Experiences of gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB) ingestion: a focus group study.

GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate) is a significant new drug of abuse added to the United States Controlled Substance Act in 2000. The majority of the published literature on GHB consists of clinical case reports, mainly from emergency departments, and a collection of laboratory-based studies, focused mainly on anesthesia. While comments about the various experiences and behaviors of human users are often included in such studies or reports, these aspects of GHB are only just beginning to be systematically investigated or detailed. Reported here are data from a qualitative study using focus group met

Focus group interviews about AIDS in Rakai District of Uganda.

Focus group interviews about AIDS were held in Rakai district, Uganda during early 1990 with groups from various sections of the community. It was found that the knowledge of AIDS symptoms and its transmission were widespread. Attitudes regarding many aspects of sexual behavior, AIDS patients, condoms, injections, hospital treatment, sexually transmitted diseases and an AIDS cure were investigated. We found that most people no longer fear casual contact with AIDS patients but they blame spouses of people with AIDS for spreading the infection. Condoms are generally not trusted. Many people feel

Acceptability of Self-Sampling for Cervical Screening in Ethnically Diverse Groups in Northwest England: A Focus Group Study.

INTRODUCTION: Research indicates disproportionately low cervical screening uptake by diverse ethnic groups in England. If acceptable, self-sampling might address population-specific barriers and improve screening uptake. The Alternative CErvical Screening (ACES) Diversity study aimed to explore the prospective acceptability of self-sampling (urine sampling and self-swabbing), as an alternative to current cervical screening, among women from diverse ethnic groups. METHODS: A qualitative study design was employed using focus groups. Forty-eight women from diverse ethnic groups were recruited vi

Patients views on which return-to-work outcomes should be prioritised: A nominal group technique focus group.

OBJECTIVE: Injuries can have a long-lasting effect on ability to return to work, but there is little research on which outcomes are most important to patients. This study aims to identify and prioritise return-to-work outcomes important to patients for evaluating vocational rehabilitation interventions. METHODS: Nominal group technique focus group with trauma patients. RESULTS: Focus group participants (n = 6) included mostly traumatic brain injuries, a range of occupation types, ages and both genders. Participants identified and prioritised their eight most important outcomes which were: se

An Italian Survey and Focus Groups on Fibromyalgia Impairment: Impact on Work and Possible Reasonable Accommodations.

Fibromyalgia symptoms affect the sufferers' working life; however, through reasonable accommodations in workplaces, they can continue to work satisfactorily. There are no Italian studies on factors that facilitate or hinder fibromyalgia-affected people's working life. Our objective was to explore, in a pre-pandemic setting, the quality of working life of fibromyalgia sufferers and reasonable accommodations to improve it. Quantitative and qualitative methods were applied; a survey-questionnaire, participatory-developed, was online-administered to a sample of self-reported FM sufferers (N = 1176

Focus Groups With American Indian/Alaska Native Adults to Discuss Substance Misuse and Access to Services.

BACKGROUND: After the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a 53% increase in overdose deaths in the U.S., with the highest rates among American Indian/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) individuals compared with all racial/ethnic groups in the U.S. Historical trauma has been linked to substance use among AI/AN individuals. First cited in the 1990s, historical trauma is an intergenerational response to the loss of AI/AN communities' land, peoples, and culture secondary to colonization in North America. Two-Eyed Seeing is the gift of multiple perspectives treasured by many Indigenous peoples, which

Reirradiation of recurrent brain tumors: a review by the ESTRO CNS Focus Group.

PURPOSE: Reirradiation has become an area of increasing clinical and scientific interest, particularly in neuro-oncology. This non-systematic review on central nervous system (CNS) tumors by the CNS focus group of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology provides a pragmatic synthesis of the available evidence, excluding gliomas. We address key questions related to patient selection, fractionation, technical considerations, and treatment safety. METHODS: Relevant studies on the use of reirradiation for meningiomas, ependymomas, brain metastases, and pituitary neuroendocrine tumors,

The patient's voice: real-world experiences of a transthyretin amyloidosis focus group.

BACKGROUND: Transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) is a progressive, multisystemic disorder that severely impacts patient quality of life. Despite therapeutic advancements, significant delays in diagnosis and care persist, often due to insufficient awareness among healthcare professionals. We aimed to highlight the experiences of patients living with ATTR in Spain in order to understand their daily challenges within the healthcare system. METHODS: As part of the CARABELA-ATTR initiative, we conducted a focus group discussion with six patients with confirmed ATTR from different regions of Spain. The

Transfusion thresholds in apheresis: Results from a survey and focus group discussion.

BACKGROUND: Clinical practice guidelines for red blood cell (RBC) or platelet transfusion are not tailored specifically for therapeutic apheresis patients. It is unclear how provider transfusion thresholds in the peri-therapeutic apheresis period correlate with guidelines. We hypothesized that individual apheresis clinician practice would not wholly adhere to transfusion guidelines. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A large, international survey was designed, beta tested, piloted and sent to all members of the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) Therapeutic Apheresis Subsec

In their own words: A qualitative focus group study of resilience in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a debilitating mood disorder. Empowering people to live well in the context of their illness represents an ongoing clinical challenge. Resilience research offers potential opportunities to address these complexities, yet debates regarding its definition and operationalisation limit interpretations of findings and future study designs. Including the voices of patients in this debate is crucial to understand resilience from a nuanced, multidimensional perspective. METHOD: We aimed to understand how patients with BD experienced resilience. Four focus groups i

Understanding potentially inappropriate medication: A focus group study with general practitioners.

INTRODUCTION: Polypharmacy and Potentially Inappropriate Medication (PIM) pose significant challenges for older adults, frequently leading to adverse health outcomes. While digital health tools offer promise solutions to improve medication management for this population, their integration into primary care settings remains slow. This study aims to explore the perspectives of Portuguese general practitioners (GPs) regarding polypharmacy, PIM, and the adoption of digital health-related tools for medication appropriateness in older adults. METHODS: Five qualitative focus group sessions were cond

Paramedic recognition of posterior circulation stroke: a vignette and focus group study.

INTRODUCTION: The main pre-hospital screening tool used for stroke in Ireland and the United Kingdom is the FAST (face, arms, speech, time) test. However, posterior circulation stroke (PCS) patients may be FAST negative on exam, presenting with sudden dizziness, headaches, visual problems, nausea and vomiting and balance/co-ordination problems. There is a lack of research into paramedic recognition of PCS, and this study sought to evaluate recognition rates among paramedics (Ps) and advanced paramedics (APs) in Ireland. METHODS: A cross-sectional sequential exploratory design was chosen. An a

Spirituality as Strategies for Coping With Tropical Spastic Paraparesis: Results of Focus Group.

In the logic of integrality in health, one of the aspects less addressed by assistance services is the question of spirituality. This study utilized qualitative analysis from focus groups to identify whether spirituality can contribute to coping with problems arising from the HTLV-1 myelopathy associated or tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). The testimonies were recorded and then transcribed. The information was then systematized by the analysis of thematic-categorical content. When giving voice to people who suffer from HAM/TSP, there is clear evidence that spirituality, understood broad
