Myths and Facts about Food Intolerance: A Narrative Review.

Most adverse reactions to food are patient self-reported and not based on validated tests but nevertheless lead to dietary restrictions, with patients believing that these restrictions will improve their symptoms and quality of life. We aimed to clarify the myths and reality of common food intolerances, giving clinicians a guide on diagnosing and treating these cases. We performed a narrative review of the latest evidence on the widespread food intolerances reported by our patients, giving indications on the clinical presentations, possible tests, and dietary suggestions, and underlining the m

Food malabsorption/intolerance complaints triggered by primary epiploic appendagitis.

Primary epiploic appendagitis (PEA) is an uncommon and self-limiting cause of acute or subacute abdominal complaints. The diagnosis of PEA, with its characteristic appearance, is made with computed tomography (CT). This report describes a patient seven months after a CT-confirmed diagnosis of PEA. Because of persistent and recurring, functional, non-specific abdominal complaints, food intolerance/malabsorption was investigated. Fructose malabsorption combined with histamine intolerance was found. A registered dietician helped develop an individually-tailored diet to address the problem. Within

Food intolerance in patients with manifest autoimmunity. Observational study.

In the professional medical and scientific world, there is not many interest in the correlation of food intolerance and autoimmune diseases. However there is a lot of evidence that e.g. gluten or gliadine can induce autoimmmune diseases: example the interest in coeliac disease and autoimmunity. There is however a lot of informationavailable about leaky gut and autoimmunity. We performed an observational study in our data base;, where we selected 100 patients with manifest autoimmune disease with clear symptoms and autoimmune antibodies in the form of positive anf more tehn 160 titer. These pat

Debates in allergy medicine: food intolerance does not exist.

BACKGROUND: The term "intolerance" is not mentioned in the World Allergy Organization (WAO) document on allergy nomenclature. "Intolerance" has been used to describe some non-immunological diseases. However, pediatric gastroenterologists mix allergy and intolerance, e.g. by using the term "cow's milk protein allergy/intolerance (CMPA/I)", lumping together all types of mechanisms for not tolerating cow's milk. The basis for this mix is the fact that double-blind oral food challenges are time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, cow's milk exclusion and reintroduction is proposed to be used in pr

Food Allergies and Intolerances: A Clinical Approach to the Diagnosis and Management of Adverse Reactions to Food.

Food allergy is an aberrant immunological response to food antigen, which can result in potentially life-threatening reactions. It is often challenging to differentiate food allergy from other adverse reactions to food because their presentations can be indistinguishable. The purpose of this article is to give an overview of the classification, evaluation, and management of adverse food reactions, key differentiating features of food allergy, roles and limitations of various food allergy testing, and promising areas of emerging research. Case studies are used to highlight some of the clinical

Adverse reactions to food constituents: allergy, intolerance, and autoimmunity.

Food allergies and intolerance represent important health concerns to consumers who are predisposed to these illnesses. Unlike many current food safety issues, food sensitivities are complicated by both complex and multiple individual adverse reactions, which can vary from emotional to pathophysiological ailments. In some instances, the underlying mechanisms that result in the development of food allergies or intolerance have marked differences but produce common symptoms. The present-day diagnosis of these disorders can be impeded by intrinsic limitations in generating accurate information fr

[Food allergy? Intolerance? – Examination of adverse reactions to foods in 406 adult patients].

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of adverse food reactions is increasing, with 10-20% of the adult population experiencing such complaints. Most symptoms are thought to be indicators of food allergy, although non-immune-mediated food intolerance and other (e.g., gastroenterological) disorders are more likely to cause them. AIM: Our aim was to gain a better understanding of the adult patient group that has adverse food reactions and to discover the real background of the symptoms that are believed to be caused by food allergy. In addition, in the context of interdisciplinarity, we would like to em

[Determination of lactose intolerance frequency in children with food allergy].

UNLABELLED: Lactose malabsorption and lactose intolerance symptoms are the most common alimentary tract disorders in children. Lactose intolerance is a result of lactase deficiency or lack of lactase and lactose malabsorption. Hypersensitivity in food allergy is connected with the presence of specific IgE (specific antibodies against some allergens) or lymphocytes. Lactose intolerance and food allergy may coexist in the same patient. AIM: The aim of this study was determination of lactose intolerance frequency in children with food allergy who were below and above 5 years of age. MATERIAL AN

Diagnosis and management of food allergy and intolerance in dogs and cats.

This paper reviews food allergy and intolerance in dogs and cats. Adverse reactions to ingested food components can affect many systems and can produce signs involving the skin, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract and central nervous system, and these clinical signs are reviewed. Most basic food ingredients have the potential to induce an allergic response, although most reactions are caused by proteins. In particular, dogs and cats can become sensitive to cow's milk, beef, fish or cereal. Food allergy and intolerance is rare in dogs and cats, although the incidence in practice is diffic

Detection of urticaria with food additives intolerance by means of diet.

A diet free of salicylates, benzoates and azo dyes was applied to 158 patients with chronic urticaria. On the basis of the results of this diet, 50 persons were recognized as 'sensitive' to food additives. Psychosomatic examination of the latter patients demonstrated that they do not differ significantly from the remaining ones as regards exacerbations of skin changes by psychological stress. On the other hand, the coexistence of a frustrating situation at the beginning of appearance of skin changes is markedly less frequent in persons 'sensitive' to food additives. Patients are described in w

Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) and nonallergic food intolerance: FODMAPs or food chemicals?

Food intolerance in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is increasingly being recognized, with patients convinced that diet plays a role in symptom induction. Evidence is building to implicate fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) in the onset of abdominal pain, bloating, wind and altered bowel habit through their fermentation and osmotic effects. Hypersensitivity to normal levels of luminal distension is known to occur in patients with IBS, with consideration of food chemical intolerance likely to answer many questions about this physiological process.

The role of food intolerance in functional gastrointestinal disorders in children.

BACKGROUND: Functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID) is a common, benign, chronic diagnosis that has a significant negative impact on quality of life. FGIDs that develop in childhood can persist into adulthood. Currently, there is no cure and few treatment options are available. OBJECTIVE: This article provides an outline of current research supporting the role of food intolerance in children with FGIDs. DISCUSSION: Food intolerances have long been reported by patients with FGIDs; however, randomised controlled trials are lacking in this area. Food intolerances that have been investigated

[Relevance of food allergies and intolerance reactions as causes of urticaria].

Adverse reactions to food can be identified as underlying causes in various urticarial diseases. Genuine IgE-dependent allergic reactions to food are known to play a role in acute urticaria (especially in young children), in some cases of exercise-induced urticaria, and in contact urticaria. Intolerance reactions to certain foods (pseudoallergens) are recognized causes of chronic urticaria. A thorough and detailed history, keeping a urticaria diary, quantification of specific serum IgE, and skin tests as well as elimination and provocation tests can help to identify food allergy or intolerance
