Jellyfish Stings Trigger Gill Disorders and Increased Mortality in Farmed Sparus aurata (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea.

Jellyfish are of particular concern for marine finfish aquaculture. In recent years repeated mass mortality episodes of farmed fish were caused by blooms of gelatinous cnidarian stingers, as a consequence of a wide range of hemolytic, cytotoxic, and neurotoxic properties of associated cnidocytes venoms. The mauve stinger jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (Scyphozoa) has been identified as direct causative agent for several documented fish mortality events both in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea aquaculture farms. We investigated the effects of P. noctiluca envenomations on the gilthead sea

Combined Proteome and Toxicology Approach Reveals the Lethality of Venom Toxins from Jellyfish Cyanea nozakii.

Jellyfish are a type of poisonous cnidarian invertebrate that secrete lethal venom for predation or defense. Human beings often become victims of jellyfish stings accidentally while swimming or fishing and suffer severe pain, itching, swelling, inflammation, shock, and even death. Jellyfish venom is composed of various toxins, and the lethal toxin is the most toxic and hazardous component of the venom, which is responsible for deaths caused by jellyfish stings and envenomation. Our previous study revealed many toxins in jellyfish venom, including phospholipase A2, metalloproteinase, and protea

Natural toxins and their therapeutic potential.

Plants have been extensively investigated for exploring their therapeutic potentials, but there are comparatively scanty reports on drugs derived from animal kingdom, except for hormones. During last decade, the toxins that are used for defense by the animals, have been isolated and found useful tools for physiological and pharmacological studies, besides giving valuable leads to drug development. Toxins with interesting results have been isolated from the venoms of snakes, scorpions, spiders, snails, lizards, frogs and fish. The present review describe about some toxins as drugs and their bio

High throughput identification of human monoclonal antibodies and heavy-chain-only antibodies to treat snakebite.

Snakebite envenoming is a priority Neglected Tropical Disease that causes an estimated 81,000-135,000 fatalities each year. The development of a new generation of safer, affordable, and accessible antivenom therapies is urgently needed. With this goal in mind, rigorous characterisation of the specific toxins in snake venom is key to generating novel therapies for snakebite. Monoclonal antibodies directed against venom toxins are emerging as potentially strong candidates in the development of new snakebite diagnostics and treatment. Venoms comprise many different toxins of which several are res

Cross-reactivity between Anisakis spp. and wasp venom allergens.

BACKGROUND: Anisakiasis is caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked fish or cephalopods parasitized by live L3 larvae of nematode Anisakis spp. Larvae anchor to stomach mucosa releasing excretion/secretion products which contain the main allergens. It has been described that nematode larvae release venom allergen-like proteins among their excretion/secretion products. We investigated potential cross-reactivity between Anisakis and wasp venom allergens. METHODS: Two groups of 25 patients each were studied: wasp venom- and Anisakis-allergic patients. Sera from patients were tested by Imm

From sting to chronic wound - an uncommon weever fish envenomation case involving the knee.

INTRODUCTION: Weever fish (Trachinus draco) envenomation is one of the most frequently encountered marine injuries in the Mediterranean and coastal European regions. These fish, which possess venomous dorsal and opercular spines, often inflict injuries when accidentally stepped on in shallow waters. While the most common sting sites are the feet and lower extremities, unusual anatomical locations may occasionally be affected. The venom contains thermo-labile proteins, such as dracotoxin, which induce acute pain, inflammation, and potentially localized tissue necrosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We pr

A diver's guide to subaquatic envenomation in the Mediterranean.

INTRODUCTION: Between 40,000 and 50,000 divers and swimmers are envenomated each year and diving as a hobby is becoming increasingly popular. In the Mediterranean, envenomation is most often by Weever fish, Scorpion fish and jellyfish but coral and sea urchins may also be venomous. ENVENOMATION: Most stings cause local inflammation, oedema and pain. The severity of pain varies with the venom and the amount injected. In severe cases, stings may be life-threatening due to cardiogenic or anaphylactic shock or penetration of vital structures. MANAGEMENT: Most cases of envenomation are preventabl

Putting the brakes on snake venom evolution: the unique molecular evolutionary patterns of Aipysurus eydouxii (Marbled sea snake) phospholipase A2 toxins.

Accelerated evolution of toxins is a unique feature of venoms, with the toxins evolving via the birth-and-death mode of molecular evolution. The venoms of sea snakes, however, are remarkably simple in comparison to those of land snakes, which contain highly complex venoms. Aipysurus eydouxii (Marbled sea snake) is a particularly unique sea snake, feeding exclusively upon fish eggs. Secondary to this ecological change, the fangs have been lost and the venom glands greatly atrophied. We recently showed that the only neurotoxin (a three-finger toxin) gene found in the sea snake A. eydouxii has a

[Case clinically diagnosed as depressive state after being stung by a lumpfish (Inimicus japonicus)].

We experienced and report a case where the patient was clinically diagnosed as depressive state which developed after being stung by a lumpfish-a kind of Japanese stonefish (Inimicus japonicus). Stonefish venom causes various symptoms ranging from local swelling with pain to general disturbances such as respiratory and heart failure with marked hypotension, cardiac perturbation, and neurologic damage including general seizure and coma. In the current case, the patient complained of local swelling with pain in the early stage, but subsequently he developed depressive state, and finally he began

Pardaxin, a hydrophobic toxin of the Red Sea flatfish, disassembles the intact membrane of vesicular stomatitis virus.

Reaction of vesicular stomatitis virus with pardaxin, the hydrophobic toxin of the Red Sea flatfish, resulted in a profound morphological change of many virions and dissociation of their membrane and nucleocapsid into components readily separable by density gradient centrifugation. The basic matrix protein and acidic pardaxin segregated largely with the high density nucleocapsid. The dissociated virion membrane formed lipoprotein vesicles which retained glycoprotein spikes and a certain amount of N protein but no appreciable amounts of other nucleocapsid proteins and little if any RNA. Marine envenomations.

BACKGROUND: Marine stings are common but most are minor and do not require medical intervention. Severe and systemic marine envenoming is uncommon, but includes box jellyfish stings, Irukandji syndrome, major stingray trauma and blue-ringed octopus envenoming. Almost all marine injuries are caused by jellyfish stings, and penetrating injuries from spiny fish, stingrays or sea urchins. OBJECTIVE: This article describes the presentation and management of marine envenomations and injuries that may occur in Australia. DISCUSSION: First aid for jellyfish includes tentacle removal, application of

The incomparable fascination of comparative physiology: 40 years with animals in the field and laboratory.

This paper is not meant to be a review article. Instead, it gives an overview of the major research projects that the author, together with his students, colleagues and collaborators, has worked on. Although the main focus of the author's work has always been the fish lateral line, this paper is mainly about all the other research projects he did or that were done in his laboratory. These include studies on fishing spiders, weakly electric fish, seals, water rats, bottom dwelling sharks, freshwater rays, venomous snakes, birds of prey, fire loving beetles and backswimmers. The reasons for this

Environmental and Ecological Effects of Climate Change on Venomous Marine and Amphibious Species in the Wilderness.

INTRODUCTION: Recent analyses of data show a warming trend in global average air and sea surface ocean temperatures. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, the sea level has risen, and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased. This article will focus on climate change and projected effects on venomous marine and amphibious creatures with the potential impact on human health. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of environmental, ecological, and medical literature with a focus on climate change, toxinology, and future modeling specific to ven

Three-finger toxins from the venom of Micrurus tschudii tschudii (desert coral snake): Isolation and characterization of tschuditoxin-I.

Venoms from Micrurus (New World coral snakes) display potent peripheral neurotoxicity which may cause death by respiratory paralysis, yet many are poorly or not characterized. The major venom components of coral snakes are three-finger toxins (3FTxs) and phospholipases A2, whose proportions vary among species. As a trend, venoms of Micrurus from South America contain high proportions of 3FTxs, in contrast to most North and Central American species. Micrurus tschudii tschudii, the 'Desert coral snake' from Perú, displays an extreme 3FTx-predominant venom phenotype, with ∼95% of its proteome bel

Envenomations: an overview of clinical toxinology for the primary care physician.

About 4,000 to 6,000 venomous snakebites occur each year in the United States. Although these envenomations (also known as envenomings) are rarely fatal, about 70 percent require antivenom therapy. Few evidence-based guidelines are available for the management of envenomation. Antivenom therapy is the cornerstone of management for hemorrhagic or coagulopathic envenomation from pit vipers (with or without paralytic features), and for paralytic envenomation from coral snakes. Early intubation and ventilation may be required after bites from pit vipers whose venoms contain presynaptic neurotoxins

Scyphomedusae of the Mediterranean: state of the art and future perspectives.

Scyphomedusae (Phylum Cnidaria, Class Scyphozoa) are perceived as a nuisance due to their sudden outbreaks that negatively affect human activities (particularly tourism and fisheries) mainly because of their stings. A brief review of the history of scyphozoan blooms in the Mediterranean and updated information available after 2010 point to an increase in scyphozoan outbreaks. Whilst the negative effects on public health, aquaculture, coastal industrial activities and fisheries operations are undeniable, the effects on the ecosystem are not well defined. We focus on the trophic interactions bet

Thermal immersion in managing greater weever sting: A case study on delayed recovery.

We report the case of a 49-year-old woman who suffered an envenomation from a greater weever during a seaside vacation along the Aegean coast in Izmir, Türkiye. Following the incident, she experienced intense pain and sought treatment at an emergency department, where she received analgesics and cold compresses. Unfortunately, this approach failed to alleviate her pain, which persisted for approximately 24 hours. On the twelfth day, with symptoms worsening and the emergence of a larger wound than the one sustained on the day of the incident, she visited the University Hospital for further care

Venomous Bites, Stings and Poisoning by European Vertebrates as an Overlooked and Emerging Medical Problem: Recognition, Clinical Aspects and Therapeutic Management.

Europe presents a high number of venomous and poisonous animals able to elicit medically relevant symptoms in humans. However, since most of the accidents involving venomous or poisonous animals in Europe are unreported, their incidence and morbidity are severely overlooked. Here we provide an overview of the European vertebrate species of greatest toxicological interest, the clinical manifestations their toxins can cause, and their treatment. We report the clinical symptoms induced by envenomations and poisoning caused by reptiles, fishes, amphibians and mammals in Europe, ranging from mild,
