under-representation of the lesion and scant or absent osteoid matrix.
AIM: This study aimed to validate the utility of SATB2 antibody in the diagnosis of osteosarcoma and differentiate it from its histological mimics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 70 histologically proven cases of osteosarcomas and 97 other histological mimics were included in the study. IHC was performed using SATB2 monoclonal antibody.
RESULTS: SATB2 antibody revealed nuclear positivity in all 70 (100%) cases of osteosarcoma. The majority

BACKGROUND: Collagenous fibroma (CF), or desmoplastic fibroblastoma, is a rare benign tumor with few reported cases involving the facial region. Its presence in uncommon sites can pose diagnostic challenges due to overlapping clinical and radiologic features with malignant neoplasms.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a case of a 48-year-old female with CF in the juxtaforaminal premaxillary fat pad, presenting with neuralgic pain extending to the ipsilateral upper gingiva. The patient had a history of adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the right nasolabial fold, which was treated surgically

BACKGROUND: Primary bone tumours of the talus are rare and the existing literature is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of primary bone tumours affecting this uncommon site and suggest a management protocol for these tumours.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the Scottish Bone Tumour Register from January 1954 to May 2010 and included all primary bone tumours of the talus.
RESULTS: We identified only twenty three bone tumours over fifty six years highlighting the rarity of these tumours. There were twenty benign and three malignant tumours with a mean age

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma (DA) exhibits important differences in gender, anatomic distribution, radiographic findings, and histologic appearance compared to other types of ameloblastoma. Radiologically, DA is seen either as ill-defined mass containing osteolytic and sclerotic areas or as multifocal radiodense flecks within radiolucent background resembling a honeycomb. The radiographic differential diagnosis includes fibro-osseous lesions such as cemento-ossifying fibroma, fibrous dysplasia, calcifying odontogenic cyst, and chronic sclerosing osteomyelitis. Thus, DA should primarily be includ

Thirty-two patients affected with skeletal conditions were examined with MRI using Short TI Inversion Recovery sequence and Spectral Presaturation with Inversion Recovery (SPIR) sequence as well as Spin-Echo (SE) T1-weighted sequence and Fast Spin-Echo (FSE) T2-weighted sequence to compare their value in the assessment of skeletal lesions. SPIR sequence was performed after intravenous injection of Gd-DTPA. The lesions included primary bone tumors (10 cases: 1 osteosarcoma, 1 periosteal sarcoma, 1 Ewing's sarcoma, 1 chondrosarcoma, 2 non-ossifying fibromas, 1 chondroma, 1 chondromyxoid fibroma,

SOFT TISSUE TUMORS ARE CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO THEIR HISTOLOGICAL RESEMBLANCE TO NORMAL ADULT TISSUES AND CAN BE GROUPED INTO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES BASED ON METASTATIC POTENTIAL: benign, intermediate (locally aggressive), intermediate (rarely metastasizing) and malignant. Over the past two decades, considerable progress has been made in our understanding of the genetic background of soft tissue tumors. Traditional laboratory techniques, such as cytogenetic analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), can be used for diagnostic purposes in soft tissue pathology practice. Moreover,

One hundred and eight ameloblastomas diagnosed in a rural black Africa population were analysed for clinicopathologic findings other than those classically described. One patient had a polycystic ameloblastoma adjacent to an ameloblastic fibroma. Two other polycystic ameloblastomas showed aneurysmal bone cyst formation and one mandibular tumour was diagnosed as a keratoameloblastoma. Microscopic changes resembling an adenomatoid odontogenic tumour were present in association with two unicystic ameloblastomas and a HPV18-positive verrucous lesion occurred in the lining of a cystic space of a po

BACKGROUND: Desmoid fibromatoses are a group of nonmetastasizing, well differentiated, unencapsulated fibrous tissue proliferations that have a tendency for local invasion and recurrence. Biologically, they fall in an intermediate category between benign fibrous lesions and fibrosarcoma. Because of the rarity of this lesion in the upper respiratory tract and inadequate characterization of its biologic potential in the literature, this study was undertaken.
METHODS: The files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology were reviewed for cases of fibromatosis involving the sinonasal and nasophar

This article is a case-based review of the broad spectrum of tumors with musculoskeletal histology that can arise in the abdomen or pelvis and involve the soft tissues, muscle, and bone. In this article, pathology-proven cases are presented with a focus on radiographic, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography-computed tomography findings. The imaging features that differentiate tumors with musculoskeletal histology from more common abdominal tumors are discussed. Representative cases include malignant fibrous histiocytoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma

Twenty-four patients had reconstruction of the distal aspect of the radius with use of an osteoarticular allograft, between 1974 and 1992, after excision of a giant-cell tumor (twenty patients), a desmoplastic fibroma (two patients), a chondrosarcoma (one patient), or an angiosarcoma (one patient). Nine giant-cell tumors were recurrent lesions, and eleven were extracompartmental primary lesions that had extended through the cortex or subchondral bone. The average age of the patients was 31.5 years (range, fifteen to sixty-one years); thirteen patients were female and eleven were male. Seventee

According to a pathological definition, a bony sequestrum is defined as a piece of devitalized bone that has been separated from the surrounding bone during the process of necrosis. However, the radiological definition of a sequestrum is different and refers to an image of calcification visible within a lucent lesion, completely separated from the surrounding bone, without referring to the vascular status and histological nature of the calcified tissue. The term "button sequestrum" has been used in calvarial lesions. The prototype conditions that may present with a bony sequestrum are osteomye
