Biochemical and Hsp70 gene expression changes in Apis mellifera workers following water and food deprivation.

BACKGROUND: Resource scarcity poses a real challenge to living organisms. The present study aimed to understand the implications of water and food lack on some biochemical markers. The study also aimed to investigate the expression of Hsp70 gene under the same stress conditions. The Hsp70 gene maintains cellular proteostasis. It is unique in its high sensitivity and rapid response to various stress factors compared to other Hsps. METHODS: Brood frames of Carniolan hybrid bees were incubated at 30 °C and 70% RH. Emerged bees were placed in plastic cages (30 individuals per cage) and received d

Beta and gamma synchronous oscillations in neural network activity in mice-induced by food deprivation.

Food deprivation is known to trigger hunger sensation and motivation to eat for energy replenishing. However, brain mechanisms associated with hunger and neural circuitries that mediate hunger driven responses remained to be investigated. To understand neural signaling of hunger, local field potentials (LFPs) in the lateral hypothalamus (LHa), nucleus accumbens (NAc), dorsal hippocampus (HP) and olfactory bulb (OB) and their interconnectivities were studied in freely moving adult male Albino mice during 18-20 h food deprivation and fed periods. Raw LFP signals were recorded and analyzed for me

Western-style diet impairs stimulus control by food deprivation state cues: Implications for obesogenic environments.

In western and westernized societies, large portions of the population live in what are considered to be "obesogenic" environments. Among other things, obesogenic environments are characterized by a high prevalence of external cues that are associated with highly palatable, energy-dense foods. One prominent hypothesis suggests that these external cues become such powerful conditioned elicitors of appetitive and eating behavior that they overwhelm the internal, physiological mechanisms that serve to maintain energy balance. The present research investigated a learning mechanism that may underli

Food deprivation during active phase induces skeletal muscle atrophy via IGF-1 reduction in mice.

Skeletal muscle mass is largely influenced by nutritional status and physical activity. Although feeding at specific times of the day (time-restricted feeding, TRF) modulates obesity and other metabolic functions, its effects on skeletal muscles remain unclear. We explored the effects of feeding mice only during the inactive (daytime feeding, DF) or active (nighttime feeding, NF) phases for one week. Daytime feeding did not abolish the nocturnal activity rhythm, although total daily activity was reduced in these mice. Temporal expression of the circadian clock genes, Per2 and Rev-erbα, became

Hypocretin release in normal and narcoleptic dogs after food and sleep deprivation, eating, and movement.

Hypocretins (orexins) are recently discovered hypothalamic neuropeptides that have been implicated in the etiology of narcolepsy. The normal behavioral functions of these peptides are unclear, although a role in feeding has been suggested. We measured hypocretin-1 (Hcrt-1) in the cerebrospinal fluid of dogs during a variety of behaviors. We found that 48 h without food (24 h beyond normal 24-h fasting period) produced no significant change in Hcrt-1 levels nor did feeding after the deprivation. In contrast, 24 h of sleep deprivation produced on average a 70% increase in Hcrt-1 level compared w

The Involvement of GABA in the Modulation of the Rhythm of Electrical Activity in the Small Intestine during Food Deprivation.

In experiments on male Wistar rats, the stages of adaptive changes in the rhythm of periodic electrical activity in the small intestine during food deprivation were identified and the effect of GABA on changes of the rhythm under these conditions was assessed. It was found that on days 1-3 of food deprivation, the migrating myoelectric complex (MMC) in the small intestine is preserved, but the cycle becomes rarer. On days 4-6, MMC disappears, irregular and regular activity with no periods of quiescence is recorded. On days 7-9, predominantly irregular activity of the small intestine with short

Impact of absolute food deprivation on the reproductive system in male goldfish exposed to sex steroids.

There is a link between metabolism and reproduction as metabolic hormones affect hypothalamus-pituitary-testis (HPT) hormonal functions and vice versa. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of negative energy balance on the reproductive system in male goldfish exposed to testosterone (T) and 17β-estradiol (E2). Following 7 days of food deprivation (FD), ANOVA models showed significant FD × sex steroid interactions on sperm quality and circulating sex steroid levels. When FD effects were investigated, 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) level and sperm motility and velocity decrea

Objective method for registration of the sniffing component of the search behavior in rabbits subjected to food deprivation.

A method for registration of the sniffing component of the search behavior in rabbits subjected to food deprivation is suggested. Pulsed activities of the muscles controlling the movements of the wings of the nostrils and the pressure in the nasal cavity are recorded simultaneously. The method allows accurate artifact-free registration of the time and amplitude parameters of the sniffing component of the search behavior. The registration is realized on an MP150 programmed complex, consisting of EMG 100C biopotential amplifiers and Samba 202 intracavitary pressure recorder. The method allows sy

Differential metabolic response to 48 h food deprivation at different periods of pregnancy in the rat.

Since during pregnancy the mother switches from an anabolic to a catabolic condition, the present study was addressed to determine the effect of 48 h food deprivation on days 7, 14 and 20 of pregnancy in the rat as compared to age matched virgin controls. Body weight, free of conceptus, decreased with food deprivation more in pregnant than in virgin rats, with fetal weight (day 20) also diminishing with maternal starvation. The decline of plasma glucose with food deprivation was greatest in 20 day pregnant rats. Insulin was highest in fed 14 day pregnant rats, and declined with food deprivatio

Impact of postovulatory food deprivation on the ova transport, hormonal profiles and metabolic changes in sows.

The effect of food deprivation on ova transport, hormonal profiles and metabolic changes was studied in 20 crossbred multiparous sows during their second oestrus after weaning. To determine the time of ovulation, transrectal ultrasonographic examination was performed. The sows were divided into 2 groups, one control group (C-group), which was fed according to Swedish standards, and one experimental group (E-group). The E-group sows were deprived of food from the first morning meal after ovulation until slaughter. Blood samples were collected every second hour from about 12 h before expected ov

The growth of developing oocytes and hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary functions in goldfish under absolute food deprivation.

Food deprivation (FD) seriously affects puberty onset and oogenesis in female fishes. It has been suggested that meal-responsive peptides interact with hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary (HPO) functions; however, current knowledge regarding the integration of metabolism with reproduction remains inconclusive. In the present study, we investigated the effects of 7 days absolute FD on the reproductive system of adult female goldfish (Carassius auratus). The number of nonvitellogenic oocytes was higher in the food-deprived goldfish than in fed goldfish, whereas the number of vitellogenic oocytes was lo

Hepatic monoacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 is induced by prolonged food deprivation to modulate the hepatic fasting response.

During prolonged fasting, the liver plays a central role in maintaining systemic energy homeostasis by producing glucose and ketones in processes fueled by oxidation of fatty acids liberated from adipose tissue. In mice, this is accompanied by transient hepatic accumulation of glycerolipids. We found that the hepatic expression of monoacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (Mogat1), an enzyme with monoacylglycerol acyltransferase (MGAT) activity that produces diacyl-glycerol from monoacylglycerol, was significantly increased in the liver of fasted mice compared with mice given ad libitum access to foo

Food deprivation and leptin prioritize ingestive and sex behavior without affecting estrous cycles in Syrian hamsters.

Energy consumption is critical for the energetically expensive processes related to reproduction, and thus, mechanisms that increase ingestive behavior are directly linked to reproductive success. Similarly, the mechanisms that inhibit hunger and ingestive behavior might be most adaptive when these mechanisms cause individuals to stop foraging, hoarding and eating in order to find and court potential mates. In the laboratory, ingestive behaviors are typically studied separately from reproductive behaviors even though it is likely that these behaviors evolved under conditions in which both food

Seasonal reproductive endocrine profile of the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides)-effects of melatonin and food deprivation.

The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides, Canidae, Carnivora) is a middle-sized omnivore with excessive autumnal fattening and winter sleep. We studied adaptations of the species to boreal climate and photoperiod by following the plasma reproductive and thyroid hormone concentrations of farm-bred raccoon dogs (n=32) for 12 months. On August 16, 2000, and February 8, 2001, half of the raccoon dogs received continuous-release melatonin implants (the MEL group). The other half was sham-operated (the SHAM group). Between November 27, 2000, and January 25, 2001, half of the animals of both groups

Thiamin deprivation in ventromedial hypothalamic hyperphagic rats: anorexia, specificity of food aversion, and a dietary consideration.

The anorexic consequence of thiamin deprivation was investigated in ventromedial hypothalamic (VMH) hyperphagic rats under either high-fat or low-fat thiamin-free diet conditions. The low-fat diet maintained feeding significantly longer in thiamin-deprived VMH rats than in intact rats, whereas the hig-fat diet sustained feeding in thiamin-deficient intact rats and accelerated anorexia onset in vitamin B1 deprived VMH rats. This effect was noted under both ad lib and pair-feeding conditions. Thiamin-deprived VMH rats subjected to weight control developed anorexia sooner than intact subjects reg
