Food insecurity and other poverty indicators among people living with HIV/AIDS: effects on treatment and health outcomes.

Health disparities in access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) as well as the demands of long-term medication adherence have meant the full benefits of HIV treatment are often not realized. In particular, food insecurity has emerged as a robust predictor of ART non-adherence. However, research is limited in determining whether food insecurity uniquely impedes HIV treatment or if food insecurity is merely a marker for poverty that interferes more broadly with treatment. This study examined indicators of poverty at multiple levels in a sample of 364 men and 157 women living with HIV recruited thro

Renal histological and antioxidant response in Egyptian desert lizards during brumation.

Desert lizards undergo hibernation (brumation) to survive extreme cold and food scarcity. This study investigated brumation-induced renal adaptations in four desert-dwelling species (Uromastyx aegyptia, Varanus griseus, Trapelus savignii, and Tarentola annularis) compared to their active states. Histological examination during brumation revealed kidney degeneration, including glomerulosclerosis, necrotic tubules, and cytoplasmic vacuolization. Morphometric analysis showed species‑specific renal changes during brumation; glomerular diameter significantly decreased in U. aegyptia as well as T. a

The Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Severe Colorectal Complications.

Complications following colorectal surgery remain a persistent issue despite advances in surgical technique, development of enhanced recovery, and improvements in perioperative care. Social determinants of health (SDOHs) at the individual, interpersonal, institutional, community, and policy levels have been associated with the risk of patients experiencing a complication. At the individual level, race and ethnicity are associated with complications, with the Black race having the most robust data demonstrating increased risk for complication. Additional individual-level factors associated with

An outbreak of food poisoning due to a genogroup I norovirus.

Norovirus infection is associated with approximately 90% of epidemic non-bacterial acute gastroenteritis. The objective of this study is to describe an outbreak of norovirus genogroup I gastroenteritis which affected workers in a hospital and was attributed to food prepared by an infected food handler. Forty cases were detected, of whom 80% were interviewed. The index case was the cook employed in the hospital cafeteria. The following symptoms were observed: abdominal pain in 90.6%, vomiting in 71.9%, diarrhoea in 71.9%, general indisposition in 62.5%, headaches in 53.1% and fever in 32.4% of

Solitary male chacma baboons in a desert canyon.

Solitary and paired adult (nine) and subadult (one) male chacma baboons, Papio ursinus, were observed over a period of years living in part of a wooded desert canyon not used by adjacent troops. These extratroop males were silent when alone and gave only one alarm vocalization, the "wa-hoo" call, when paired. The space occupied by them is unsuitable for use by troops according to criteria for adequate sleeping sites and access to water. But the foods available to them, especially figs, but also other fruits and fresh acacia seeds, were abundant. These foods are more highly preferred by baboons

Early impact of a new food store intervention on health-related outcomes.

This study investigated the early impact of a community-based food intervention, the Good Food Junction (GFJ), a full-service grocery store (September 2012 - January 2016) in a former food desert in Saskatoon, Canada. The hypothesis tested was that frequent shopping at the GFJ improved food security and selected health-related outcomes among shoppers, and the impact was moderated by socioeconomic factors. Longitudinal data were collected from 156 GFJ shoppers, on three occasions: 12-, 18-, and 24-months post-opening. Participants were grouped into three categories based on the frequency of sho

Effect of nocturnal feeding on locomotor activity and rumination rhythms, and sleep/wake cycle in diurnal dromedary camels.

The dromedary is a desert animal that is most active during daylight and rests at night. In its natural habitat, it spends most of the day grazing, whereas in an intensive livestock farming system, food availability is programmed by humans. Temporal feeding exerts a strong influence on the circadian rhythms of numerous species. These aspects have become challenging in camel husbandry, which has recently faced important changes, moving from extensive management with free grazing in the desert to urban and peri-urban intensive farms with various feeding schedules. The objective of the present st

A comparison of metal concentrations in vegetables from urban community gardens and groceries in response to community research.

Farmers in urban community gardens (UCGs) grow a variety of vegetables to have access to nutritious food that may be scarce, to enjoy the benefits of nature, and as political resistance to numerous forms of environmental injustice. These injustices are many and include food deserts, contamination, lack of green spaces, and loss of connection to land. To subvert these injustices, many community farmers choose to grow their own produce rather than to purchase produce from grocery stores. As part of an ongoing study on contamination in UCGs, partnering farmers asked our research team to analyze t

Social Determinants of Health in Total Hip Arthroplasty: Are They Associated With Costs, Lengths of Stay, and Patient Reported Outcomes?

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) may play a larger role in predicting patient outcomes as outpatient total hip arthroplasty (THA) expands. We specifically examined the association between SDOH and patient metrics (demographics and comorbidities) for: (1) 30-day post-discharge costs of care; (2) lengths of stay (LOS); and (3) patient-reported outcomes (Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcomes Score for Joints Replacement (HOOS JR)). METHODS: Medicare patients who underwent primary THA between 2018 and 2019 were identified. Those who had complete social determinant data were i

Are gluten-free food staples accessible to all patients with coeliac disease?

INTRODUCTION: Within England the removal of prescribed gluten-free (GF) foods from many Clinical Commissioning Groups has resulted in a greater reliance on commercially available GF food by adults and children with coeliac disease (CD). High cost and limited availability of GF foods are associated with poorer dietary adherence in people with CD. AIM: To assess if the rise in popularity of GF diets globally has improved the cost or availability of cereal-based GF foods over the past 6 years. DESIGN: Observational study where data were collected on cereal-based GF foods from 50 stores and 10 i

Global reports on Glutamicibacter: a mini review.

Glutamicibacter has been recently reclassified from the genus Arthrobacter and represents a rare group of actinobacteria with significant biotechnological potential. Based on 16S rRNA signatures and phylogenomic evidence, its species have been discovered in diverse habitats including soils, sediments, wetlands, permafrost, saline coasts, and deserts. Ecologically, they act as endophytes, rhizosphere partners, and pioneers in extreme environments, reflecting exceptional resilience. These rare actinobacteria exhibit distinct biochemical profiles and follow a rod-coccus life cycle dependent on gr
