Streptococcus pneumoniae is desiccation tolerant and infectious upon rehydration.

UNLABELLED: Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a frequent colonizer of the nasopharynx and one of the leading causative agents of otitis media, pneumonia, and meningitis. The current literature asserts that S. pneumoniae is transmitted person to person via respiratory droplets; however, environmental surfaces (fomites) have been linked to the spread of other respiratory pathogens. Desiccation tolerance has been to shown to be essential for long-term survival on dry surfaces. This study investigated the survival and infectivity of S. pneumoniae following desiccation under ambient condit

Prevalence of Sarcoptes scabiei in the homes and nursing homes of scabietic patients.

This study determined the prevalence of Sarcoptes scabiei in the home environment of 37 confirmed cases of scabies and in five nursing homes with scabietic patients. Dust samples from 44% of infested patients' homes contained scabies mites. Live mites at the time the dust samples were analyzed were present in 64% of these homes. Live mites were recovered most often from bedroom floors or overstuffed chairs and couches. The density of live and dead mites ranged from 1 to 5 mites/0.1 gm of dust or 1 to 9 mites/m2 of surface area sampled. The presence of mites in fomites coupled with survival and

Knowledge and remaining gaps on the role of animal and human movements in the poultry production and trade networks in the global spread of avian influenza viruses - A scoping review.

Poultry production has significantly increased worldwide, along with the number of avian influenza (AI) outbreaks and the potential threat for human pandemic emergence. The role of wild bird movements in this global spread has been extensively studied while the role of animal, human and fomite movement within commercial poultry production and trade networks remains poorly understood. The aim of this work is to better understand these roles in relation to the different routes of AI spread. A scoping literature review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Items fo

Review of animal transmission experiments of respiratory viruses: Implications for transmission risk of SARS-COV-2 in humans via different routes.

Exploring transmission risk of different routes has major implications for epidemic control. However, disciplinary boundaries have impeded the dissemination of epidemic information, have caused public panic about "air transmission," "air-conditioning transmission," and "environment-to-human transmission," and have triggered "hygiene theater." Animal experiments provide experimental evidence for virus transmission, but more attention is paid to whether transmission is driven by droplets or aerosols and using the dichotomy to describe most transmission events. Here, according to characteristics

Dermatologic infestations.

Head lice are transmitted by head to head contact. Optimal therapy includes malathion lotion 0.5% repeated in one week left on for 30 minutes to 8 hours. Spinosad topical suspension 0.9% repeated in one week left on for 10 minutes is another option. Scabies is transmitted mainly by direct contact but also via heavily infested fomites due to crusted scabies. Permethrin 5% cream to the body repeated in four days is often sufficient; however, scalp treatment with malathion lotion 0.5% is helpful in crusted scabies and in infested children. Oral ivermectin 200 mcg/kg is another option, repeated in

COVID-19 and tuberculosis in South Africa: A dangerous combination.

There has been much speculation during the past week about the catastrophe that awaits once coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) establishes itself in the poorest communities of South Africa (SA) and, importantly, in informal settlements. Evidence to date suggests that COVID-19 is efficiently passed from infected individuals via large droplets and hard-surface fomites.

Scabies: a review of diagnosis and management based on mite biology.

Scabies is a contagious parasitic dermatitis that is a significant cause of morbidity, especially outside of the United States. Scabies is diagnosed most often by correlating clinical suspicion with the identification of a burrow. Although scabies should be on the differential for any patient who presents with a pruritic dermatosis, clinicians must consider a wide range of diagnostic possibilities. This approach will help make scabies simultaneously less over- and underdiagnosed by clinicians in the community. Atypical or otherwise complex presentations may necessitate the use of more definiti

Non-sexual transmission modes of human papillomavirus in women: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Human papillomavirus (HPV) represents a substantial global health concern. While the evidence supports the notion of sexual transmission as the predominant cause of the condition, studies have also suggested the possibility of non-sexual transmission. The present study sought to investigate non-sexual modes of HPV transmission. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review of observational studies (cohort, case-control, cross-sectional). METHODS: This systematic review searched Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed for studies published between January 2016 and March 2025, using MeSH-based keywor

Stability of mpox virus on different commonly contacted surfaces.

Mpox is still spreading globally and is mostly reported to be transmitted by skin and mucosal contact. However, transmission through contact with fomites, contaminated objects, or surfaces has been reported in general population. Evaluation of the stability of mpox virus (MPXV) on different surfaces is important to minimize mpox transmission. In the study, the stability of MPXV on different kinds of commonly contacted surfaces was determined. MPXV was observed to have a surface-dependent stability pattern. Viable virus was detected on both glass and stainless steel for up to 5 days, and on pla

Comparison of SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Concern 202012/01 (U.K. Variant) and D614G Variant Transmission by Different Routes in Syrian Hamsters.

Introduction: Many SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOC) have been reported recently that were linked to increased transmission. In our earlier study using VOC 202012/01 (U.K. variant) and D614G variant in the hamster model, we observed higher viral RNA shedding through nasal wash in the case of U.K. variant with lower pathogenicity in lung. In this study, we have studied transmission of these two variants by direct contact, aerosol, and fomite routes in Syrian hamsters and compared the viral load and body weight changes in hamsters exposed by both variants to understand the transmission effici

Mpox in Young Woman with No Epidemiologic Risk Factors, Massachusetts, USA.

We describe a case of mpox characterized by a circularly distributed facial rash but no identified risk factors. Fomite transmission of monkeypox virus from contaminated linen at a massage spa was suspected. Clinicians should consider mpox in patients with consistent clinical syndromes, even in the absence of epidemiologic risk factors.

Detection of Haemophilus ducreyi from environmental and animal samples in Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Children in parts of Africa, the South Pacific, and Southeast Asia frequently develop cutaneous ulcers caused by two bacteria: Haemophilus ducreyi (HD) and Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue (causative agent of yaws). The World Health Organization (WHO) aims to eradicate yaws using mass administration of azithromycin. This also leads to a temporary decrease in ulcers caused by HD followed by a rebound suggesting an ongoing reservoir of infection. The aim of this study was to investigate whether HD could spread through the environment or animals. METHODS: Alongside detection of

Essential Oil Disinfectant Efficacy Against SARS-CoV-2 Microbial Surrogates.

Reports of COVID-19 cases potentially attributed to fomite transmission led to the extensive use of various disinfectants to control viral spread. Alternative disinfectants, such as essential oils, have emerged as a potential antimicrobial. Four essential oil blends were tested on three different surfaces inoculated with a coronavirus surrogate, bacteriophage Phi 6, and a bacterial indicator, Staphylococcus aureus. Log10 concentration reductions were analyzed using GraphPad Prism software. Data collected in this study show that the application of dilute essential oil disinfectants using a spra

UV-C Irradiation Effectiveness on Mpox-Virus-Contaminated Surfaces.

INTRODUCTION: Mpox virus (MpoxV), an emerging zoonotic pathogen, has recently caused global concern due to increasing outbreaks beyond its traditional endemic regions. While transmission primarily occurs via close contact, fomites are also suspected of contributing. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of UV-C irradiation on MpoxV-contaminated surfaces. METHODS: the virucidal activity of UV-C (254 nm) irradiation on MpoxV applied to plastic, glass, and stainless-steel surfaces was assessed. Using a viral stock of 2.49 × 105 TCID50/mL, the samples were exposed to increasing UV-C doses

Proteins associated with environmental survival of the pathogen Neisseria meningitidis.

Previously, we reported the persistence of the bacterial pathogen Neisseria meningitidis on fomites, indicating a potential route for environmental transmission. The current goal was to identify proteins that vary among strains of meningococci that have differing environmental survival. We carried out a proteomic analysis of two strains that differ in their potential for survival outside the host. The Group B epidemic strain NZ98/254 and Group W carriage strain H34 were cultured either at 36 °C, 5% CO2, and 95% relative humidity (RH) corresponding to host conditions in the nasopharynx, or at l

Treatment of molluscum contagiosum and herpes simplex virus cutaneous infections.

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a human viral infection contracted by skin-to-skin inoculation, autoinoculation, and fomite inoculation. There are a variety of treatments for MC, including watchful waiting, curettage, cantharidin, cryotherapy, and topical imiquimod. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections also have been treated with imiquimod. This article discusses the treatment of MC and HSV infections and reviews the literature.

A systematic review of human coronaviruses survival on environmental surfaces.

The current pandemic caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led people to implement preventive measures, including surface disinfection and use of alcohol-based hand gel, in order to avoid viral transmission via fomites. However, the role of surface transmission is still debated. The present systematic review aims to summarize all the evidence on surface survival of coronaviruses infecting humans. The analysis of 18 studies showed the longest coronavirus survival time is 28 days at room temperature (RT) on different surfaces: polymer banknotes, vinyl, steel,
