Seasonal fishery facilitates a novel transmission pathway in an emerging animal reservoir of Guinea worm.

Exploitation of natural resources is a driver of human infectious disease emergence. The emergence of animal reservoirs of Guinea worm Dracunculus medinensis, particularly in domestic dogs Canis familiaris, has become the major impediment to global eradication of this human disease. 93% of all Guinea worms detected worldwide in 2020 were in dogs in Chad. Novel, non-classical pathways for transmission of Guinea worm in dogs, involving consumption of fish, have been hypothesized to support the maintenance of this animal reservoir. We quantified and analyzed variation in Guinea worm emergence in

Investigation of ciguatoxins in invasive lionfish from the greater caribbean region: Implications for fishery development.

Lionfish, native to reef ecosystems of the tropical and sub-tropical Indo-Pacific, were introduced to Florida waters in the 1980s, and have spread rapidly throughout the northwestern Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. These invasive, carnivorous fish significantly reduce other fish and benthic invertebrate biomass, fish recruitment, and species richness in reef ecosystems. Fisheries resource managers have proposed the establishment of a commercial fishery to reduce lionfish populations and mitigate adverse effects on reef communities. The potential for a commercial fishery for lio

Characterization of Toxin Genes and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus Isolates in Fishery Products in Iran.

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common causes of seafood-borne diseases worldwide, which are attributable to the contamination of food by preformed enterotoxins. In this study, a total of 206 (34.3%) Staphylococcus aureus strains were obtained from 600 fish and shrimp samples and were tested for their antimicrobial susceptibility. We assessed the prevalence of the genes responsible for the staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEA, SEB) and toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1) genes. The results indicated that 34% of aqua food samples were contaminated with S. aureus, and 23.8% of these isola

Isolation of a rhabdovirus during outbreaks of disease in cyprinid fish species at fishery sites in England.

A virus was isolated during disease outbreaks in bream Abramis brama, tench Tinca tinca, roach Rutilis rutilis and crucian carp Carassius carassius populations at 6 fishery sites in England in 1999. Mortalities at the sites were primarily among recently introduced fish and the predominant fish species affected was bream. The bream stocked at 5 of the 6 English fishery sites were found to have originated from the River Bann, Northern Ireland. Most fish presented few consistent external signs of disease but some exhibited clinical signs similar to those of spring viraemia of carp (SVC), with ext

HIARA study protocol: impacts of artificial coral reef development on fisheries, human livelihoods and health in southwestern Madagascar.

The Health Impacts of Artificial Reef Advancement (HIARA; in the Malagasy language, "together") study cohort was set up in December 2022 to assess the economic and nutritional importance of seafood for the coastal Malagasy population living along the Bay of Ranobe in southwestern Madagascar. Over the course of the research, which will continue until at least 2026, the primary question we seek to answer is whether the creation of artificial coral reefs can rehabilitate fish biomass, increase fish catch, and positively influence fisher livelihoods, community nutrition, and mental health. Through

Genetic composition of queen conch (Lobatus gigas) population on Pedro Bank, Jamaica and its use in fisheries management.

The queen conch fishery in Jamaica is sustained by Pedro Bank, which is the main harvesting site located approximately 80 km south-west from Kingston. Due to its relative size, Pedro Bank has been subdivided into zones for management purposes by the Fisheries Division and the Veterinary Services Division. Understanding whether these sub-divisions reflect different sub-populations is critical for managing exploitation levels because fisheries management must demonstrate that harvesting does not endanger the future viability of the population as queen conch are on Appendix II of the Convention i

On-board study of gas embolism in marine turtles caught in bottom trawl fisheries in the Atlantic Ocean.

Decompression sickness (DCS) was first diagnosed in marine turtles in 2014. After capture in net fisheries, animals typically start showing clinical evidence of DCS hours after being hauled on-board, often dying if untreated. These turtles are normally immediately released without any understanding of subsequent clinical problems or outcome. The objectives of this study were to describe early occurrence and severity of gaseous embolism (GE) and DCS in marine turtles after incidental capture in trawl gear, and to provide estimates of on-board and post-release mortality. Twenty-eight marine turt

Physiological stress response, reflex impairment and delayed mortality of white sturgeon Acipenser transmontanus exposed to simulated fisheries stressors.

White sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) are the largest freshwater fish in North America and a species exposed to widespread fishing pressure. Despite the growing interest in recreational fishing for white sturgeon, little is known about the sublethal and lethal impacts of angling on released sturgeon. In summer (July 2014, mean water temperature 15.3°C) and winter (February 2015, mean water temperature 6.6°C), captive white sturgeon (n = 48) were exposed to a combination of exercise and air exposure as a method of simulating an angling event. After the stressor, sturgeon were assessed for a

Decoupling Algal Biomass and Microbial Attenuation in Wastewater-Fed Fisheries: A Spatiotemporal Analysis in an Indian Ramsar Site.

Although integrated wastewater-fed fisheries in the Ramsar-designated East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW) provide important ecosystem services, the long-term spatial and temporal dynamics of microbial attenuation in these managed pond systems remain insufficiently characterized. This study assessed the spatiotemporal dynamics of chlorophyll-a concentration and culturable bacterial abundance along a canal-to-pond transition system over 22 months. Water samples were collected from four fixed locations during 22 sampling months between September 2023 and August 2025 to determine total viable count (TVC),

Diagnosis and Off-Label Treatment of Subcutaneous Putative Dracunculoid Nematodes in Apteronotus albifrons Originating From Wild-Caught Fisheries.

Apteronotus albifrons (Gymnotiformes: Apteronotidae), commonly known as the black ghost knifefish, is a high-value ornamental fish that is susceptible to various parasites. The affected fish were wild-caught fisheries and subsequently introduced into a commercial breeding system. Among parasitic diseases, subcutaneous infections with putative dracunculoid nematodes are rarely documented in ornamental fish, and their management may be particularly challenging in wild-caught specimens introduced into breeding systems. This study aimed to describe an outbreak of subcutaneous helminthiasis in A. a

Total mercury, methylmercury and ethylmercury in marine fish and marine fishery products sold in Seoul, Korea.

In 2009, a survey of 177 samples of fish and fishery products from the markets in Seoul was carried out to investigate total mercury and organic mercury (methylmercury) concentrations and to establish a correlation, if any, between total and organic mercury levels. Concentrations of total and organic mercury in canned tuna ranged 0.001-2.581 and 0.003-1.307 mg/kg, respectively; those for fish, such as cod or salmon, ranged 0.012-2.529 and 0.021-0.507 mg/kg, respectively. Ethylmercury was not detected. More than 50% of total mercury in the samples existed as organic mercury. The correlation coe

Characterising injuries and pathologies of common dolphin Delphinus delphis mortalities in the South Australian Sardine Fishery.

Mortality of dolphins in fishing operations is often under-estimated, as shown by studies of beach-washed carcasses. Linking evidence obtained during necropsies with fishing method is fundamental to understanding the extent of mortality and the manner in which animals die. The South Australian Sardine Fishery (SASF) has operated a purse-seine industry since 1991. This study characterised injuries, pathological changes and life history of 49 dead dolphins collected from SASF during 2006-2019. Histology examination was conducted on 25 animals. Neonates, calves and juveniles accounted for 63% of

Are mercury levels in fishery products appropriate to ensure low risk to high fish-consumption populations?

The main goal of the present study is to determine the sources of methylmercury (MeHg) for high fish-consumption populations with the Portuguese population as showcase, as Portugal is the EU country with the highest fish consumption per capita (2019: 59.91 kg year-1). Since limited information is available on the effective levels of mercury after culinary treatments, cooked and raw codfish (Gadus morhua), hake (Merluccius merluccius), octopus (Octopus vulgaris), horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) were considered. The mercury concentration ranking Hake > Horse

Incidental catch of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) along the Sicilian coasts by longline fishery.

Somatostatin (SM), a peptide inhibiting the release of GH, is present and plays an inhibitory role in the regulation of several organ systems in men and other species. Various SM analogs (SM-As) have been developed and used in clinical practice because the short half-life of SM makes it unsuitable for routine treatment. Recently it has been shown that SM-As might be of therapeutic value in the treatment of active thyroid ophthalmopathy. So far, 61 patients have been treated with octreotide and the results have been published in the literature. It was found that in 41 patients the drug had a be

Use of a counterfactual approach to evaluate the effect of area closures on fishing location in a tropical tuna fishery.

Spatial closures are widely used in marine conservation and fisheries management and it is important to understand their contribution to achieving management objectives. Many previous evaluations of closed area effects have used before-after comparisons, which, without controlling for a full range of factors, cannot ascribe changes in fleet behaviour to area closures per se. In this study we used a counterfactual approach to disentangle the effect of two closed areas on fishing location from other competing effects on the behaviour of the Indian Ocean tuna purse seine fishery. Our results reve
