Journal of the American Dental Association (1939)2024eng
BACKGROUND: In this case-control study, the authors examined the relationship between untreated caries in children and parent fluoride treatment refusal. The authors hypothesized that parents of children with a history of untreated caries would be less likely to refuse topical fluoride for their children than parents of children with no history of untreated caries.
METHODS: The study included children (≤ 18 years old) who were patients at a university dental clinic from January 2016 through June 2020. Children whose parents refused fluoride treatment were age-matched with children whose paren

Two-minute topical applications with four different fluoride compounds, acidulated phosphate fluoride, sodium fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate and stannous fluoride, were evaluated for ability to reduce the acide solubility of human root surfaces in vitro. Each fluoride was in aqueous solution with the fluoride level adjusted to 1.23 percent and the pH native. Rectangular windows were prepared on root surfaces and control versus test differences were invariably studied within teeth and not between teeth. Sodium fluoride and sodium monofluorophosphate solutions reduced root surface solubili

Utilizing a newly developed biopsy method, the F uptake in the outer 3 mum of enamel from a single topical application of neutral NaF or amine F solution was tested on cleaned and plaque-covered premolars in 12- to 14-year-old children. Cleaned teeth treated with neutral NaF acquired only insignificant amounts of F. The presence of plaque seemed to enhance the deposition of F in surface enamel. The findings were discussed in relation to the possible mechanisms of action of topically applied fluorides. Topical treatments with amine F increased surface enamel F considerably more than the NaF. PURPOSE: Fluoride is essential for protecting the teeth from dental caries. The combined use of lasers with fluoride is being explored to increase the fluoride uptake of the tooth after topical fluoride application. The present research aimed to assess the efficacy of diode laser irradiation in enhancing fluoride uptake in primary teeth enamel following topical fluoride application.
METHODS: A total of 14 primary teeth (70 enamel slabs) were selected for the study. From each primary tooth, five enamel slabs were made and were put randomly into five different groups, that is, group I: control

UNLABELLED: This article discusses the possible cariostatic mechanisms of the action of fluoride. In the past, fluoride inhibition of caries was ascribed to reduced solubility of enamel due to incorporation of fluoride (F-) into the enamel minerals. The present evidence from clinical and laboratory studies suggests that the caries-preventive mode of action of fluoride is mainly topical. There is convincing evidence that fluoride has a major effect on demineralisation and remineralisation of dental hard tissue. The source of this fluoride could either be fluorapatite (formed due to the incorpor

The discovery and implementation of fluoride in the prevention of dental caries is often praised as one of the most important achievements in health care. In the early 20th century, it took 30 y to identify fluoride as the cause of enamel mottling but also of reduced caries prevalence in a population drinking water containing fluoride. Similarly, from 1960 to 1990, it took major efforts to unravel the working mode of fluoride in such detail that a rational scheme of caries prevention could be formulated. This article describes the scientific struggle leading to a consensus on the topic. For a

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is the most common infectious disease, affecting approximately 60 to 90% of the world population, especially young children, and disadvantaged communities. Due to the extremely high prevalence and the significant negative impact on general health, well-being, and quality of life it is considered a global public health problem. Despite the improvement of policies to promote oral health care in the past decades, dental caries is still a healthcare challenge, characterized by increasing disparities among different social groups between and within countries. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify and categorize polarized messages about fluoride in Facebook posts shared by professionals or organizations engaged in scientific communication.
METHODS: A total of 250 English-language Facebook posts were retrieved using CrowdTangle. Posts were classified by a trained investigator according to their fluoride perspective (pro- or anti-fluoride) regarding dental caries prevention. Each post was segmented into individual sentences and analyzed using deductive thematic content analysis in QDA Miner to determine polarization status (polarized or nonpolarize

Health authorities have promoted community water fluoridation (CWF) to prevent dental caries for more than 75 years. However, growing evidence has raised questions about the safety of this public health intervention, particularly for young children who are at risk of excess fluoride intake. Divergent opinions about the risk-benefit ratio of CWF have ignited a global debate. The efficacy of topical fluoride in preventing dental caries is strong, whereas contemporary evidence for systemic administration of fluoride is weaker. Inequalities in access to dental care and topical fluorides introduce

After a dental examination at school a representative sample of 1244 schoolchildren in the Rems-Murr district received a questionnaire which had to be answered by their parents at home. The questions dealt with the use of fluorides and dental consultation of the children. Forty-nine per cent of the questionnaires were returned. The survey shows that fluoride supplementation by tablets enjoys an acceptance of more than 90% in early childhood, but loses much of its importance in later years. Eighty-eight per cent of the pupils brush teeth with a fluoridated dentifrice and ca. 39% of the househol

It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to support optimal systemic and topical fluoride as an important public health measure to promote oral health and overall health throughout life. Fluoride is an important element in the mineralization of bone and teeth. The proper use of topical and systemic fluoride has resulted in major reductions in dental caries and its associated disability. Dental caries remains the most prevalent chronic disease in children and affects all age groups of the population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has named fluoridation of wa

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate political affiliation as a correlate of childhood vaccine hesitancy and opposition to topical fluoride and community water fluoridation (CWF).
METHODS: Data were collected from caregivers using an online REDCap questionnaire administered to 1,049 caregivers at five university- or children's hospital-based clinics in four states and via social media between November 2020 and September 2021. We assessed caregivers' political affiliation, childhood vaccine hesitancy, topical fluoride opposition, and CWF opposition. Confounder-adjusted logistic regression models evaluated asso

The discovery of fluoride in dentistry has revolutionized treatment modalities with a new aspect of prevention and conservation of tooth structure coming into foreplay. Since then, there has been a lot of research on both topical and systemic fluoridation in an overzealous attempt to control the most debilitating dental problem of caries. Although topical fluoride is still being widely used as a preventive measure for dental caries, systemic administration of the same has gained major criticism worldwide due to the low margin of safety of fluoride and no control over the amount of individual i

In this in vitro study, examination of the enamel surface morphology after topical application of an amine fluoride solution with different fluoride (F) content was carried out. Sound human enamel slabs were treated with an amine fluoride solution containing either 1.0, 0.5 or 0.25% F for 3 min. during 3 days. All slabs were examined using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) qualitative analysis. The globular precipitates were revealed in all treated specimens, regardless of F content. The distribution of the deposits was more homogeneous in groups treated

For a few decades, a decrease in the caries burden in all age groups has been observed in Germany. The regular use of fluoride preparations is described as the main reason for the caries decline. It is well established that topical fluoride application directly to the tooth surfaces in the oral cavity, in particular fluoride-containing toothpastes and fluoride varnishes, is responsible for the decline. Several mechanisms of action, such as the formation of a calcium fluoride layer, remineralization, and the effects on bacterial plaque, were determined to be responsible for the overall clinical

The aim of this paper was to critically review the current role of community water fluoridation in preventing dental caries. Original articles and reviews published in English language from January 2001 to June 2006 were selected through MEDLINE database. Other sources were taken from the references of the selected papers. For the past 50 years community water fluoridation has been considered the milestone of caries prevention and as one of the major public health measures of the 20th century. However, it is now accepted that the primary cariostatic action of fluoride occurs after tooth erupti

Effective preventive programs must be instituted early in the life of a child. The pediatrician plays an important role in preventive oral health care, because most children do not visit a dentist before 3 years of age. Fluoride therapy decreases the caries vulnerability of the tooth, oral hygiene measures are important to remove bacterial plaque, and dietary modifications reduce the number of carbohydrate exposures per day. Community water fluoridation is proposed in Austrian cities, because it continues to be the most cost-effective caries prevention measure available. As long as the populat

Although the relationship between fluoride and dental caries has been widely studied and definitively determined, the relationship between fluoride and periodontal health and disease is not clear. Conflicting studies in the literature either suggest routine fluoride usage as an adjunct to conventional periodontal therapy or argue against topical fluoride use on periodontally involved teeth. This review summarizes the literature that addresses the utility of fluoride in patients with periodontal disease and aims to advance a rational criterion for the use of fluorides in the management of perio

Fluoride remains the keystone of evidence-based caries prevention by stabilizing the mineral balance at the tooth-biofilm-saliva interface. Contemporary understanding emphasizes a predominantly post-eruptive, topical mode of action where fluoride inhibits demineralization and accelerates remineralization. This interfacial catalysis is reinforced by pH-responsive calcium-fluoride-like reservoirs that release fluoride during acid challenges. While community water fluoridation confers population-level reductions, the most effective approach is sustaining low-level fluoride in the biofilm environm

To date, many of the ways of controlling tooth decay involve the use of fluorides. Either systemically via fluoridated water and tablets, or, topically, with fluoride-containing toothpaste and mouthrinses. There is now evidence that the prevalence of dental caries is declining in communities with unfluoridated water, as well as in those with fluoridated water. This phenomenon may be related to an increase of fluoride in the food chain; the unintentional ingestion of fluoride-containing dental health products; and the increasing contamination of the total environment with fluoride emissions and
