While the health of all depends on the food chain, few studies have focused systematically on the health of food chain workers themselves (production, manufacturing, wholesale, retail, and commercial and institutional services). In this study we used 2018 and 2019 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to examine health-related metrics of food chain workers, combined and by industry sector, compared to non-food chain workers, among 32 U.S. states. Logistic regression indicated U.S. food chain workers had higher prevalences of barriers to health care access, smoking, n

This study investigated food intake patterns and contextual factors related to household food insecurity with hunger among a sample of 153 women in families seeking charitable food assistance in Toronto. Women in households characterized by food insecurity with severe or moderate hunger over the past 30 d (as assessed by the Food Security Module) reported lower intakes of vegetables and fruit, and meat and alternatives than those in households with no hunger evident. Women were more likely to report household food insecurity with hunger over the past 12 mo and 30 d if they also reported longst

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to food advertising is associated with consumption. Globally, most outdoor food advertisements feature unhealthy foods or beverages. As Australian local government areas (LGAs) begin developing restriction policies, the feasibility of applying nutrient-based nutrition classification systems to outdoor advertising requires evaluation.
DESIGN: Observational study on (1) types of food business advertisements outdoors and (2) availability of quantitative nutrition and/or ingredient information for featured products. 178 outdoor advertisements were analysed, from a 500m audit a

INTRODUCTION: South African youth and adolescents face a high burden of (Sexually Transmitted Infections) STIs, HIV and unintended pregnancies, but uptake of services remains low. To address this, tailored and scalable interventions are urgently needed. We developed a framework to fill the gap and translate the impact of facility-level attributes into a cost-effectiveness analysis for increasing HIV/contraceptive service uptake in adolescents using a discrete choice experiment (DCE).
METHODS: We used a DCE (n = 805) conducted in Gauteng, South Africa, which found that staff attitude, confiden

OBJECTIVES: To assess the relationship between eating food purchased away from home (FAH) and longitudinal change in body mass index (BMI) z-score among girls, and to assess the longitudinal tracking of eating FAH from childhood through adolescence.
DESIGN: Participants kept 7-day dietary records at two points in time. The records included the place and time for all foods consumed. We recorded how often participants ate FAH, calculated the percent of total energy derived from FAH, and classified foods as quick-service food, coffee-shop food, or restaurant food.

Financial barriers and limited cooking facilities are major obstacles to healthy dietary practices among the homeless population. Homelessness is currently at crisis point and up-to-date evidence from multiple stakeholders is needed to address dietary inequalities. The aim of this study was to understand dietary practices, barriers to healthy eating within homeless services from multiple perspectives. Twelve service users and five healthcare and social service providers participated in semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed thematically. Four themes were identified which included: lack

BACKGROUND: The increase in food insecurity (FI) during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in greater demand for food- and nutrition-related services. Yet, little is known about the experiences of local food- and nutrition-related agencies and how they responded to address the increased need.
PURPOSE: We aimed to elucidate the perspectives and experiences of key informants from diverse food- and nutrition-related stakeholder agencies in addressing FI in San Diego County, CA during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: The Socioecological Model and a capacity-oriented approach informed this qualitative

Australia is experiencing a current juxtaposition between large amounts of food waste and increasing food insecurity. Surplus food produced by Australian hospitals is currently sent to landfill but could be temporarily repurposed to support food-insecure individuals and families until large-scale food system reform is achieved. We comment on potential uses for this surplus 'food waste', including four strategies: medically tailored meals, food provision at discharge, donation and internal hospital system reuse. These strategies could simultaneously reduce hospital food waste while providing fo

BACKGROUND: To improve the healthfulness of foods offered while accelerating the use of environmental sustainability practices, it is important to engage hospital food service operators in the adoption of such practices. The purpose of this study was to explore barriers, facilitators and best practices for implementing environmental sustainability standards in food service among veterans affairs (VA) hospitals in the United States.
METHODS: We conducted an online survey with 14 VA hospital food service directors and then 11 qualitative interviews. The survey assessed motivations for initiatin

Leveraging patient preferences can improve patient satisfaction and engagement in intentional health services. We explored desired health services preferences of marginalized populations accessing HIV-related care engagement to inform the implementation of an HIV prevention and treatment mobile clinic model. We conducted a maximum-difference survey with 154 people at community events and homeless encampments in Oakland, CA. Participants ranked 32 items in differentials of importance on a tablet, which were analyzed with Hierarchical Bayesian modeling. Fourteen services were prioritized, includ

The effects of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the lives of underserved populations are underexplored. This study aimed to identify the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated public health responses on the health and social well-being, and food security of users of Housing First (HF) services in Toronto (Canada) during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative descriptive study was conducted from July to October 2020 in a subsample of 20 adults with a history of homelessness and serious mental disorders who were receiving HF services in Toronto. Psychosocial concerns, such as anxiety and decreased quality of life, are common among patients with food allergy and their caregivers. There is evidence that childhood anxiety disorders are at the outset of a "cascade of psychopathology," highlighting the importance of early recognition and treatment. Provision of psychological services is needed, beginning with a thorough assessment of food allergy-related quality of life, subjective perceptions of food allergy severity, and environmental factors. Implementation of patient-centered cognitive-behavioral, medical coping, and motivational inter

The objective of this study was to analyze the ideas about quality of AE, established through the legal documents of the National School Feeding Program (PNAE) in the period from 1955 to 2020, based on the constitutive dimensions of the FNS concept formalized in national legislation. Based on the method of document analysis and the theoretical references of discursive institutionalism, ideas about quality were problematized in light of the concept of food and nutritional security (SAN, acronym in Portuguese). 16 PNAE legislations were analyzed considering the historical, political and social c

Food assistance recipients have high smoking rates. Mental health factors that may affect their smoking are understudied. This study examined psychological distress and mental health service use among food assistance recipients enrolled in a smoking cessation trial. The trial sample comprised N = 352 adults aged ≥18, earning below 200% of the federal poverty level, smoking ≥5 cigarettes daily, and receiving public food assistance (e.g. SNAP). Psychological distress was assessed via the Kessler-6. Recent mental health service use (yes/no), therapeutic satisfaction (scale of 1-10), and potential

Insects are fundamental to ecosystem functioning and human welfare, yet their multifaceted contributions to ecological services, food security, rural livelihoods, and cultural heritage remain insufficiently represented in mainstream scientific research and policy. Despite growing global recognition of insect decline and the potential of entomophagy to address food system challenges, integrated evidence linking global ecological knowledge with community-level indigenous practices is lacking, particularly in sub-Saharan African contexts. A narrative bibliometric review was conducted through syst
