Hepatoprotective Effect of Ficus carica Leaf Extract on Mice Intoxicated with Carbon Tetrachloride.

Protective action of Ficus carica leaf ethanolic extract (obtained by maceration) was evaluated in an animal model of hepatotoxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Male albino mice were divided into six groups. group I was normal control group; group II received olive oil (CCl4 solvent), groups III-VI received CCl4. After inducing hepatic damage, group III served as control for CCl4; and groups IV- VI received different doses of Ficus carica ethanol extract (200, 400 and 800 mg/kg) prior to intoxication with CCl4. Liver marker enzymes were assayed in serum. Sections of livers were obs

Infection Patterns of a Liberibacter Associated with Macrohomotoma gladiata, a Psyllid Feeding on Ficus microcarpa.

Almost all known Liberibacters can be transmitted by psyllids. This suggests that there is a coevolutionary relationship between these two groups of organisms. However, detailed investigation of Liberibacters and psyllids have often focused on only a few species, thus potentially limiting knowledge on Liberibacter-psyllid associations. This study investigated the infection patterns of a Liberibacter inhabiting Macrohomotoma gladiata, a psyllid species feeding on Ficus microcarpa. Comparison of the Liberibacter's near-full-length 16S rDNA sequence with those of other known Liberibacters reveale

Diuretic activity of the aqueous extract leaves of Ficus glumosa Del. (Moraceae) in rats.

Experiments were carried out to validate the use of F. glumosa extract as a diuretic in the treatment of hypertension as claimed by traditional healers. The experiments were performed under the same conditions with two synthetic pharmacological diuretics considered as check (Furosemide and Amiloride hydrochlorothiazide). The aqueous extract leaves of F. glumosa accelerated the elimination of overloaded fluid. At the maximum of diuretic response, urinary osmolarity decreased significantly when compared with controls. The single dose treatment of the aqueous extract leaves of F. glumosa has sign

Health-promoting bioactivity and in vivo genotoxicity evaluation of a hemiepiphyte fig, Ficus dubia.

Ficus species have been used as a typical component in food and folk medicine in Asia for centuries. However, little is known regarding the bioactivity and genotoxicity of the recently identified Ficus dubia (FD), an indigenous plant of the tropical evergreen rain forest. FD is unique from other Ficus species because of its highly sought-after red-brown latex. Antioxidant properties together with phenolic and flavonoid contents of FD were elucidated. Health-promoting characteristics were examined by studying the inhibition of enzymes as a drug target for diabetes, hypertension, Alzheimer's dis

C3 photosynthetic activity in ephemeral leaflets of the constitutive CAM species Opuntia ficus-indica.

Ephemeral leaflets are produced on emerging daughter cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica, a constitutive crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) species of major agronomic and ecological importance. Despite their ubiquity across Cactaceae, these transient organs have never been characterized as discrete photosynthetic units. Here we investigate whether leaflets operate via C3 or CAM photosynthesis and quantify their contribution to early cladode carbon (C) economy. Gas-exchange measurements, stomatal aperture analysis, titratable acidity assays, C isotope discrimination (δ13C), and 13CO2 pulse-labelli
