Advances in allergic skin disease, anaphylaxis, and hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects.

This review highlights some of the research advances in allergic skin disease, anaphylaxis, and hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects that were reported primarily in the Journal in 2004. Clinical observations included that gastrointestinal symptoms during anaphylaxis are associated with an increased risk for hypotension; recurrence of peanut allergy can occur for about 8% of children who pass an oral food challenge and is associated with continued avoidance of the food after the challenge; seafood allergy is reported by 2.3% of the US population; and determination of the time

Hypersensitivity to Intravenous Lipid Emulsions and Food Allergies: a Systematic Review of Case Reports.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) is essential for patients with prolonged intestinal failure but may contain potential allergens. Unnecessary avoidance of ILE in patients with food allergies could limit nutritional options. Therefore, we systematically reviewed the evidence on ILE use in patients with and without food allergies, including those who experienced hypersensitivity reactions. Searches were conducted in Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and the Canada Vigilance Adverse Reaction Database through April 30, 2025. RECENT FINDINGS: Twenty-eight indiv

[New tools in the diagnosis of food hypersensitivity reactions: beyond IgE and prick testing].

Food hypersensitivity represents a group of adverse immunological reactions linked to food ingestions such as anaphylaxis or eosinophilic esophagitis. Identification of the responsible food is currently based on a detailed history and complementary exams, mostly prick testing and assessment of serum specific IgE, either by ImmunoCAP or multiplex assay. Other skin and laboratory tools such as functional in vitro or patch testing are currently not validated although some show promising results in the field of food allergy. This article presents the different diagnostic procedures that are common

Food-dependent NSAID-induced hypersensitivity (FDNIH) reactions: Unraveling the clinical features and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: In up to 70%-80% of patients with a suspected non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug hypersensitivity (NSAIDH), challenge tests with the culprit drug yield negative results. On the other hand, there could be a NSAIDH overdiagnosis when anaphylaxis is the clinical manifestation. We hypothesize that some negative NSAID challenge tests and an overdiagnosis of NSAIDH occur in patients with food-dependent NSAID-induced hypersensitivity (FDNIH). METHODS: We studied 328 patients with a suspected acute NSAIDH. FDNIH was diagnosed in patients meeting all the following: (1) tolerance to the f

Self-reported prevalence and risk factors associated with food hypersensitivity in Mexican young adults.

BACKGROUND: Food hypersensitivity (FH) is defined as any unfavorable reaction after the ingestion, contact, or inhalation of a food. Few FH prevalence studies have been performed in the Mexican adult population. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of self-reported FH and probable food allergy (FA) among a sample of Mexican young adults and to determine the most commonly involved foods, associated symptoms, and risk factors. METHODS: We designed an observational, cross-sectional study in which 1,253 young adults (aged 18-25 years) born in the State of Mexico answered a questionnaire concer

[Food and food additives hypersensitivity in adult asthmatics. II. Oral allergy syndrome in adult asthmatic with or without Japanese cedar hay fever].

OBJECTS: The aim of this study was to investigate whether oral allergy syndrome (OAS) in Japan has a particular association with Japanese cedar (JC) hay fever and which kinds of food allergen cause OAS. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: The questionnaire was answered by 463 adult asthmatics. Each patient was submitted to skin scratch tests with fresh foods and commercial food extracts. RESULTS: Of the 463 patients 45 (9.7%) were diagnosed as OAS. The foods, which most often provoked a reaction, were in order of frequency, melon, kiwi, crab and shrimp. The prevalence of OAS was higher in patients with JC

[Role of intestinal macrophages in food antigen-induced abdominal pain in mice with visceral hypersensitivity].

Objective: To examine the role of intestinal macrophages and the mechanism by which they produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in abdominal pain induced by food antigens in mice with visceral hypersensitivity. Methods: Mouse models of visceral hypersensitivity were established by subjecting animals to acute cold restraint stress (ACRS) or acetic acid enema (AAE). Visceral sensitivity was evaluated using food antigen ovalbumin (OVA)-induced responses and rectal reflex measurements following ROS scavenging. The activity of intestinal macrophages was assessed using flow cytometry. In vitro enzyme

Reactions of Buckwheat-Hypersensitive Patients during Oral Food Challenge Are Rare, but Often Anaphylactic.

BACKGROUND: Buckwheat (BW) is a common cause of life-threatening allergy in Asia. Few have examined oral food challenges (OFCs) using BW. We here describe the OFC outcomes for the diagnosis or confirmation of tolerance acquisition and clarify risk factors for positive OFCs. METHODS: Between July 2005 and March 2014, we retrospectively reviewed data from children who underwent OFCs using 3,072 mg of BW protein at Sagamihara National Hospital. Children were suspected of having BW allergy because of positive results for BW-specific IgE or because they had been previously diagnosed with BW allerg

The Role of TRAF4 and B3GAT1 Gene Expression in the Food Hypersensitivity and Insect Venom Allergy in Mastocytosis.

Mastocytosis is an uncommon disease classified as a myeloproliferative neoplasm, however, its symptoms are broad and place patients at crossroads between dermatology, hematology and allergology. Patients with mastocytosis often suffer from symptoms resulting from the activation and release of mediators from the mast cells, such as generalized itching, redness, headache, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, bone pain or arthritis, hypotension and shock. The possible severe, fatal or near fatal reactions caused by food hypersensitivity are reasons for the research focused on marker identification. The ai

Advances in allergic skin disease, anaphylaxis, and hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects in 2012.

This review highlights some of the research advances in anaphylaxis; hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects; and allergic skin diseases that were reported in the Journal in 2012. Studies support an increase in peanut allergy prevalence in children and exposure to the antibacterial agent triclosan and having filaggrin (FLG) loss-of-function mutations as risk factors for food sensitization. The role of specific foods in causing eosinophilic esophagitis is elucidated by several studies, and microRNA analysis is identified as a possible noninvasive disease biomarker. Studies on fo

Advances in allergic skin disease, anaphylaxis, and hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects in 2011.

This review highlights some of the research advances in anaphylaxis; hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects; and allergic skin diseases that were reported in the Journal in 2011. Food allergy appears to be increasing in prevalence and carries a strong economic burden. Risk factors can include dietary ones, such as deficiency of vitamin D and timing of complementary foods, and genetic factors, such as filaggrin loss-of-function mutations. Novel mechanisms underlying food allergy include the role of invariant natural killer T cells and influences of dietary components, such as i

Advances in allergic skin disease, anaphylaxis, and hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects in 2009.

This review highlights some of the research advances in anaphylaxis and hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects, as well as advances in allergic skin disease that were reported in the Journal in 2009. Among key epidemiologic observations, several westernized countries report that more than 1% of children have peanut allergy, and there is some evidence that environmental exposure to peanut is a risk factor. The role of regulatory T cells, complement, platelet-activating factor, and effector cells in the development and expression of food allergy were explored in several murine m

Advances in allergic skin disease, anaphylaxis, and hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects in 2014.

This review highlights some of the research advances in anaphylaxis; hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects; and allergic skin diseases that were reported in the Journal in 2014. Studies on food allergy suggest worrisomely high rates of peanut allergy and food-induced anaphylaxis-related hospitalizations. Evidence is mounting to support the theory that environmental exposure to peanut, such as in house dust, especially with an impaired skin barrier attributed to atopic dermatitis (AD) and loss of function mutations in the filaggrin gene, is a risk factor for sensitization and

This review highlights some of the research advances in anaphylaxis; hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects; and allergic skin diseases that were reported in the Journal in 2013. Studies on food allergy suggest that (1) 7.6% of the US population is affected, (2) a "Работает" early diet might prevent food allergy, (3) the skin might be an important route of sensitization, (4) allergen component testing might aid diagnosis, (5) the prognosis of milk allergy might be predictable through early testing, (6) oral or sublingual immunotherapy show promise but also have caveats, and (7)

Advances in allergic skin disease, anaphylaxis, and hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects in 2007.

This review highlights some of the research advances in allergic skin disease, anaphylaxis, and hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insects that were reported primarily in the Journal in 2007. Advances in diagnosis include possible biomarkers for anaphylaxis, improved understanding of the relevance of food-specific serum IgE tests, identification of possibly discriminatory T-cell responses for drug allergy, and an elucidation of irritant responses for vaccine allergy diagnostic skin tests. Mechanistic studies are discerning T-cell and cytokine responses central to eosinophilic gast

[Characteristics of the functional state of the pancreas, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense in food hypersensitivity in children].

Pancreas function, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defence were studied in 154 children aged 1 to 14 years with food allergy. Allergic inflammation due to food allergy favours the origin of different abnormalities of pancreas function: functional (39.4%), reactive pancreatitis (31.3%), chronic pancreatitis (20.1%), and sclerosing chronic pancreatitis (9.2%). They occur in combination with lipid peroxidation activation and a decrease in antioxidant defence. The intensity of the latter ones is dependent on the variety of pancreas function disturbance. The most significant changes in lipid per

Chronic Food Antigen-specific IgG-mediated Hypersensitivity Reaction as A Risk Factor for Adolescent Depressive Disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the most common nonfatal disease burden worldwide. Systemic chronic low-grade inflammation has been reported to be associated with MDD progression by affecting monoaminergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission. However, whether various proinflammatory cytokines are abnormally elevated before the first episode of depression is still largely unclear. Here, we evaluated 184 adolescent patients who were experiencing their first episode of depressive disorder, and the same number of healthy individuals was included as controls. We tested the serum levels of high-s

Enhanced IL-4 but normal interferon-gamma production in children with isolated IgE mediated food hypersensitivity.

Atopic disorders such as atopic dermatitis and asthma have been characterised by an imbalance in interferon-gamma (INF-gamma) and IL-4. Whether similar imbalances are found in atopic disorders with different clinical manifestations, such as IgE mediated immediate food hypersensitivity, is not clear. We have examined the in vitro production of INF-gamma and IL-4 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) following phytohaemagglutinin stimulation from children with isolated immediate IgE mediated food hypersensitivity (egg, milk, "nut"), children with moderate and severe atopic dermatitis, and
