Pathogen-induced high mortality is a severe problem in turtle cultures. Increasing evidence indicates that pathogenic infection may disrupt iron homeostasis, thereby creating a vicious cycle of iron imbalance-inflammation-oxidative stress. However, the effects of infection on iron metabolism and related physiological traits in turtles remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the response of iron metabolism in juvenile soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) under acute bacterial challenge and its association with inflammation and oxidative stress. We intraperitoneally injected juveni

This report presented the case of a 55-year-old patient who was admitted to the intensive care unit following a ruptured bronchial arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The patient, with no significant medical history, experienced massive hemoptysis leading to cardiac arrest. After successful resuscitation and embolization of the AVM, the patient developed fever and acute respiratory distress syndrome, requiring deep sedation, muscle paralysis, and prone positioning. Blood culture sampled on the day of admission tested positive for Lancefieldella parvula on day 4. The patient received targeted ant

Infectious diseases are a major constraint on aquaculture. Genetic lines with different susceptibilities to diseases are useful models to identify resistance mechanisms to pathogens and to improve prophylaxis. Bacterial cold-water disease (BCWD) caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum represents a major threat for freshwater salmonid farming worldwide. A collection of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) isogenic lines was previously produced from a French domestic population. Here, we compared BCWD resistance phenotypes using a subset of isogenic lines chosen for their contrasted susceptibiliti

Bacteria of the genus Flavobacterium are recovered from a large variety of environments. Among the described species, Flavobacterium psychrophilum and Flavobacterium columnare cause considerable losses in fish farms. Alongside these well-known fish-pathogenic species, isolates belonging to the same genus recovered from diseased or apparently healthy wild, feral, and farmed fish have been suspected to be pathogenic. Here, we report the identification and genomic characterization of a Flavobacterium collinsii isolate (TRV642) retrieved from rainbow trout spleen. A phylogenetic tree of the genus

Infections caused by rare micro-organisms are the subject of research, as researchers are encouraged to find the necessary health measures to prevent and treat the disease, as well as the search for new insights into human-microbial interactions. This report describes the case of a newborn boy diagnosed with hydrocephalus and myelomeningocele who developed ventriculitis and sepsis from resistant Empedobacter brevis. This case highlights the unexpected identification of this bacterium in the cerebrospinal fluid and its multi-resistant pattern, which was crucial for proper therapeutic management

The outbreak of Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) infection has been confirmed in meat-type domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) for the first time in 27 years in Japan. In January 2014, increased mortality in a 14- to 21-day-old duck flock was reported to veterinary officials by the owner. The affected ducks exhibited reduced movement, ataxia and dorsal recumbency with leg paddling. Pathological findings were typical for an RA infection. Fibrinous and heterophilic pericarditis, airsacculitis, perihepatitis, ventriculitis and meningitis were observed. The bacterial isolate from duck organs was iden

BACKGROUND: Elizabethkingia anophelis has emerged as a formidable pathogen responsible for severe, life-threatening infections in immunocompromised populations. However, the genetic underpinnings of its virulence and antimicrobial resistance remain poorly characterized. Leveraging our previously assembled collection of 197 E. anophelis isolates with complete genome sequences, we performed an exhaustive, large-scale comparative analysis across global datasets to systematically map resistance determinants and virulence factors. Additionally, we constructed an integrated coexpression network to e

BACKGROUND: Elizabethkingia spp. are emerging as nosocomial pathogens causing various infections. These pathogens express resistance to a broad range of antibiotics, thus requiring antimicrobial combinations for coverage. However, possible antagonistic interactions between antibiotics have not been thoroughly explored. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of antimicrobial combinations against Elizabethkingia infections, focusing on their impact on pathogenicity, including biofilm production and cell adhesion.
METHODS: Double-disc diffusion, time-kill, and chequerboard assays were us

Although core xylose on glycoproteins has been implicated in allergy, infection and other biological processes, research on core xylose modification is rare. The lack of a β-d-xylosidase that can catalytically remove the core xylose directly from glycoproteins is a reason for this. Through functional genomic analysis, we identified a glycoprotein core xylosidase and named it gpcXase I. gpcXase I is located immediately downstream of glycoprotein core fucosidase cFase I in Elizabethkingia meningoseptica. These two genes form a functional operon for glycoprotein core modifications. Three acidic r

Nosocomial infections of Elizabethkingia species can have fatal outcomes if not identified and treated properly. The current diagnostic tools available require culture and isolation, which can extend the reporting time and delay treatment. Using comparative genomics, we developed an efficient multiplex real-time PCR for the simultaneous detection of all known species of Elizabethkingia, as well as differentiating the two most commonly reported species, Elizabethkingia anophelis and Elizabethkingia meningoseptica.

Bergeyella zoohelcum causes rare but severe human clinical diseases, which mostly arise from animal bites. Notably, Bergeyella infections can also occur in older people after prolonged exposure to dogs or cats without biting. We detected B. zoohelcum in oral cavities of therapy dogs in close contact with older people residing in nursing homes. Twenty-two bacterial isolates were identified as B. zoohelcum by using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Our results showed that MALDI-TOF MS is an effective tool for

Although IL-17 cytokines play critical roles in host defense immunity, dysregulated expression of these cytokines is associated with inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Riemerella anatipestifer is the most important infectious bacterium in the duck industry. Interestingly, not all avian species are equally susceptible to R. anatipestifer infection. This paper reports the first description of mortality rate, bacterial burden, and expression profiles of immune-related genes between ducks and chickens infected with R. anatipestifer. Ducks exhibited increased susceptibility to R. anatipestifer i

Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) is an important avian pathogen with considerable impact on poultry production worldwide. However, the diagnosis of RA infections may be difficult, mainly due to problems with unequivocal differentiation of RA from other Flavobacteriaceae and a lack of standardized methods and reagents. The aim of the present study was therefore to complement the routine diagnostic strategies for RA by design and evaluation of alternative diagnostic tools. We designed and validated a new RA-specific polymerase chain reaction assay, which proved to be a valuable tool for the identif

A 23-year-old male patient who was a follow-up case of neurosurgery presented to our emergency department with a history of high-grade fever and clinical features of meningitis for 1 week. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was sent to our laboratory for culture. The culture demonstrated growth of 1-2 mm in diameter light yellow coloured colonies of Gram-negative bacilli on chocolate and blood agar. There was no growth on MacConkey agar. The bacterium was multidrug resistant. Based upon the growth characteristics, bio-chemical reactions, drug susceptibility pattern and identification by Vitek 2 sys

BACKGROUND: Chryseobacterium indologenes is an opportunistic, multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacillus increasingly recognized as a cause of hospital-acquired infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Although rare, its intrinsic resistance to beta-lactams and its ability to colonize medical devices pose significant therapeutic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of C. indologenes hospital-acquired pneumonia in a 43-year-old HIV-positive patient with multiple comorbidities, including Kaposi sarcoma, diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease requiring hemodial

UNLABELLED: Acinetobacter baumannii is a clinically prevalent multidrug-resistant bacterium, while Elizabethkingia, an emerging pathogen, has shown increasing infection and mortality rates in recent years. Although co-infections involving both pathogens have been reported, their interactions remain poorly understood. In this study, clinical data from 15 co-infected patients revealed that such infections were more frequent in elderly individuals with underlying diseases requiring intensive care and prolonged hospitalization. The two isolates exhibited similar antibiotic resistance profiles. In

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica is an uncommon nosocomial pathogen that causes meningitis, pneumonia, and sepsis in neonates and in immunocompromised individuals. It exhibits resistance to many commonly employed first-line antibiotics used to treat gram-negative pathogens. Herein, we present three cases of late-onset sepsis with multi-drug resistant (MDR) Elizabethkingia meningoseptica in high-risk neonates. Case 1 was a one-day-old preterm low-birth-weight infant who presented with respiratory distress syndrome and septic shock. The patient was intubated and administered empirical broad-spectr

BACKGROUND: In mid-2025, a sudden increase in urinary isolates of Myroides spp, was observed in high-dependency units (HDUs) of a tertiary-care hospital. This study aimed to determine whether the clustering represented sustained transmission or a pseudo-outbreak linked to a common source.
METHODS: A combined retrospective-prospective investigation was conducted in HDUs comprising 8 intensive care units and 1 palliative care unit (total capacity: 89 beds). Seventy-five unique patients with Myroides spp isolated from urine cultures between July 2024 and August 2025 were included. Prospective is

Understanding disease dynamics in wild fish populations is essential for effective conservation and fisheries management, yet diagnosing marine diseases in wild organisms is challenging. Tenacibaculosis, a bacterial disease caused by Tenacibaculum spp., is emblematic of this challenge, having been widely reported in farmed Atlantic (Salmo salar) and Chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) salmon, but never confirmed in any species of wild Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.). Here, we present the first report of tenacibaculosis in wild-caught Pacific salmon. During holding experiments conducted with
