Disability and food access and insecurity: A scoping review of the literature.

A scoping review was conducted, using a social ecological model approach, of 106 articles examining the effect of disability on food access and (in)security. Results of the review show a consistently increased risk of food insecurity among people with disabilities with a higher risk for mental health disabilities, and among disabled younger adults. Mediators of this relationship were underexplored. Disability was mainly conceptualized as a problematic category preventing food access while ignoring disabling social and environmental barriers. A social model of disability can inform future resea

Long COVID and Food Insecurity in US Adults, 2022-2023.

IMPORTANCE: Long COVID (ie, post-COVID-19 condition) is a substantial public health concern, and its association with health-related social needs, such as food insecurity, remains poorly understood. Identifying modifiable risk factors like food insecurity and interventions like food assistance programs is critical for reducing the health burden of long COVID. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of food insecurity with long COVID and to assess the modifying factors of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation and employment status. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS:

This study conducted a scoping review to examine the relationship between food insecurity and childhood obesity, analyzing 47 articles with empirical data published between 2020 and 2023. The studies were categorized by income level of the countries of origin and included cross-sectional surveys, cohorts, and ecological approaches. Most of the research focused on low- and middle-income countries, where food insecurity is more prevalent, but articles from high-income countries were also analyzed. The principal factors evaluated were the household's socioeconomic status, the children's age group

Mid- and long-term associations between food insecurity and sarcopenia.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a complex geriatric syndrome characterized by progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance. Nutritional factors, including food insecurity, have been reported to be important in the development of sarcopenia. However, evidence on the relationship between sarcopenia and food insecurity is limited, especially with longitudinal data. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the longitudinal association between sarcopenia, severe sarcopenia, and food insecurity in a nationally representative sample of older adults in Mexico

Prevalence of Food Insecurity Among HIV-Positive Smokers in Vietnam.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking causes disparate health outcomes among people living with HIV, who also experience higher rates of food insecurity compared to HIV-negative adults. OBJECTIVE: Aiming to characterize household food insecurity among HIV + smokers in Vietnam, we surveyed 182 smokers undergoing HIV-care at 5 clinics in Hanoi, Vietnam. METHODS: We estimated the proportion of food insecurity among our sample using the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale and analyzed covariates associated with food insecurity, like income, and moderators of smoking, like drug use. RESULTS: Food insecurity

Post-disaster food insecurity: Hurricane Maria as a case study.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is traditionally defined as a chronic condition linked to insufficient income, but in post-disaster contexts the condition may differ significantly, often with sudden onset and temporary nature. There is no specific definition for post-disaster food insecurity, making accurate data collection and development of effective interventions difficult. METHODS: To explore this issue, we performed a pilot survey study (n = 22) in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria to evaluate food insecurity status, duration, and causes. RESULTS: Over half of respondents self-reported expe

Health inequalities among people experiencing food insecurity. An intersectional approach.

The study examines the socioeconomic determinants of physical health among populations experiencing food insecurity and receiving free meals in soup kitchens in the Prefecture of Attica, Greece. Data were collected from the same six soup kitchens in 2012, 2017 and 2021, resulting in a dataset of 1533 observations. The study revealed that periods characterised by an economic recession are associated with deteriorated physical health of food-insecure people. Moreover, the study found that physical health deteriorations among food-insecure people are associated with older age, female gender, immi

Housing and Food Insecurity, Health Literacy, and Maladaptive Coping Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Stressors related to social determinants of health (SDH), such as housing and food insecurity, are implicated in chronic disease risk. Maladaptive strategies for coping with these stressors may exacerbate risk. OBJECTIVE: Given the limited research on SDH-related stressors and maladaptive coping, this study examined the relationship between two SDH-related stressors (housing and food insecurity) and maladaptive coping behaviors (i.e., emotional eating and stress-related cigarette and alcohol use) in adults. Further, because health literacy (HL), another SDH, may be a protective fa

Effects of welfare reform on household food insecurity across generations.

This study estimates the effects of welfare reform in the 1990s, which permanently restructured and contracted the cash assistance system in the U.S., on food insecurity-a fundamental form of material hardship-of the next generation of households. An implicit goal underlying welfare reform was the disruption of an assumed intergenerational transmission of disadvantage; however, little is known about the effects of welfare reform on the well-being of the next generation of adults. Using intergenerational data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and a variation on a difference-in-differences

METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of cancer survivors drawn from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2011-2014. Weighted analyses included descriptive, bivariate, and multinomial logistic regression. RESULTS: Of the cancer survivors identified in the sample (n = 1,022), 8.36% were food

Food Insecurity in the Food Allergic Population: A Work Group Report of the AAAAI Adverse Reactions to Foods Committee.

Food allergies affect 32 million Americans. Restricted diets due to food allergies can be difficult to maintain especially when the household is food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as the inability to acquire food for household members due to insufficient money or resources for food. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many people to face food insecurity for the first time with Latinx, Native American, and Black communities disproportionately affected. Because of the increase in food insecurity, this work group developed a survey regarding food insecurity screening. This survey was sent out

Food Insecurity and Suicidal Behaviors Among US High School Students.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity (FI) rates in the United States are particularly high among households with children. This research set aims to analyze if high school students experiencing FI had higher risk for mental health and suicidal behaviors. METHODS: Using combined data from 11 states that conducted the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a total of 26,962 and 24,051 high school students were used to estimate race/ethnicity and sex-stratified prevalence ratios (PRs) from Poisson regression models. A single-question was used to measure the exposure of FI and outcomes of mental health and suic

A Meta-analysis of the Prevalence of Food Insecurity Among People Experiencing Housing Insecurity and Homelessness in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Studies suggest that people experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness (HIH) have varying experiences with food insecurity. We estimated the prevalence of food insecurity and identified the factors associated with it among people experiencing HIH in the United States. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis of the prevalence of food insecurity among people experiencing HIH and a systematic review of associated factors through a comprehensive search of 8 academic databases. We identified 3398 unique articles and included 40 studies in the review that met the following criteria:

Household food insecurity with hunger is associated with women's food intakes, health and household circumstances.

This study investigated food intake patterns and contextual factors related to household food insecurity with hunger among a sample of 153 women in families seeking charitable food assistance in Toronto. Women in households characterized by food insecurity with severe or moderate hunger over the past 30 d (as assessed by the Food Security Module) reported lower intakes of vegetables and fruit, and meat and alternatives than those in households with no hunger evident. Women were more likely to report household food insecurity with hunger over the past 12 mo and 30 d if they also reported longst
