While its use is still widespread within the medical retina field, fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) is increasingly falling out of favour in the investigation of neuro-ophthalmological disease, with the introduction of new technologies, particularly optical coherence tomography. INTRODUCTION: Susac Syndrome (SS) consists of the triad of encephalopathy, branch retinal artery occlusion, and hearing loss. It is an autoimmune endotheliopathy that primarily affects young women. Two funduscopic findings, Gass plaques (GP) and arteriolar wall hyperfluorescence (AWH), have recently been described and are not only useful in making the SS diagnosis but also point to the endothelium as the site of autoimmune injury. PURPOSE: To document fluorescein and indocyanine green angiographic findings in patients with ocular toxoplasmosis.
METHODS: Charts of patients with ocular toxoplasmosis who were evaluated with fluorescein and indocyanine green angiograpy were reviewed.
RESULTS: In this study, eight (38%) females and 13 (62%) males with a mean age of 20.3 years were included. We sent questionnaires to 424 retina specialists in order to compile information on the use of fluorescein angiography in pregnant women. Four-hundred and three specialists responded. Of these, 313 (78%) had never performed fluorescein angiography on a pregnant woman. Ninety specialists (22%) had performed at least one fluorescein angiogram on a pregnant woman; detailed information was obtained on 105 patients. Histopathologic examination disclosed numerous Dalen-Fuchs nodules with underlying choroidal granulomas causing obliteration of the choriocapillaris and disruption of Bruch's membrane.
