Over the years patients with relatively minor compressive injuries seem to have a different morbidity, largely because of a constellation of neurologic findings, including dysesthesia and hyperesthesias. These are usually multifocal, and often extend far beyond the point of impact of the crushing force. Neuroischemia may play a role in the development of chronic pain after crush injuries to the foot, either through direct trauma to the peripheral nerves or by intraneural or extraneural fibrosis. This direct trauma to the nerve may cause chronic neuritis, which then triggers a sympathetically m

Presented are the results of primary surgical treatment of war injuries of the foot in 250 patients wounded in the territory of former Yugoslavia in the period June 1991-October 1995. Total number of feet treated was 275. Aetiologically, the most frequent injuries were those inflicted by the effect of mine blasts (65.2%) and by bullets from firearms (30.8%). Injuries to a single foot were present in 140 (56.0%), combined injuries in 107 (42.8%) and associated with burn injuries in three (1.2%) patients. Soft tissue injuries were present in 25 (9.1%) and injuries to bone structures and joints i

Sixty-four children with tendon injuries about the foot and ankle have been reviewed in order to present a plan of management when such injuries occur. One-third involved the tendo Achillis; the others were equally distributed between the dorsum and sole of the foot, and in only 12% was more than one tendon involved. Sensory nerves were frequently severed, but nearly all recovered completely after early repair. The results of immediate repair of tendons were good. When repair was delayed the results were less satisfactory, as severe deformities developed in the growing feet. Early exploration

Dancers are performing artists and elite athletes with unique physiological and psychological demands. Many dance styles, especially classical ballet, require extraordinary flexibility and strength throughout the foot and ankle with remarkable pain tolerance. Injuries arising from biomechanical and metabolic stresses negatively impact career progression with resultant chronic pain, permanently impaired function, and financial loss. Therefore, dancers rarely seek medical attention except for genuine problems. The unique demands of dance can result in specific injuries and distinctive radiologic

Winter sports injuries of the foot and ankle are a relevant entity due to the high enthusiasm for alpine skiing and snowboarding. The condition of the footwear and rigidity of the binding have a significant influence on the pathobiomechanics of fracture development and have been shown to influence the frequency of knee and ankle injuries. Foot injuries are rare due to the sport-specific footwear with good padding and frequent hard shell casings.

Gunshot-related injuries remain a significant and important cause of global morbidity and cost. The foot and ankle has certain anatomic and functional considerations that make gunshot-related injuries challenging to manage. While the scientific literature regarding gunshot-related injuries is extensive, little of the existing literature focuses on the foot and ankle. While principles of management can be somewhat extrapolated from the current literature, an understanding of the body of work specific to the foot and ankle is valuable. Therefore, this review provides an overview of ballistic inj

BACKGROUND: Forklift-related crush injuries of the foot and ankle are relatively common in cities with shipping and construction industries. There is a paucity of literature on the incidence and sequelae of such injuries. We aimed to describe the incidence, patterns of injuries, sequelae, and morbidity associated with this type of injury.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients with forklift-related crush injuries of the foot and ankle for 4 years was conducted. Patients' demographics, mechanisms and patterns of injury, fracture type, compartment syndrome, number of reconstructive ope

BACKGROUND: Reports in the media suggest that escalator-related foot injuries are on the rise. Trendy, bright-colored rubber clogs have been implicated in a significant number of these incidents involving children. We review the children who sustained severe foot injuries on escalators, were wearing rubber clogs at the time of injury, and who were admitted to hospital for emergency surgery.
METHODS: A list of children who sustained foot injuries on escalators was generated from the hospital database and included for study. From clinical chart review, demographic data, footwear type, and injur

Foot and ankle injuries are among the most common in athletes.Differential diagnosis, imaging decisions, and treatment plan should be influenced by the age of the athlete. A thorough history and physical examination, with an understanding of the anatomy of the foot and ankle anatomy and the mechanism of injury, will give the best opportunity to make the correct diagnosis. For most athletes, the prognosis for returning to play after a foot or ankle injury is very good. The recipe for keeping our athletes healthy includes early intervention, undergoing proper rehabilitation, applying braces or o

Injuries to the ankle, foot, and toes of injured workers are common. Although the workers' compensation system attempts to collect information about these injuries and report them in a meaningful way, the process is somewhat inconsistent, inaccurate, and provides information relevant to government agencies but not to physician organizations seeking to improve the prevention and treatment of work-related injuries. Several improvements in data collection could greatly increase the system's efficiency and usefulness. The first is to establish a national system of uniform data collection from each

Stingrays are cartilaginous fish that are related to sharks. They are one of the largest groups of venomous marine animals. Stingrays account for 750 to 2000 injuries annually. They are generally passive, reclusive creatures that only sting in self-defense. Most injuries caused by these animals are nonfatal. A stingray possesses between 1 and 4 venomous stings, which are located along the caudal spine. If a stingray injury is sustained, parts of the spine may be left in the lacerations, which prolongs exposure to venom and increases the risk of subsequent wound infection. Stingray venom is uni

Foot and ankle sports injuries encompass a wide spectrum of conditions from simple contusions or sprains that resolve within days to more severe injuries that change the trajectory of an athlete's sporting career. If missed, severe injuries could lead to prolonged absence from the sport and therefore a catastrophic impact on future performance. In this article, we discuss the presentation of the commonest foot and ankle sports injuries and share recent evidence to support an accurate diagnosis and best management practice.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical effects of repairing ankle and foot injuries with perforator-based propeller flaps.
METHODS: From June 2012 to April 2014, 20 patients with soft tissue defects on the foot and ankle were treated by perforator-based propeller flaps, including 14 males and 6 females with an average age of (36.2±4.6) years old ranging from 8 to 64 years. Area of soft tissue defect varied from 5 cm×2 cm to 22 cm×7 cm. The time from injury to operation ranged from 8 to 90 days, with an average of(38.2±6.2) days. AOFAS scoring were applied to evaluate therapeutic effects.
RESULTS: A

This article discusses the common complications associated with lower extremity trauma and amputations secondary to combat injuries. The complications include retained fragments, soft tissue adhesions, poor wound healing, painful bursae, neuroma formation, heterotopic ossification, and depleted uranium. Although there is some literature on these topics, most is based on noncombat injuries, indicating a need for further research into the management of these devastating injuries.

BACKGROUND: Major, rare and complex incidents can occur at any mass-gathering sporting event and team medical staff should be appropriately prepared for these. One such event, the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, presented a significant sporting and medical challenge. This study concerns an epidemiological analysis of foot and ankle injuries during the Games.
METHODS: An observational, epidemiological survey was used to analyse injuries in all sport tournaments (men's and women's) over the period of the Games.
RESULTS: A total of 624 injuries (525 soft tissue injuries and 99 bony injuries) were

In assessing the foot types and lower limb injuries of elite netball players, the following summary seems warranted. Ninety percent of elite female netball players had symmetrical foot types for both feet and these players had experienced at least one lower limb injury. Only 7.6% players (N = 16) of the 204 players surveyed had never sustained a lower limb injury during their netball careers. Regardless of foot type, the injury history of these elite netball players presented with a total number of 449 injuries that occurred to both ankle joints (36%), one ankle joint (16%), both knee joints (

Seventy consecutive patients treated for lawn mower injuries to the foot and ankle were reviewed to determine optimal treatment, functional results, and complications. Injuries were classified into 1 or more functional-anatomical zones (I, digits; II, dorsum; III, plantar nonweight-bearing surface; IV, heel; and V, ankle) for a total of 96 injuries. Thirty-one patients were available for follow-up. Mean age was 36.7 years and 84% were males. Most injuries (67%) involved patients > 16 years old using a push mower; however, 18% involved children < 5 years old, usually caused by riding mowers (70
