The authors have gathered and analyzed the visual hallucinations described in the mid- to late-19th century from archived medical records of the former psychiatric hospital "Osservanza" in Imola, northern Italy. Though the investigation was not intended as a statistical survey, the principal aim being to classify the hallucinations according to their outward characteristics, the authors have tried to locate the possible sources of these phenomena in folklore and religious iconography.

The archetype of the 'Irish giant' in folklore appears to be rooted in historical individuals afflicted by pituitary gigantism. This review compiles and critically assesses the veracity of historical accounts, primarily from the late 17th to the early 20th century, for a group of individuals with gigantism that had Irish origins. Clinical and, in some cases, osteological data (e.g., Charles Byrne, Cornelius Magrath, and Patrick Cotter) confirm a diagnosis of pituitary gigantism, a rare disease that is caused by excess growth hormone secretion from a pituitary adenoma. In the pre-scientific era

Sleep Paralysis (SP) is a state that occurs during the hypnagogic or hypnopompic period in which one finds themselves unable to move despite being conscious. During an episode of SP, the individual experiences muscle atonia, as they would during normal sleep, but they remain conscious. SP is also largely associated with three types of hallucinations - the 'intruder', the 'incubus', and an out of body experience. It can induce tremendous fear in the individual experiencing it, and cause significant distress. SP has been found to co-occur with chronic conditions such as hypertension and obstruct

Until recently, the popular notion that psychoemotional stress can have an impact on hair growth has been treated with skepticism and assigned to the realm of folklore by many authorities. Yet it has long been appreciated that episodes of alopecia areata (AA) have occurred after severely stressful life events (Reinhold, 1960; Whitlock, 1976). This has triggered debates about whether AA should be considered a psychosomatic disorder (Misery and Rousset, 2001; Willemsen et al., 2009).

A 39-year-old woman drank one tablespoon of white vinegar in order to 'soften' crab shell stuck in her throat. Endoscopy revealed inflammation of the oropharynx and second-degree caustic injury of the oesophagus extending to the cardia. She had an uneventful recovery. This case report confirmed that vinegar could cause ulcerative injury to the oropharynx and oesophagus. The folklore application of vinegar 'dislodging' a foreign body in the throat should be strongly discouraged.

Globally, trans and gender diverse people contend with day-to-day exclusion, discrimination, and marginalisation, often culminating in experiences of poverty and homelessness. In this discussion article, we outline a bricolage research orientation rooted in liberation and Indigenous approaches brought into dialogue with the broader cannon of community psychology for meaningful research with homeless trans and gender diverse people. Such an approach transcends rigid disciplinary divides and shapes a framework for collaborative action, advocacy, and social change. We argue that scholar-activism,

Most European cultures, especially in rural areas, and until recently, routinely used ritual magic procedures to protect new-born children and their mothers from fairies, demons, and other supernatural beings. There seemed general recognition that this was a hazardous period for mother and child even if the dangers were seen as external, rather than internal (Hastings, 1910; Krappe, 1930). In this paper, several of these legends will be recounted, which illustrate a number of recurring themes which are of considerable interest to the student of human development. It is proposed that the change

In Slavic folklore, Koschei the Immortal was bony, thin and lean. Was his condition caused by severe calorie restriction (CR)? CR deactivates the target of rapamycin pathway and slows down aging. But the life-extending effect of severe CR is limited by starvation. What if Koschei's anti-aging formula included rapamycin? And was rapamycin (or another rapalog) combined with commonly available drugs such as metformin, aspirin, propranolol, angiotensin II receptor blockers and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.

Euphorbiaceae (Croton macrostachyus H.; bā dòu) is used in Ethiopian folklore medicine for the treatment of malaria, gonorrhea, diabetes, wounds, fungal infections, and helminths. No scientific investigations have been performed to substantiate these claims. This study aimed to investigate the in vivo antiplasmodial activity of 80% methanol extract of the fruit and the root of Croton macrostachyus H. in a rodent model of malaria. The rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei was used to inoculate healthy 8-week-old male Swiss albino mice weighing 23-27 g. Each of the hydroalcoholic crude extr

Wood ash, a traditional multipurpose agent, is sometimes used under occlusion as a folkloric prescription to ease pain and edema. Adding water or oil to ash forms a mixture with strong alkaline properties. We present three interesting cases who sustained full-thickness burns after application of a poultice of wetted wood ash for the treatment of leg pain.

INTRODUCTION: In various cultures there are vocal sounds and cries associated with the folk tradition. All these cries are emitted in a single breath, have a high frequency and are loud. They are consequently audible over long distances and cut through other vocal expressions or other sounds generated by instruments.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this work is to acoustically analyze some of these folkloric cries and study elements common to all of them.
METHODS: In this study, Irrintzi, Aturuxo, Tzagrit, ululation Darfur and Kurava cries were subjected to descriptive acoustic spectrographic a

This study examined the relationship between the level of parental stress (Parenting Stress Index) experienced by mothers of children during their child's second year of life and the frequency and appropriateness of the health care they obtained for their child. No systematic relationships were found between the amount or medical necessity of the pediatric health care obtained in relation to maternal stress for this largely middle class population. Contrary to clinical folklore, these mothers were able to appropriately separate their decision making regarding seeking health care for their chil

Salvia veneris is endemic to Cyprus and used for pain relief and infectious diseases by local people. This study aimed to evaluate folkloric uses of Salvia veneris and develop a topical formulation for analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects as an alternative to NSAIDs. The analgesic activity of Salvia veneris ethanol extract was studied using an acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice and formalin-induced paw licking in rats. For anti-inflammatory activity, the formalin-induced paw edema model was used. Five topical formulations were prepared by varying the concentrations of ingredients and

Anacardium occidentalis (family: Anacardiaceae) is a plant of the tropical climate widely used by folklore to treat pain and inflammation. This study was conducted to evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of the leaf extracts in rat and mice using different models in other to confirm folkloric claims. The aqueous, hexane, dichloromethane and methanol extracts (AEAO, HEAO, DEAO and MEAO respectively) were investigated for analgesic effects in acetic acid induced pain in mice. They significantly reduced the number of writhing (p<0.001) and the highest analgesic effect was seen in

Aframomum melegueta (alligator pepper (AP)) and Aframomum danielli (bastered melegueta (BM)) seeds have been known to improve sexual function in folkloric medicine. This study investigates the effects of AP and BM seeds' alkaloid extracts on the activities of enzymes (acetylcholinesterase (AChE), angiotensin-1-converting enzyme (ACE), phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5), and arginase) relevant to erectile dysfunction (ED). Alkaloids from the seeds were prepared by the solvent extraction method and their interactions with AChE, ACE, PDE-5, and arginase were assessed. Gas chromatographic (GC) analyses o
