OBJECTIVES: The etiology of flatfoot and cavus foot is multicausal and controversial. So far, no literature reports the relationship between the sagittal morphology of subtalar joint and the alignment of foot. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the subtalar alignment would influence the configuration of foot.
METHODS: From January 2017 to January 2020, we included 109 feet in the flatfoot group, 95 feet in the cavus group, and 104 feet in the control group in this retrospective comparative study. The Gissane angle and calcaneal posterior articular surface inclination angle repre

BACKGROUND: The foot and ankle are uncommon sites of bone and joint infections (BJIs) in children. The objectives of the present study were to determine the clinical and bacteriologic features of BJIs and to assess any associated complications and orthopedic sequelae.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective, single-center study of children treated for foot or ankle BJIs between 2008 and 2018 in a French university medical center. A total of 23 children were included. The median age at diagnosis was 9.1 years. Osteomyelitis was noted in 14 cases; it involved the calcaneus in seven cases, the dis

AIMS: Evaluation of how ankle joint mobility (AJM) can be useful in the identification of patients with diabetes at risk of foot ulcer (FU).
METHODS: Plantar and dorsal flexion of foot were evaluated using an inclinometer in 87 patients (54 type 2 and 33 type 1), and 35 healthy sex- and age-matched control subjects. Patients with diabetes were followed up for diagnosis of FU over the next 8 years and subsequently, patients were subdivided into: those without a history of FU (18 type 1 and 33 type 2), those who had a history of FU detected before baseline evaluation (14 type 2) and those who h

This study explored three dimensional (3D) talonavicular joint (TNJ) coverage/orientation and bone morphology to reveal parameters that could classify and identify predispositions to cavus and planus feet. 3D models of 65 feet from 40 subjects were generated from computed tomography images classified as pes cavus, neutrally aligned, or asymptomatic/symptomatic pes planus. We calculated the talar and navicular overlap (TNJ coverage). We also measured orientation of the navicular, morphological parameters of the talus and navicular, and angular position of the talar head to body. Pes cavus showe

Clinicians have traditionally assessed range of motion of the first metatarsophalangeal and ankle joints in a static position. It is unclear, however, if these measurements accurately reflect functional sagittal plane limitations of these joints during gait. For 50 patients (100 feet), we assessed available dorsiflexion at the first metatarsophalangeal and ankle joints, as well as the presence of pinch callus. We then compared these findings with 11 functional gait parameters, as measured using a pressure sensor system. After adjusting for age, weight, smoking status, glycosylated hemoglobin,

The paper deals with the visualizing study of the ankle joint and foot by MRI and with the problems in the interpretation of magnetic resonance images in health. For this, 50 healthy volunteers without diseases and lesions of the ankle joint and foot were examined. The study was performed by using flexible superficial coils and T1-, T2-, and proton-weighed pulse-sequences in the orthogonal projections. The articular surfaces and cavity of the ankle joint were evaluated. The specific features of visualization of the muscles and tendons of this area and the pattern of fluid under their membranes

This study was undertaken to evaluate the occurrence of Charcot joint changes in diabetic patients after fractures and/or dislocations of the foot and ankle. There were 20 fracture/dislocations of the foot and ankle in 18 patients, with an average follow-up of 27 months (range 14-70 months). There were eight fractures of the midfoot, six fractures of the ankle, four fractures of the hindfoot, and two fractures of the forefoot. Eight fractures were followed by the development of Charcot changes: five in the midfoot and one each in the forefoot, hindfoot, and ankle. Of nine fractures recognized

The article analyzes results of the treatment of 48 patients aged from 6 to 52 with neurogenic and posttraumatic contractures and equinous deformity of feet treated by a hinge-distraction method with an individual arrangement of elements of the Ilizarov apparatus and hinges designed in the clinic. It has been established that the possibility to arrange hinges at any required level allows to eliminate either consequently or simultaneously all the kinds of joint deformities. Good and satisfactory results were obtained in all the cases.

Crush injuries and abnormal pronation and supination are the most common reasons for typical ligament tears in this region. Most of them should be treated conservatively by plaster of Paris and early weight-bearing after exact clinical and X-ray diagnosis. At upper ankle joint, suture of ruptured fibular collateral ligaments should be favoured. For dislocations and fracture dislocations of the Lisfranc type operative reposition and K-wiring is recommended. Our treatment results with fibular collateral ruptures and fracture dislocations of the Lisfranc type are presented.

Infection imaging has been an important part of nuclear medicine practice. Infections in prosthetic joints and diabetic foot are associated with devastating complications, posing substantial challenge for both diagnosis and overall management. For many years, conventional nuclear medicine techniques have been used to frame a painful joint arthroplasty or diabetic foot infection. The various functional nuclear imaging modalities used include labeled leukocyte imaging, combined leukocyte-marrow scintigraphy, antigranulocyte antibody scintigraphy, 3-phase bone scintigraphy, and fluorodeoxyglucose

This study estimated the contribution of the midfoot joint complex (MJC) kinematics to the pelvis anterior-posterior positions during the stance phase of walking and investigated whether the MJC is functionally coordinated with the lower limb joints to maintain similar pelvic positions across steps. Hip, knee, ankle, and MJC sagittal angles were measured in 11 nondisabled participants during walking. The joints' contributions to pelvic positions were computed through equations derived from a link-segment model. Functional coordination across steps was identified when the MJC contribution to pe

BACKGROUND: Normal dorsiflexion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint during dynamic activities is critical for effective propulsion. Therapeutic foot orthotics may address the pathomechanical loading and joint kinematics issues faced by this population. This study aims to evaluate the effect of two different types of Custom-made foot orthosis compared to shod condition on the stiffness of the rearfoot, midfoot, and 1st metatarsophalangeal joint during walking in patients with Structural Hallux Limitus.
METHODS: This quasi-experimental study used a repeated-measures design with a single coho

99mTc-MDP-single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT has established itself as a useful modality in the assessment of the painful foot and ankle, owing to its ability to depict anatomical and functional information simultaneously. Despite its growing popularity, much of the literature describing the utility of 99mTc-MDP-SPECT/CT of the foot and ankle is limited to osseous and articular pathology, with descriptions of ligamentous pathology limited to just a handful of cases. Though assessment of soft tissues using a combination of bone tracer and CT is limited, with a sound understan

BACKGROUND: The outcome of a constant joint preserving procedure for painful plantar callosities with cavovarus foot remains unclear.
METHODS: Eleven patients (11 feet) who underwent lateral displacement calcaneal osteotomy (LDCO), dorsiflexion first metatarsal osteotomy (DFMO), and plantar fasciotomy (PF), simultaneously were included. The presence of painful callosities, heel alignment of standing (HA), and the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot ankle/hindfoot (JSSF) score were evaluated. Radiographically, the talonavicular coverage angle (TNCA), lateral talo-first metatarsal angle (L

Human foot rigidity is thought to provide a more effective lever with which to push against the ground. Tension of the plantar aponeurosis (PA) with increased metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint dorsiflexion (i.e., the windlass mechanism) has been credited with providing some of this rigidity. However, there is growing debate on whether MTP joint dorsiflexion indeed increases arch rigidity. Further, the arch can be made more rigid independent of additional MTP joint dorsiflexion (e.g., when walking with added mass). The purpose of the present study was therefore to compare the influence of increas

BACKGROUND: Adult acquired flatfoot deformity is characterized by a progressive functional deficit of the foot that leads to an eversion of the subtalar joint complex with heel valgus, abduction of the forefoot and collapse of the medial arch. In the case of a flexible deformity, a joint-preserving operative reconstruction is advisable, which should correct all elements of the deformity. A calcaneal lengthening osteotomy can correct excessive abduction of the forefoot, which can be measured by the amount of talar head uncoverage visible on AP weight-bearing x‑rays of the foot.
